有袋類(ゆうたいるい、Marsupialia)は、後獣下綱(Metatheria)に属する哺乳類の1つの下綱であり、オーストララシア、ウォラシア、および南北アメリカ大陸に固有である。[1][2][3]有袋類は生殖生物学の面で真獣類(胎盤哺乳類)と区別される。雌は通常2つの側腟と2つの子宮を持ち、短い妊娠期間を経て未熟な状態で産んだ仔を母乳頭に付着させ、多くは「有袋目(マースピウム)」と呼ばれる腹部の育児嚢の中で母体の外で発育を完了させる。[1][3][4][5]有袋類は陸上の幅広い生態的地位を占めている。[6]

分類と命名

学名「Marsupialia」は「育児嚢」を意味するラテン語の「marsupium」に由来し、これはさらに古代ギリシャ語の「marsippos」から借用されたものである。[7]この用語は1811年にドイツの動物学者ヨハン・カール・ヴィルヘルム・イリガーによって導入され、彼は当初、有袋類をいくつかの霊長類グループとともに哺乳類の有指目(Pollicata)内の1科として設立した。[8][9][10][11]1816年、フランスの解剖学者アンリ・マリー・デュクロテ・ド・ブレインビル(Henri Marie Ducrotay de Blainville)は、有袋類に対して「Didelphia」(「2つの子宮」の意)という用語を提案し、単胎類(真獣類)や単孔類(卵生哺乳類)に対置したが、彼の用語は概ね取って代わられた。[11][12]1816年後半、ジョルジュ・キュヴィエはすべての有袋類を単一の分類学上の目として認めた。[8][13]1880年、イギリスの生物学者トマス・ヘンリー・ハクスリーは、原獣類と真獣類の間の移行的な進化段階を示すために「後獣下綱(Metatheria、『獣の先』の意)」という用語を導入した。[11]現代の分類学者は通常、Marsupialiaをすべての現生有袋類の最後の共通祖先とその子孫を含むクラウン群として扱い、一方Metatheriaは、この共通祖先よりも前に分岐した幹分類群も包含する、より広範な総クレードとして使用している。[14][15]1997年、J・A・W・キルシュ(J. A. W. Kirsch)とその共同研究者らは、Marsupialiaの下綱階級を正式なものとした。[13]

歴史的に、有袋類の分類は頭蓋や歯の形態、特に多門歯性歯列(特化していない多数の下部切歯)と双門歯性歯列(前方に向く1対の拡大した下部切歯)の区別や、後足の第2趾と第3趾が共通の皮膚の鞘内で癒合する合指足(せんどくちゅう)に大きく依存していた。[16][17]20世紀の間、これらの形質は分類学的な混乱を引き起こした。なぜなら、南アメリカのラットオポッサム類(少歯目、Paucituberculata)はオーストラリアの双門歯類と双門歯性を共有している一方、オーストラリアのバンディクート類は双門歯類と合指足を共有しているからである。[16]1977年の血清学的調査により、少歯目と双門歯目の間の近縁な系統的親縁関係は否定され、双門歯性と合指性の両方が収斂進化の形質を表していることが示された。[18][19][20]

1982年、フレデリック・S・スラレイ(Frederick S. Szalay)は、足首関節の足根骨形態、具体的には距骨と踵骨の間の関節に基づき、有袋類をアメリカ有袋総目(Ameridelphia、新世界の有袋類)とオーストラリア有袋総目(Australidelphia、オーストラリアの有袋類およびその近縁種)の2つの大きなクレードに分割した。[21][22][23][24]その後の形態学的および分子系統学的研究により、アメリカ有袋総目が側系統群であることが示された。[24][25][26][27]南アメリカのミナミオポッサム科(Dromiciops gliroides、チリオポッサム)はミクロビオテリウム目に配置されており、オーストラリアの有袋類が持つ派生的な距骨・踵骨関節構造を共有しており、他の南アメリカの系統ではなくオーストラリア有袋総目の中に位置づけられる。[22][24][25][28][29]

