The Ogre's Bride is a Japanese romantic fantasy light novel series written by Kureha and illustrated by Yu Shiroya, serialized online in 2019 before publication by Starts Publishing under its Starts Shuppan Bunko imprint in October 2020.[1][2][3] Set in an alternate modern Japan where supernatural creatures called ayakashi coexist with humans, the story follows Yuzu Shinonome, a neglected high school girl who becomes the destined bride of Reiya Kiryuin, the next head of the supreme ogre clan.[4][5] The franchise encompasses a manga adaptation, stage reading play, live-action film, and anime television series.[6][7][8]

Setting and World Concept

The series is set in modern Japan following a devastating world war.[5] During this post-war crisis, beings known as ayakashi emerged to support human society using their supernatural abilities.[5] In modern times, ayakashi possess exceptional beauty, longevity, and supernatural powers, leading them to hold superior status, wealth, and influence across politics, business, finance, and culture.[5][9]

Occasionally, an ayakashi selects a human woman to become their destined bride (hanayome).[5] Ayakashi identify their destined bride instantaneously through instinct, which triggers physiological reactions such as rapid heartbeat, body temperature fluctuations, and scent perception.[5] A destined bride brings fortune to the ayakashi's household and boosts the spirit's innate powers.[9][10] Ayakashi devote unwavering protection and lifelong affection to their chosen brides, and offspring born from these unions inherit superior spiritual abilities.[10] Due to the prestige and lavish care granted to brides, becoming an ayakashi's bride is widely regarded among human women as the highest honor, although instances of coerced or arranged pairings also exist.[5]

Whether an ayakashi meets a destined partner depends on luck, and those who never do tend to choose an ayakashi of matching spiritual power as a partner. By contrast, female ayakashi are stricter in choosing partners, and human men are rarely chosen as partners by ayakashi.

Synopsis

Yuzu Shinonome is a high school student whose family openly favors her younger sister Karin.[5] Karin is the bride of Yota Kogetsu, a high-ranking and wealthy fox spirit. She was chosen as his bride in childhood, and the engagement brought her family large financial support. While Karin is spoiled and pampered, Yuzu is neglected and mistreated by their parents, finding solace only with her paternal grandparents.[5] Yuzu's boyfriend Yamato also breaks up with her because he has fallen in love with Karin.

Karin then demands a dress that Yuzu received as a birthday gift from her grandparents. When Yuzu refuses, an argument erupts and the dress is torn. Enraged, Yuzu strikes Karin. Angered that Karin has been hurt, Yota pours flames on Yuzu and burns her arm. Her parents show her no sympathy despite her severe burns. In despair, Yuzu runs away from home. While weeping on a bridge, she encounters Reiya Kiryuin, the next leader of the Kiryuin clan and the foremost ayakashi in Japan.[4][5] Reiya immediately recognizes Yuzu as his destined bride, heals her burn wounds, and takes her into his estate.[5]

Supported by Reiya, Yuzu breaks free from her abusive family and is legally adopted by her loving grandparents. As she adapts to her new life, Yuzu becomes aware of hidden power struggles among the ayakashi and gradually awakens powers that come from her ancestor Saku, the first human bride of an ayakashi.

Characters

The characters span both human society and the supernatural hierarchy of Japanese ayakashi, including high-ranking ogres, fox spirits, cat demons, and ancient spiritual bloodlines.[5][11]

Main Couple

Yuzu Shinonome (東雲 柚子, Shinonome Yuzu) is voiced by Hina Suguta and Manaka Iwami in the reading play, and by Saori Hayami in the anime adaptation.[12][13][14][15] She is portrayed by Ai Yoshikawa in the live-action film, with Ririsa Miyazaki playing her as a child.[16] Yuzu is introduced as a seventeen-year-old high school student born on November 6, though the live-action film portrays her as a university student.[5] Having endured emotional neglect from her parents and bullying from her sister, she developed a habit of enduring hardships in silence.[4][5] She maintains warm relationships with her school peers, teachers, and grandparents.[4][5] Yuzu is later revealed to be the reincarnation and direct descendant of Saku, the maiden protected by a dragon and the original human bride.[17] After entering university, Yuzu awakens spiritual powers, obtains a secretarial license, and marries Reiya upon graduation.

