Chainsmoker Cat is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by the artist collective NyanNyanFactory, which began serialization in Kodansha's seinen manga magazine Weekly Young Magazine in February 2023.[1][2] Set in an alternate modern Japan where beastfolk live alongside humans, the dark comedy follows the misadventures of Yaniko Sato, an impoverished catgirl whose life revolves around an extreme nicotine addiction and erratic neighbors in an apartment building.[1] A television anime series adaptation produced by Bibury Animation Studios premiered in July 2026.[3][4]

Production and publication history

The series was originally created by the manga collective NyanNyanFactory and published independently on the social media platform Twitter.[2] After attracting popularity online, the manga was published as a special one-shot feature in Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine before being approved for full commercial serialization.[2] According to NyanNyanFactory, one reason for agreeing to commercial serialization was the high manuscript fee offered by the editorial department of Weekly Young Magazine.[5] Within the story, the work is shown hoping for serialization in Houbunsha's Manga Time Kirara, but its vulgar style, including smoking and dirty jokes, and other circumstances led to serialization in Weekly Young Magazine instead, and the title-page blurb of the fourth chapter, counting the one-shot, tells it that Young Magazine is where it belongs. Each chapter of the manga is numbered with the unit mg. By August 2025, the manga had surpassed 400,000 copies in circulation.[6]

Following the debut of the series in Weekly Young Magazine, NyanNyanFactory became the target of an online defamation campaign.[7] In August 2023, prior to the announcement of results for the Next Manga Awards, Chicchi Yukinaga, the author of the martial arts manga Satsudo serialized in the same magazine, began a defamation campaign against NyanNyanFactory.[7] Yukinaga posted defamatory remarks to NyanNyanFactory's social accounts and sent messages to commercial partners falsely claiming that the creator had a prior criminal conviction for sex crimes and demanding that they cease working together.[7] On September 7, 2023, the editorial department of Weekly Young Magazine issued a public statement announcing that they had consulted legal counsel to take formal legal action.[7] Internet personality Takizawa Gareso reported that Kodansha subsequently received an anonymous letter from someone who claimed to have posted the defamatory remarks and offered to pay 1,000,000 yen to settle the matter anonymously, and that a handwriting analysis by Kodansha identified Yukinaga as the letter's author.[7] According to the same account, Yukinaga subsequently admitted to Kodansha to running the defamation campaign against NyanNyanFactory and formally apologized.[7]

Setting and world-building

The story takes place in modern Japan within an alternate reality where humans coexist with beastfolk (jūjin).[1] Beastfolk share the general bodily structure of humans and speak human languages, but possess feline traits such as cat ears and tails.[1] They have far greater physical ability than humans, swim very well, have attractive looks, and keep a youthful appearance long into old age. However, they are very prone to addiction, for example to nicotine and alcohol, and tend to be slightly less intelligent than humans.[1][8] Some beastfolk act on animal instinct, for example by eating insects. Beastfolk can interbreed with humans, but any offspring born from such unions are always pure beastfolk rather than hybrids. The biological origin of beastfolk is unknown; because they suddenly appear in records about 400 years ago, some in the story claim that they came from outer space.

Discrimination against beastfolk is a social problem in the series. Discrimination appears to have existed since beastfolk first appear in records: a museum displays picture scrolls showing beastfolk forced to charge enemy positions with bamboo spears or bare hands, and clothing suggesting they were treated as sex slaves. In the anime, Imoko's class learns about the relationship beastfolk had with humans in Japan during the Edo period, including the Boshin War. Beastfolk are made to work for far lower wages than humans. Japanese law restricts their professional advancement, prohibiting beastfolk from practicing specialized white-collar professions such as medicine and law. Beastfolk who develop mad beast disease are put down at once, so vaccination against it is compulsory. Beastfolk born to two beastfolk parents do not receive legal family names at birth, requiring them to formally submit a petition to municipal offices upon reaching a specific age.

The primary setting is Nyagamihara, a municipal city in Kanagawa Prefecture based on the real city of Sagamihara.[1] Within the city lies the Special Beastfolk Designated S District, home to many beastfolk, with beastfolk festivals, free beastfolk health checkups and regular distribution by the health office of medicine to prevent mad beast disease. These programs have also led humans to discriminate against the district, and some areas have poor public safety and widespread prostitution. The neighboring large city of Machida, across the prefectural border, strictly enforces a smoking ban. The series features the NNN Group, a group that opposes smoking on the street.[9] Formally named Ningen Ningen Ningens (Humans Humans Humans), the mysterious group is based in Machida and hits any beastfolk it sees smoking while walking on the head with a baseball bat. Kemo no Te is a staffing agency for beastfolk in Nyagamihara; its receptionist is human but wears a cat-ear headband, and it sends beastfolk to jobs ranging from harsh cleaning work with a risk of explosion to assisting manga artists. The JUNOW-KI, a cigarette vending machine installed in the city, has AI that can tell whether a buyer is a beastfolk and what the buyer's body odor is like, and it is programmed never to sell cigarettes to beastfolk.