現生の有袋類は7つの目に分類され、およそ21の現生科を含んでいる。[16][30][31]アメリカの2つの目は、ディデルフィス科に90種以上の現生種を含むアメリカオポッサム類を含むオポッサム目(Didelphimorphia)と、ケアノレステス科のラットオポッサム類を含む少歯目(Paucituberculata)である。[16]オーストラリア有袋総目には、南アメリカのミクロビオテリウム目(チリオポッサムを含むミクロビオテリウム科)のほか、オーストラリア区固有の4つの目、すなわちフクロモグラ目(Notoryctemorphia、フクロモグラ科)、フクロネコ目(Dasyuromorphia、フクロネコ科、フクロアリクイ科、および絶滅したフクロオオカミ科)、バンディクート目(Peramelemorphia、バンディクート科、ミミナガバンディクート科、および絶滅したフクロカタビラ科)、および双門歯目(Diprotodontia)が含まれる。[16]双門歯目はウォンバット形亜目(コアラとウォンバット)、クスクス形亜目(クスクスやポッサム類)、カンガルー形亜目(カンガルー、ワラビー、ネズミカンガルーなど)に細分される。有袋類または幹後獣類の中で認識されている絶滅した目には、ヤルカパリドン目(Yalkaparidontia)、多結節類に似たポリドロピモルファ目(Polydolopimorphia)、およびスパラソドン目(Sparassodonta)が含まれる。[32][33]

進化史

後獣類と真獣類の間の分岐は、分子時計と化石の発見から、ジュラ紀または白亜紀前期、1億2500万から1億9300万年前に起こったと推定されている。[34][35][36]最古の後獣類の化石は約1億1000万年前のもので、北アメリカ西部から知られている。[37][38]中国遼寧省の義県組から発見され、1億2500万年前にさかのぼるシノデルフィス・スラレイ(Sinodelphys szalayi)は、長らく最も初期の後獣類化石として記述されていた。[39][40][41][42]しかし、真獣類のアンボレステス・ジョウイ(Ambolestes zhoui)との比較を含むその後の再評価により、シノデルフィスは真獣類のメンバーとして再解釈された。[37][38][43]幹後獣類の化石は、主に歯の特徴によって真獣類と区別され、特に後獣類では顎の象限あたり4対の臼歯が存在するのに対し、真獣類では最大3対である。[44][45][46]白亜紀基底部の後獣類の放射には、デルタテロドン類(オクラテリディウムやアトカテリディウムなど)や、ココペリアやアジアテリウムなどの初期の有袋様類(Marsupialiformes)が含まれていた。[34][47][48][49]

白亜紀後期、後獣類はローラシア大陸全体で一般的であり、形態学的に多様であった。特に北アメリカでは、スタゴドン科(骨を砕くディデルホドンなど)や「アルファドント科」などの科が豊富であった。[34][47][50][51][52]後獣類は白亜紀末の絶滅において深刻な絶滅に見舞われ、真獣類や多丘歯類よりも大きな衰退を経験した。[50][51][53]幹後獣類は、ヘルペトテリウム科やペラデクタ科のメンバーを含め、ヨーロッパ、アジア、北アメリカで新生代まで生き残り、漸新世にはペラテリウム・アフリカヌム(Peratherium africanum)とともに北アフリカに短期間植民地を築いたが、中新世までに北半球から姿を消した。[53][54][55][56][57]