Reiya Kiryuin (鬼龍院 玲夜, Kiryuin Reiya) is voiced by Masaaki Mizunaka and Toshiki Masuda in the reading play, and by Yuichiro Umehara in the anime adaptation.[12][13][14][15] He is portrayed by Ren Nagase in the live-action film, with Towa Watanabe portraying his childhood.[16] Born on June 4, Reiya is an ogre ayakashi and the heir to the Kiryuin clan, the preeminent demon bloodline.[4][5] He has jet-black hair, crimson eyes, an imposing demeanor, and the ability to manipulate blue flames.[4][5] Though cold and unyielding toward outsiders, he displays deep devotion exclusively to Yuzu.[4][11] Sakurako Oniyama is Reiya's former fiancée.[5] Their engagement had been arranged by his family, and Reiya ends it after recognizing Yuzu as his destined bride. He is also the reincarnation of Saku's husband. In the eighth light novel volume, Reiya loses his ayakashi instinct toward his bride after he is stabbed with a divine artifact, though he tells Yuzu that his feelings for her have not changed.[18]

Shinonome Family

Karin Shinonome (東雲 花梨, Shinonome Karin) is voiced by Akari Kageyama and Sayaka Senbongi in the reading play, and by Manaka Iwami in the anime adaptation.[12][13][19] She is portrayed by Rin Kataoka in the live-action film.[20] Born on January 21, Karin is Yuzu's younger sister and Yota Kogetsu's bride.[5][11][21] Lavished with wealth and praise from a young age due to her engagement, she grew selfish, arrogant, and emotionally immature.[5][11][21] Following repeated provocations and an assault on Yuzu at an ayakashi banquet, clan head Nadeshiko strips Karin of her bride status, leading to her banishment alongside her parents.[5] After leaving her parents due to their financial demands, Karin works at a remote hot spring resort, reevaluates her past behavior, and eventually reconciles with Yota.[17]

Hayaomote Shinonome (東雲 早生) and Natsume Shinonome (東雲 南津梅), voiced in the anime by Masaki Terasoma and Miho Haishi, are Yuzu and Karin's parents. Materialistic and self-serving, they borrowed money from relatives to send Karin to Kakuriyo Academy, securing her marriage to Yota and relying on his funds.[17] After losing their allowances following Karin's banishment, they attempt to force Yuzu into an arranged marriage with a wealthy relative named Kamiya, resulting in severe punishment by Reiya and total disownment by Yuzu.[17][22]

Kanpei Shinonome (東雲 甘平) and Kiyomi Shinonome (東雲 清見), voiced in the anime by Wataru Yokojima and Sakiko Tamagawa, are Yuzu's paternal grandparents. Kind-hearted retirees, they were the only family members who showed genuine care toward Yuzu during her childhood.[4][5] With Reiya's help, they obtain the right to adopt Yuzu. Kiyomi is later revealed to descend from a branch of the Ichiryusai family.

Kiryuin Clan and Allies

Sou (ソウ) and Ao (アオ) are twin servant beasts created by Reiya's spiritual energy, voiced by Momoka Terasawa and Miyu Kobashi.[23] Taking the form of three-inch-tall children with white and black hair respectively, they serve as Yuzu's formidable personal bodyguards and are popular among her classmates.[23]

Sen'ya Kiryuin (鬼龍院 千夜), voiced by Akira Ishida, is Reiya's father and current head of the Kiryuin clan.[24] While outwardly easygoing and cheerful compared to his son, he possesses unmatched spiritual authority and ruthless cunning toward rivals.[24] His wife, Sara Kiryuin (鬼龍院 沙良), voiced by Misato Fukuen, maintains a youthful appearance and warm demeanor.[24] Despite entering an arranged marriage, Sen'ya and Sara share a deeply loving relationship, and Sara co-hosts social tea gatherings for ayakashi brides alongside Nadeshiko.[24]

Takamichi Araki (荒鬼 高道) is voiced by Taito Ban in the anime and portrayed by Takami Hyodo in the live-action film.[25][26] A qualified attorney and heir to the prominent Araki branch family, he has served as Reiya's trusted secretary and chauffeur since childhood.[25] Initial rumors alleging a romantic affair between Takamichi and Reiya cause tension until debunked.[25] Takamichi later marries Sakurako Oniyama.[25] His grandfather, Tendo Araki (荒鬼 天道), a former elder aide, firmly opposes human brides marrying into the ogre clan, though he defers to Reiya's grandmother Kuran Kiryuin.