The series is set in a cheap apartment building in Nyagamihara where Yaniko and her neighbors live.[1][10][11] Its official name is Corpo Otani, a two-story building that outsiders usually call the Beastfolk Apartment. The building contains twelve residential units, each equipped with an individual kitchen, living room, and private bathroom. With the exception of Saori Tatsuno, all current tenants are female beastfolk. Tobacco Village is one of the villages in the Sixth Special District, home to beastfolk called the Alpha, a primordial beastfolk tribe. The village is surrounded by dense forest, and its main industry is making tobacco. A huge cylindrical object called Sekizo-sama stands in the village and can be seen even from the streets of Nyagamihara; the residents' clothing and buildings resemble those of the Jomon people, but the village also has mysterious high-tech items such as laser guns.

Characters

Yaniko Sato, also known by her monikers Yanineko and Yanikasu, is the central protagonist of the series.[11] She is a 21-year-old catgirl born on November 11 who lives alone in Corpo Otani.[12] Despite having an attractive face and a well-endowed figure, her unhygienic lifestyle, heavy junk food and alcohol consumption, and chronic smoking leave her emitting a pungent foul odor.[1] She has been an unrepentant chain smoker since her high school years, with Mevius 10mg serving as her primary brand.[1] Yaniko refers to herself as 'Nya', and her catchphrase is 'Even though Nya didn't do anything bad!' Lacking financial literacy, she gets by on casual day jobs and monthly payments from the city administration, and spends almost all the money she receives on new cigarettes. When she cannot buy new packs, she reuses spent cigarette butts or picks up loose smokes off the street, and she has caused several small fires in her room. Her mother named her 'Yaniko' after the infant gripped her finger like a cigarette immediately following delivery, ending her mother's ten-month pregnancy smoking hiatus.

Imoko Sato is Yaniko's responsible younger sister, a high school student who appears to be in her third year. Distinguished by thick eyebrows, silver hair, and red eyes, Imoko is an exemplary student who excels in both academic coursework and sports. She is popular with boys at school, but as a beastfolk she is sometimes targeted by prejudiced human students. Imoko despises smoking, enforcing a strict ban on tobacco in the Sato household. Despite her constant frustration with Yaniko, she often takes care of her sister's well-being. The series implies that Imoko is drawn to hopeless people who need looking after, and she turns down a nice boy named Shu when he confesses his feelings for her.

Shizue Sato is the widowed mother of Yaniko and Imoko. She is an inveterate smoker whose preferred brand is the unfiltered 20-cigarette Peace, known colloquially as 'Gold Peace'.[1] Shizue hides her smoking from Imoko; once, to fool Imoko watching through a monitoring camera in the living room, she hid an IQOS electronic cigarette inside an 'Unmeibo' snack. The family's pet Shiba Inu, Hanako, exposed that trick by eating the snack. Shizue dotes on Yaniko and sometimes smokes with her, and she often shifts the blame for her smoking onto Yaniko and others. Yaniko and Imoko's father was a human and has died; a memorial portrait of Shizue's late husband is kept in the family home.

Oya Otani is the 45-year-old landlord of Corpo Otani. A single, obese, bald man, Otani has an intimidating appearance and a foul mouth, but he is caring toward his tenants and belongs to the local volunteer fire brigade. Otani was apparently abused in childhood by his father, a Mild Seven smoker, and has a trauma about tobacco, though he is tolerant when a tenant asks permission to smoke. Before becoming a landlord, Otani was a company employee with a sturdy build, good looks and a full head of hair. In private, Otani possesses an intense sexual fetish for beastfolk; he keeps a canine beastfolk sex doll named Catherine in his closet and frequently experiences involuntary physical arousal during routine encounters with his tenants.

Yakuko Etsushimaru, nicknamed Yakuneko, is a 20-year-old catgirl tenant and Yaniko's closest high school junior.[1] A frequent smoker of Seven Stars cigarettes, she is Yaniko's regular companion in the apartment complex.[1] Behind closed doors, Yakuko consumes illicit narcotics, including marijuana and self-injected substances, though she insists that she remains sober. She is an ex-convict whose prior arrests resulted in dismissal from multiple part-time positions. Outside her drug use, Yakuko is polite, social and well-adjusted. Having belonged to her high school judo club, she possesses combat capabilities surpassed in the building only by Debuneko, and is one of the few tenants who holds a valid automobile driver's license.