後獣類は、おそらくアベス海嶺(Aves Ridge)を経由して北アメリカから南アメリカへと広がったが、これが白亜紀後期に起きたのか古生代初期(古第三紀初頭)に起きたのかについては議論がある。[58][59]そこの最古の後獣類化石は、およそ6450万から6300万年前の古第三紀初頭のものである。[59][60]「島大陸」としての長期にわたる新生代の地理的孤立の間に、南アメリカは主要な放射適応の中心地となった。[59][61]オポッサム目(Didelphimorphia)や少歯目(Paucituberculata)は、ポリドロピモルファ目(Polydolopimorphia)のような明確な系統と並行して多様化した。[32][62]ポリドロピモルファ目内のアルギロラグス科は、トビネズミなどの砂漠のげっ歯類と解剖学的に収斂した、二足歩行で跳躍するアルギロラグスのような形態を生み出した。[32]南アメリカの大型哺乳類捕食者の地位は、ボリハイエナ、大型のプロボリハイエナ、サーベルタイガー状のティラコスミルスなどのスパラソドン類によって占められていた。[61][63]南アメリカでは、固有の有蹄類や貧歯類によって、後獣類は大型草食動物の地位から締め出されていた。[64][65]約300万年前の鮮新世にパナマ地峡が形成されると、南北アメリカ大交流が動物相の混交を引き起こした。[61][66][67]スパラソドン類は絶滅した一方、ディデルフィス科のオポッサム類は北への移動に成功し、バージニアオポッサム(Didelphis virginiana)がカナダほどの北の北アメリカ全域に定着することにつながった。[62][66][68][69]

有袋類は、ドレーク海峡と深層のタスマニア回廊が開通する前の始新世初期、約5000万から5500万年前に南極の陸橋を経由してオーストラリアに到達した。[70][71][72][73][74]当時、南極はナンキョクブナ(Nothofagus)の森林を伴う温暖な気候を維持していた。[71][75]オーストラリアで確認されている最古の有袋類化石は、南東クイーンズランド州の5460万年前のティンガマラ(Tingamarra)局所動物群からのジャルティア・ムルゴネンシス(Djarthia murgonensis)である。[76][77][78]ジャルティアは原始的なオーストラリア有袋総目の足根骨形態を有しており、ゴンドワナ大陸全体でのオーストラリア有袋総目の放射適応の仮説を支持している。[76][79]オーストラリアの化石記録においては、ティンガマラとリバーズリーおよび中央オーストラリアの漸新世後期の堆積物との間に約3000万年の空白が存在する。[80][81]漸新世後期から中新世初期までに、ヤルカパリドン目のような絶滅グループとともに、すべての現代のオーストラリアの目がすでに雨林の生態系に確立されていた。[80][82]

オーストラリアが新第三紀を通じて北方に移動するにつれて、南極周辺環流が形成され、大陸の乾燥化と、中新世後期以降の中温性雨林の后退につながった。[83][84]開けた草原の拡大は、草食性のカンガルー科の放射適応を刺激した。[85]海面が繰り返し低下することで、オーストラリア、ニューギニア、タスマニアがサフル大陸へと統合される陸橋が形成され、有袋類がニューギニアへ、そしてスラウェシやマルク諸島などのウォラシアの一部へとウェーバー線を越えて分散することが可能になった。[86][87]更新世の間、オーストラリアは、サイほどの大きさのディプロトドン・オプタタゥム(体重が最大2.7〜2.8トンに達する)、プロコプトドン(体高が2〜3メートルに達する)などの巨大な短顔カンガルー、および体長1.5メートル、体重160キログラムに達した頂点捕食者のティラコレオ・カルニフェックス(「有袋類のライオン」)を含む大型動物相を支えていた。[88][89][90][91][92]この大型動物相は、およそ人類がオーストラリアに到着した時期である5万1000年前から3万8000年前にかけて大部分が絶滅した。その原因については議論されており、人間による狩猟を非難する研究者もいれば、気候変動を非難する研究者もいる。[90][93][94]

解剖学と生理学

有袋類は、大きさと構造の比率が大きく異なる。現代の形態は、頭胴長55〜65ミリメートル、体重約4〜5グラムのオーストラリアチビフクロネズミ(Planigale ingrami)から、頭胴長1.4〜1.8メートル、体重最大85〜90キログラムに達するアカカンガルー(Osphranter rufus)まで多岐にわたる。[95][96][97][98]絶滅した形態は、ディプロトドン・オプタタゥムの2700〜2800キログラムに代表されるように、より重い体重に達していた。[88][90][92]性的二形は一般的であり、多くのフクロネコ科やカンガルー科の種では、オスの体重がメスの最大2倍に達する。対照的に、フクロミツスイ(Tarsipes rostratus)のメスはオスよりも大きい。[99]真獣類の身体プランとの収斂は多様な科で見られ、オオカミ(フクロオオカミ科)、モグラ(フクロモグラ科)、ムササビ(フクロモモンガ科およびフクロフタオビモモンガ科)、穴を掘るげっ歯類(ウォンバット科)に相当する有袋類を生み出している。[89][100][101][102]