Oga Oniyama (鬼山 桜河), voiced by Nobunaga Shimazaki, is heir to the leading branch clan of the ogres and vice president of Reiya's corporate group.[25] His younger sister, Sakurako Oniyama (鬼山 桜子), voiced by Aya Endo in the anime and portrayed by Ayana Shiramoto in the film, is a high-ranking ogre and Reiya's former betrothed.[25][26] An avid fan of boys' love literature, Sakurako mistakenly believed Reiya and Takamichi were lovers, leading her to establish a fan club before the confusion was resolved. She eventually reconciles with Yuzu and marries Takamichi.[25]

Yukino (雪乃), voiced by Akiho Suzumoto, serves as Yuzu's dedicated personal attendant in the Kiryuin mansion, having won the position through a competitive contest among servants.

Other Ayakashi and Associates

Yota Kogetsu (狐月 瑶太) is voiced by Yuto Suzuki and Chiaki Kobayashi in the reading play, and by Ryota Osaka with Mikako Komatsu (as a child) in the anime.[12][13][19][27] He is portrayed by Kentaro Ito in the live-action film, with Haru Takagi playing his younger self.[20][26] A golden-haired, high-ranking fox ayakashi, Yota commands spiritual flames and consciousness manipulation.[21] His devotion to Karin leads him to burn Yuzu, drawing Reiya's wrath.[21] After Karin's bride status is annulled, Yota endures five years of separation while quietly watching over her until they reconcile.[17]

Nadeshiko Kosetsu (狐雪 撫子) is voiced by Kaho Koda in the anime and portrayed by Machiko Ono in the film.[20][26] A nine-tailed fox who heads the Kosetsu clan, she is the supreme authority among fox spirits.[11] She speaks in an old-fashioned way, and after Karin attacks Yuzu at an ayakashi gathering, she annuls Karin's engagement to Yota and banishes Karin and her parents.. Her eldest son Fujishiro is married to a human woman named Nanako, who frequently attends bride tea parties.

Toko (透子) is voiced by Nichika Omori in the reading play, Sayaka Senbongi in the anime, and portrayed by Momoko Tanabe in the film.[12][13][19][26] Yuzu's spirited high school classmate, Toko was chosen in middle school as the bride of Tokichi Nekota.[11][21] She fiercely defends Yuzu and detests Karin.[11] During her university years, Toko becomes pregnant and pauses her studies to give birth to a daughter named Riko, later celebrating her formal wedding.

Tokichi Nekota (猫田 東吉, Nekota Tokichi), nicknamed Nyankichi, is voiced by Genki Okawa in the reading play, Natsuki Hanae in the anime, and portrayed by Nanto Tanihara in the film.[12][13][19] A cat demon (nekomata) of lower standing, he is devoted to Toko and happily submits to her strong-willed authority.[11][21]

Shuto Hebizuka (蛇塚 柊斗) is the imposing heir of the snake ayakashi clan and a close friend of Tokichi. Despite his intimidating two-meter frame, he has a gentle, sensitive nature. After his arranged engagement to his bride Azusa ends, Anna Shirayuki (白雪 杏那), a reserved snow woman (yukionna), confesses her feelings to him; they become a couple, and she later accepts his proposal..

Saku (サク) was a maiden of the half-deity Ichiryusai lineage, the maiden of prophecy, and the first human bride.[17] She offered herself as an ogre's bride to maintain harmony between humans and ayakashi.[17] Although forcibly separated from her husband by her clan, her spiritual bond reincarnates across generations into Yuzu and Reiya.[17][28] Saku is guarded by an ancient silver Dragon capable of altering size, manipulating weather, and bending luck, who becomes Yuzu's guardian.[29]

Yukinosuke Tsumori (津守 幸之助) is an onmyoji hostile toward Reiya who orchestrates kidnapping attempts against Yuzu.[25] His younger half-brother Kosuke Tsumori (津守 浩介) was Yuzu's childhood friend and her first love.. Kosuke defects from Yukinosuke's plots to protect Yuzu before departing for ascetic spiritual training.

Mikoto Ichiryusai (一龍斎 ミコト) is the daughter of a family protected by a dragon.[5] Arrogant, she publicly slaps and humiliates Yuzu, and her family declines after it loses the silver dragon's protection..