Hameko Easygoing Anal Angel, known as Hameneko, is a gamer and video streamer who produces content on her 'Hame Channel', which boasts over 100,000 subscribers. Born without a surname, she submitted registration paperwork at the municipal office requesting the legal family name 'Yurufuwa*Tenshi' (Easygoing*Angel). An administrative clerk mistook the printed asterisk symbol for an anatomical representation of an anus, officially recording her surname as 'Yurufuwa Anaru Tenshi'. Hameko mainly smokes electronic heated tobacco because she does not want her room to turn yellow. She is quick to anger when things do not go her way, including while playing games, and tends to urinate when stressed.

Kaoruko Nishi, known as Kansaineko, is a fourth-year university student hailing from the Kansai region. She smokes Pianissimo and is one of the most sensible residents, never smoking in front of anyone who does not live in the apartment. Passionate about making others laugh, Kaoruko lacks talent for comedic delivery, and her attempts at humor often lead to awkward reactions. She is shown to know the TV show 'Zoom In!! Asa!' and B'z's 1990s hit 'LOVE PHANTOM', and some readers suspect that she lies about her age. Her younger brother, Shunran Nishi, is an ant-breeding catboy residing with relatives in Machida who frequently quarrels with Hameko. Their mother, Junko Nishi, is 44, lives in the family home in Kansai, and has been friends with Shizue Sato and Mizuna Kujou since high school.

Aruko Sakai, nicknamed Aruneko, is a 24-year-old university student who has repeated three academic years. She is small and was for a while mistaken by Imoko for an elementary school student, and in one episode the catgirls find all the things they had planted in her large hairdo. Aruko is a non-smoker with severe alcoholism who always drinks straight from bottles through a tube. Even one hour without alcohol brings on withdrawal symptoms, and in one episode her tremors make the entire apartment building shake. When drunk she tends to wander off, and once ended up as far away as Enoshima before Yakuko, who had hidden a GPS device in her hair, and Otani, who drove, brought her back. Her physician warned that her deteriorated liver function could prove fatal before college graduation. While attempting to obtain a driver's license to take her neighbors on road trips, she failed sober testing due to tremors and failed subsequent intoxicated testing despite exceptional vehicular control; she eventually secured a license and purchased a vehicle using 2,000,000 yen originally allocated for academic tuition.

Saori Tatsuno, known professionally as Ochinpo Tatsuro and nicknamed Mankasu, is a 32-year-old human erotic manga author. Apart from her, every tenant of Corpo Otani is a female beastfolk. A dedicated smoker of Hi-Lite Menthol, Saori publishes serialized manga in Weekly Nyang Magazine, but struggles with low sales and chaotic publication deadlines.[1] She regularly hires Yaniko and dispatched beastfolk assistants to assist with manuscript production. A former high school volleyball player, Saori retains physical conditioning capable of knocking Yaniko unconscious with a single blow. Upon receiving royalties, Saori purchased a new minivan to transport her neighbors to Kyoto, but overturned the vehicle in a wreck after learning on the return journey that her serialization had been canceled.

Nazuna Kujou, known as Penpenneko, is a homeless beastfolk woman who lived in a tent beside the Nyagami River. She presents herself as a recluse at one with nature and speaks in an aloof, philosophical manner, but in private she is timid, emotional and fairly worldly. After a river flood washes away her tent, she establishes an unauthorized campsite in the yard of Corpo Otani. In reality, Nazuna is the runaway daughter of Mizuna Kujou, the head of the wealthy Kujou industrial conglomerate. Her family sends her 1,000,000 yen every day, and she picks the locks of residents' rooms while they are out, or while Aruko naps, to take baths and go through their refrigerators.

Later additions to the apartment complex include Fumi Koide, Hikiko Hikita, and Kaede Igarashi. Fumi Koide, known as Debuneko, moved in from the countryside and is the building's first underage tenant; she has an unusual appetite and great physical strength, and was in the sumo club as a student. When she stepped in to stop a fight between Shunran and Hameko, her pressure left both fearing for their lives, and they now act friendly in front of her. Hikiko Hikita, nicknamed Hikineko, is a 26-year-old shut-in and a relative of Otani; family discord led her to become absorbed in the internet and her parents later divorced, and she came to Otani through her father's side of the family to overcome her reclusiveness.