有袋類の体温は、同様の大きさの真獣類のそれよりも平均して低く、通常34〜36℃前後(35℃または35.5℃が頻繁に報告される)であり、真獣類の標準より1.5〜2.5℃低い差を表している。[103][104][105]寒さや食物不足の際のエネルギー消費を管理するため、小型のフクロネコ類、ピグミーポッサム類、フクロモモンガ類の間では日和見的休眠(トーパー)が広く見られる。[106]オーストラリア東部の高山地帯に生息するマウンテンピグミーポッサム(Burramys parvus)は、体温が約2℃まで低下する深部のトーパーの状態を数日間続ける発作に入り、最長7ヶ月間にわたって真の季節的冬眠を行う。[107]乾燥に対する生理的適応には、砂漠生息者における水分保持メカニズムや、ロットネスト島のクオッカ(Setonix brachyurus)による塩分濃度の高い海水の耐性などが含まれる。[108]

頭蓋骨と歯牙

有袋類の頭蓋骨は、真獣類の頭蓋骨と区別するいくつかの独特な頭蓋の特徴を備えている。脳函は比較的小さく狭い。[3][109][110]鼻骨は後方に拡大し、頬骨は拡大して後方に伸び、鱗状骨と直接関与して下顎関節のための下顎窩を形成する。[109][110]涙孔(foramen lacrimale)は眼窩の前縁の外側に位置する。[109]骨化した聴胞は、真獣類のように鼓骨ではなく、主に翼状骨によって形成される。[110][111][112]骨質の硬口蓋は、コアラとフクロミツスイを除いて、一貫して大きな窓または空隙を特徴としている。[109][110][113]下顎角(processus angularis)は下顎基部の下で内側に湾曲しており、内側翼突筋の付着部位として機能する。この特徴は、コアラとフクロミツスイを除くほぼすべての有袋類に見られる。[109][110]

有袋類の歯の構造と生え変わりは、真獣類のパターンとは異なる。原始的な後獣類の歯式は 5.1.3.4 / 4.1.3.4 であり、1象限あたり合計50本の歯になり、上顎に5本、下顎に4本の切歯、1本の犬歯、3本の前臼歯、4本の臼歯を特徴とする。[109][114][115]対照的に、原始的な真獣類の歯式は 3.1.4.3 / 3.1.4.3 で、合計44本の歯である。[114]多くの有袋類は40〜50本の歯を維持しているが、特化した系統では歯の数が減少している。[109][114][115]歯の生え変わりは第3前臼歯に完全に限定されており、第3前臼歯よりも前にあるすべての歯は、乳歯の先行なしに永久歯として直接萌出する。[109][115]

歯のモルフォタイプは、栄養の特化を反映している。オポッサム類は、雑食性に適した一般的なトリボスフェニック型(三尖型)およびディラムドドン型の臼歯を維持している。[116]ラットオポッサム類は、拡大して前方に突出した下部切歯と特化した剪断用の歯冠を持つ。[117]フクロネコ目では、歯列は肉食または食虫用に修正されている。絶滅したフクロオオカミは 4.1.3.4 / 3.1.3.4(46本)の剪断用の歯列を持っていた一方、シロアリを食べるフクロアリクイは退化して単純化した犬歯後の歯を持ち、歯の数が48から52本に増加している。[112][118]双門歯目は、最大3対の上部切歯に対置される、細長くて前方に突出した1対の下部切歯を持つことにちなんで名付けられている。[110][119][120]草食性の双門歯類は持続的な摩耗への適応を示している。ウォンバットは歯根がなく継続的に成長する(ヒプセロドント型)切歯と臼歯を持ち、一方カンガルー類は臼歯の漸進(多生歯性)を示し、頬歯が顎のラインに沿ってゆっくりと前方に移動し、摩耗するにつれて抜け落ちる。[110][112][119][121]