Production and Background

Author Kureha conceived the concept upon learning about the first Novema! Character Short Story Contest centered on the theme of ayakashi and romance.[30][31] The foundational concept emerged from an imagined meeting scene and the line, 'I've found my bride'.[30][31] Originally published online under the title Oni no Hanayome wa Aisaretai on platforms including Novema, Shosetsuka ni Naro, and Alphapolis, the work won the Excellence Award at the contest and earned a print publishing contract.[10][30][32][33][34][35]

When crafting Reiya's characterization, Kureha consciously avoided excessive romantic intensity.[36][37] Guided by the personal belief that love should have clear moral boundaries, Kureha balanced Reiya's protective instincts with respect for Yuzu's autonomy, citing the episode where Reiya forces her to resign from her part-time job as a situation requiring careful moderation.[36][37][38]

Media

The Ogre's Bride expanded from web fiction into light novels, manga, a stage reading, live-action cinema, and an animated television series.[6][7][8]

Starts Publishing released the first volume under its Starts Shuppan Bunko imprint on October 28, 2020.[39][40] The story comprises a five-volume initial arc, followed by the Newlywed Arc (Shinkon-hen) and special prequel episodes.[41][42][43] Sun Color Culture published a Chinese translation of the first volume on July 31, 2026..[40]

A manga adaptation illustrated by Jun Togashi began serialization in Starts Publishing's digital magazine noicomi on December 24, 2021.[55][56] NTT Solmare publishes the English localization digitally on MangaPlaza.[2][57] Ten tankobon volumes have been published under the noicomi COMICS imprint as of July 2026.[58][59]

Reading Play

A stage reading play produced by the Oni no Hanayome Reading Play Production Committee was performed at Hamagin Hall Viamare on November 18 and 19, 2023.[12][13] Directed by Yuriko Hoshina with scripts by Satoko Okazaki, the cast alternated between dates.[12][13] Hina Suguta and Masaaki Mizunaka played Yuzu and Reiya on November 18, succeeded by Manaka Iwami and Toshiki Masuda on November 19.[12][13] Akari Kageyama and Yuto Suzuki played Karin and Yota on the first day, followed by Sayaka Senbongi and Chiaki Kobayashi on the second day.[12][13] Nichika Omori and Genki Okawa performed Toko and Tokichi Nekota on both days.[12][13]

Live-Action Film

A live-action feature film produced by Darwin and distributed by Shochiku was announced in December 2025 and released in Japanese cinemas on March 27, 2026, with a runtime of 122 minutes.[1][6][16][71][72] Directed by Chihiro Ikeda from a screenplay by Manato Hamada, the film stars Ren Nagase as Reiya Kiryuin and Ai Yoshikawa as Yuzu Shinonome.[6][16][72] Erina Koyama composed the film score.[73] The theme song is 'Waltz for Lily' by King and Prince, and the image song is 'Ray' by Yu-ka.[73][74]

The supporting cast includes Kentaro Ito as Yota, Rin Kataoka as Karin, Takami Hyodo as Takamichi, Ayana Shiramoto as Sakurako, Momoko Tanabe as Toko, Nanto Tanihara as Tokichi, Kyusaku Shimada as Usui, and Machiko Ono as Nadeshiko, with appearances by Toshinori Omi, Hidekazu Mashima, Hana Hizuki, and Atsushi Hashimoto.[20][26][75]

Television Anime

An anime television series produced by Colored Pencil Animation Japan was announced on June 10, 2025, and aired twelve episodes between July 5 and September 20, 2026.[7][76][77][78][79] The production was directed by Kazuhito Omiya, with series composition by Yumi Kamakura, character designs by Hikari Tanaka and Hiroko Shigekuni, sound direction by Kazuhiro Wakabayashi at Rakuonsha, and music composed by Masaru Yokoyama.[14][15][79] The opening theme is 'Hitokoto' performed by ClariS, the ending theme is 'Shinboshi' sung by Ikusaburo Yamazaki, and 'Meltria' by Unas serves as an insert song.[79][80] The series was licensed globally by Crunchyroll and in Asian territories by Medialink.[81][82]

Episode 1, 'Destiny' (aired July 5, 2026), written and storyboarded by Yumi Kamakura and directed by Zhu Yihan, introduces the coexistence of ayakashi and humans.[83] After her boyfriend dumps her and Yota burns her hands following a dispute with Karin, Yuzu encounters Reiya on a bridge, who heals her and identifies her as his bride. Episode 2, 'Special Someone' (aired July 12, 2026), sees Reiya end his arranged engagement to Sakurako, Yuzu meet Sou and Ao, the small yokai Reiya created to protect her, and Reiya comfort Yuzu after Karin throws her belongings into the river.