頭蓋骨以外の骨格と運動

有袋類の頭蓋骨以外の骨格(体幹・四肢骨格)は通常、骨盤の恥骨結合から前方に突き出た上恥骨(ossa epipubica)を特徴とする。[3][4][122]両性および育児嚢のない分類群の両方に存在し、これらの骨は主に育児嚢を支えるのではなく、体幹を支えて後肢の力学を助ける腹筋のための係留場所を提供する。[3][4][123]上恥骨は単孔類や基底的な化石哺乳類にも存在し、現代の真獣類が失った原始的な哺乳類の形質を表している。[3][4][123]上恥骨は、絶滅したフクロオオカミなどの特定の分類群では縮小しているか存在しない。[124]骨化した膝蓋骨は現代の有袋類では一般的に存在しないが、軟骨組織は存在する。[125][126]

運動の適応は足の構造と相関している。樹上性のオポッサム類、クスクス類、ピグミーポッサム類は、把持を助ける爪のない対向可能な母趾(第1趾)を備えた、指の数が5本の前後肢を維持している。[122][127]バンディクート類や双門歯類では、後足は合指足を示し、第2趾と第3趾が共通の皮膚の鞘の中に束ねられており、グルーミング用の櫛として機能する小さな爪のみが突き出ている。[122][128]陸上の走行性および跳躍性のグループでは、第4趾が長くなって足の主軸を形成し、母趾は縮小しているか存在しない。[122][129][130]カンガルー類は、細長い第4中足骨を持つ細い後足、弾力性のある脚の腱、高速での二足跳躍時にカウンターウェイトとして使用される重い筋肉質の尾、および低速での五足歩行時の5番目の支持肢を示す。[129][131][132]穴を掘るフクロモグラは第3および第4の手の指にシャベル状の爪を持っている一方、絶滅したミツヅメバンディクート(Chaeropus ecaudatus)は手の指を偶蹄類のそれに似た2つの機能的な蹄に縮小させていた。[112][133]四肢の間の飛膜(パタギウム)は、3つの樹上性双門歯類の系統で独立して進化した:フクロモモンガ科、フクロフタオビモモンガ科、リングテールポッサム科(オオフクロモモンガ)。[101][134]

神経系と感覚系

有袋類の脳には、真獣類の新皮質半球を接続する主要な交連線維束である脳梁がない。[4][135][136]半球間のコミュニケーションは、代わりに拡大した前交連によって仲介され、その線維は双門歯類では内包を通って、バンディクート類やフクロネコ類では線条体の外側縁に沿って経路をとる。[135][137][138]体重に対する脳の大きさは一般的に同程度の大きさの真獣類よりも小さいが、相対的な新皮質容積は樹上性双門歯類で高くなっている。有袋類の中で最も高い脳化指数はシマポッサム(Dactylopsila trivirgata)で見られる。[138][139][140]

有袋類の視覚受容器の構造には、網膜の錐体細胞内の色付きの油滴や複錐体などの祖先的な哺乳類の形質が含まれており、これらは真獣類が失った特徴である。[141]哺乳類の中で霊長類に固有のものと考えられてきた3色型色覚は、短波長、中波長、長波長に敏感な3つの異なる錐体光色素に基づいて、ファットテール・ダンバート(Sminthopsis crassicaudata)やフクロミツスイ(Tarsipes rostratus)を含むいくつかの有袋類で独立して進化した。[142][143]有袋類の3色型色覚はX染色体に関連していない。[143]対照的に、地中性のフクロモグラ(Notoryctes)は、網膜、視神経、眼筋を完全に欠く、退化して皮下に埋め込まれた目を持っている。[144]嗅覚はほとんどの種で発達しており(マクロスマティック)、機能的なヤコブソン器官(鋤鼻器)と接続した鼻口蓋管を伴う。[145][146]フェロモンの手がかりを検出するために、ピグミーポッサムには副嗅球が存在する。[145]聴覚の周波数感度は一般に真獣類よりも狭く、高い最小閾値を示すが、フクロネコ属の一種(Dasyurus hallucatus)は鋭い聴覚検出能力を示す。[145]

遺伝学とゲノム科学

有袋類の核型は通常、少数の大型染色体からなり、2n = 14または2n = 22のいずれかの二倍体数を持つ分類群全体で二峰性の分布を示す。[135][147]祖先の後獣類の核型は2n = 14として再構築されており、これは多くの現生のフクロネコ科やディデルフィス科の間で保存されている補体である。[135][147][148]カンガルー類の間では染色体の再編成、融合、転座が起こる。スワンプワラビー(Wallabia bicolor)は、メス(XX)で2n = 10、オス(XY1Y2)で2n = 11という非典型的な派生染色体数を持つ。[148][149]有袋類における減数分裂の組換え頻度は脊椎動物全体で記録されている中で最も低い部類に入り、メスはオスよりも低い交叉率を示す。[148]

性決定はXY染色体システムを介して行われるが、有袋類の性染色体には真獣類に見られる偽常染色体対合領域がなく、減数分裂中にシナプシス複合体を形成しない。[148][150]用量補償は、真獣類のXist機構ではなく、RSXとして知られる長い非コードRNAによって媒介される、父系由来のX染色体の非ランダムで優先的な不活性化を介して発生する。[148][150]いくつかのバンディクート科の属は体細胞の性染色体消失を示し、生殖線内では両方を保持しながら、肝臓、血液、腸上皮の細胞から1つの性染色体(オスではY染色体、メスではX染色体の1つ)を系統的に排除する。[151]有袋類の核ゲノムの大きさは平均3.2〜3.4ギガベースであり、トランスポゾン(転移因子)の相当な割合を宿している。[135][152]ハイイロジネズミオポッサム(Monodelphis domestica)は、完全な核ゲノムが解読された最初の有袋類であった。[153]

生殖器系と初期発生

有袋類の泌尿生殖路は両性において二分されている。[4][154][155][156]胚発生の間、尿管はミュラー管の間を内側方向に通過するため、真獣類のように正中線に沿って単一の子宮と膣に融合することが妨げられる。[155]雌は2つの独立した側腟と2つの明確な子宮を持ち、それぞれに独自の頸部がある。[4][155][156][157]側腟は交尾後に精子を輸送する。[5][157]分娩は、2つの側腟の間の正中線に沿って泌尿生殖洞に直接開口する中央の中央膣(仮性膣管)を介して行われる。[3][4][5]ほとんどの分類群では、この産道は一時的なものであり、出産後に閉鎖するが、カンガルー科やフクロミツスイでは恒久的な開口通路として持続する。[4][158]泌尿生殖洞と直腸の両方が浅い総排出腔に開口する。[155][159][160]

オスの有袋類はペニスの前方に位置する陰嚢を持ち、真獣類のようにペニスの後方ではなく腹部に位置する外陰嚢を持つ。[3][161][162]地中性のフクロモグラでは、睾丸は腹腔内または鼠径管内に永久にとどまる。[161]ペニスは弛緩しているときは泌尿生殖洞の内部でS字状の曲線を描いて格納され、勃起すると前方に湾曲する。[154][163]陰茎頭は、ほとんどの科でメスの2つの側腟に対応する2つの突起に二分されているが、カンガルー類やフクロモグラでは分かれていない。[154][164][165][166][167]副生殖腺は前立腺と1〜3対の尿道球腺に限定されており、膨大部、精嚢、凝固腺は存在しない。[168][169][170][171]精巣上体での成熟中に精子が先体表面に沿ってペアで整列する精子のペアリングは、アメリカオポッサム目と少歯目に固有のものであり、オーストラリア有袋総目では失われている。[172]