Episode 3, 'Decision' (aired July 19, 2026), depicts Yuzu and Reiya visiting her parents to finalize her adoption by her grandparents, with Reiya throwing her father across the room and setting Yota on fire until Yuzu asks him to stop. Episode 4, 'Is Their Love for Their Brides Eternal?' (aired July 26, 2026), shows Yuzu visiting her friend Toko, learning from Nyankichi that human brides are the ogres' only exploitable weakness, and discovering that Reiya ended her employment at a cafe so he can fully support her.

Episode 5, 'My Rival is a Capable Secretary', covers Yuzu's work at the Kiryuin Group alongside Reiya's aide Takamichi and the presents and letters Reiya gives her on her 18th birthday. Episode 6, 'Toko and Nyankichi', focuses on Toko reassuring Yuzu about her feelings for Reiya as Sakurako prepares to confront Yuzu alone. Episode 7, 'Reiya's Secret Lover', features Sakurako telling Yuzu that Takamichi is Reiya's secret lover, Yuzu realizing that she loves Reiya, and Yota hypnotizing Yuzu's guards, allowing Karin to enter her grandparents' home.

Episode 8, 'The Bewitching Visitor', shows Sou and Ao stopping Yuzu's father from kidnapping her, after which Reiya demands a meeting with Nadeshiko and Karin is placed under house arrest. Episode 9, 'Self-Awareness', shows Yuzu kissing Reiya for the first time and Reiya resolving the rumors about him and Takamichi, after which Yuzu confesses her love. Episode 10, 'The Demon Banquet', depicts the banquet at which Karin shoves Yuzu down the mansion's main staircase.

Episode 11, 'The Bride Sisters', reveals the sisters' childhood background; Reiya catches Yuzu with his powers, and Nadeshiko declares that Karin is no longer Yota's bride. Episode 12, 'The Ogre's Bride', depicts Karin's banishment, Yuzu's rejection of Yamato and Sakurako's engagement to Takamichi, with Reiya planning to marry Yuzu after college and promising to wait until she is ready.

The anime was released on six Blu-ray and DVD volumes from September 30, 2026, through February 24, 2027. A web radio program, WEB Radio Ayakashi Mijikayo, was released on the anime's official website and YouTube as a series of short radio dramas performed by the anime's voice actors, including Yuichiro Umehara with Saori Hayami, Ryota Osaka with Manaka Iwami, and Yuichiro Umehara with Taito Ban. Promotional programs included a dialogue between Saori Hayami and kimono designer Katsuya Inoue, and an episode commentary by marriage consultant Miyuki Uekusa.[84][85]

Reception

The series achieved strong commercial results for Starts Publishing.[2] In its corporate financial report for the first quarter of fiscal year 2023, Starts Publishing reported a 268.5% year-on-year increase in net profit and strong sales across its comic and light literature imprints, with The Ogre's Bride reportedly making a large contribution to sales.[2] By June 2025, cumulative circulation surpassed 5.8 million copies, expanding beyond 7.5 million copies including digital editions by July 2026.[86][87]

The manga adaptation won the Grand Prize at NTT Solmare's Digital Comic Awards in 2023 and ranked first in the shojo manga category on Comic Cmoa for two consecutive years from 2022.[88][89][90][91] It also placed third at the 7th Tsutaya Comic Awards in 2023.[1][92] Literary critic Ryuichi Taniguchi observed that the narrative resonated with audiences by depicting a mistreated girl discovering healing, emotional rescue, and empowerment after becoming an ogre's bride.[38]

Shared Universe

The Ogre's Bride shares a world with Kureha's light novel series Onihime: Unmei no Chigiri, also published by Starts Publishing Bunko and adapted into manga by Jun Togashi under the title Onihime: Yoiyami no Chieketsu.[93][94] The male protagonist of Onihime, Hyōu Ichiryusai, is a military commander in the government anti-ayakashi organization Hoshikage and a distant relative of Yuzu.[93][95] The female protagonist, Rokka Amaki, belongs to the Arbiter bloodline responsible for maintaining ayakashi order and is a distant relative of Reiya.[93][95]