Supporting characters include Yomuko, an aspiring writer who is Imoko's classmate. Yomuko visits Yaniko to ask for advice on her novel and asks Saori for advice on time management, but Saori notices she spends her time browsing 'Nyax'. Kazushi, the chief editor of Nyan Magazine, survives a shooting by a rival gangster family because he had hidden an issue of Afternyan with a Land of the Lustrous special insert under his robe. Other characters include Chief Lani, who runs the Tobacco Village, home of the Alpha, an ancient beastfolk tribe living in the mountains, and Ruko Ouji, Imoko's classmate, who wants to get closer to her.

Manga publication and collaborations

Written and illustrated by NyanNyanFactory, Chainsmoker Cat began weekly serialization in Weekly Young Magazine on February 20, 2023.[1][2] Kodansha collects the individual chapters into tankōbon volumes under the Young Magazine KC Special imprint.[13] The first tankōbon volume was released in Japan on August 4, 2023.[14][15] In North America, Seven Seas Entertainment licensed the manga for English-language publication in February 2025, releasing the initial volume on December 9, 2025.[16][17] In Taiwan, the Traditional Chinese edition is licensed and released by Sharp Point Press.[16][18]

The manga has engaged in several high-profile promotional collaborations with other manga series, media personalities, and transit operators.[19][20][21][22] The seventh volume of the manga, released on February 6, 2025, included a special guest chapter entitled 'Short Life' ('Tanmei'), based on the classical rakugo narrative of the same name.[19] The chapter was conceived by virtual YouTuber Raden Juufuutei of Hololive Production's ReGLOSS group and illustrated by NyanNyanFactory, following an earlier anniversary illustration in Weekly Young Magazine depicting Yaniko smoking alongside Raden.[19] In April 2025, a crossover campaign was launched with Kamome Maruyono's gourmet comedy manga Doka-gui Daisuki! Mochizuki-san; Maruyono contributed a special crossover one-shot published in Weekly Young Magazine issue 22/23 on April 28, 2025, and included at the conclusion of volume eight of Chainsmoker Cat.[20] NyanNyanFactory drew a corresponding crossover chapter published in Hakusensha's Young Animal ZERO magazine on May 9, 2025, supported by a promotional video narrated by Shigeru Chiba on YouTube.[23] In May 2026, Weekly Young Magazine published a collaborative visual uniting Chainsmoker Cat with Tsubasa Yamaguchi's Blue Period and Heisei Haizanhei Sumire-chan, a project initiated after Yamaguchi expressed enthusiasm for the series.[21] In July 2026, the transit company Odakyu Bus introduced a promotional wrapped transit bus decorated with Chainsmoker Cat character illustrations operating within its Kichijoji service division.[22]

Anime adaptation and episodes

An anime television series adaptation was announced on February 2, 2026.[3][4] The series was produced by Bibury Animation Studios and directed by Taku Kimura, with series scripts written by Takashi Aoshima, character designs by Riki Matsuura, and music composed by Keiichi Suzuki.[3][24] The anime premiered in Japan on July 3, 2026, broadcasting on Tokyo MX and BS11.[3][24] Two distinct versions of the anime were created: a sanitized 'On-Air' broadcast edition tailored for terrestrial television networks, and an uncensored 'Evil Dragon Unleashed' (Jaryū Kaihō) edition respecting the director's visual intent, which premiered on the premium television network AT-X on July 26, 2026.[25][26] Streaming services offering the uncensored edition in Japan include Netflix, Hulu, DMM TV, FOD, Anime Times, and AnimeFesta, the latter two of which provide both editions.[25]

The opening theme song is 'Nanmonee' ('Nothing at All'), composed and performed by rock band Wasureranneyo, while the ending theme song is 'Kemuri to Blue' ('Smoke and Blue'), composed and performed by Necry Talkie.[27][28] For episode 11, the two bands swapped themes, with Necry Talkie covering the opening theme featuring lyrical bleeps and on-screen eye bars over Yaniko, and Wasureranneyo performing the ending theme.[28][29][30] During voice recording, lead voice actress Yūko Natsuyoshi prepared for her role by purchasing Wakaba cigarettes to simulate unlit smoking during the pilot episode, while Misato Matsuoka researched tobacco culture to portray Yakuko.[31][32] The anime opening animation sequence received widespread attention for embedding over 50 cinematic homages to live-action Hollywood films, including Pulp Fiction and The Lord of the Rings.[33][34]

International distribution was managed by Netflix, which commenced streaming outside Japan on July 2, 2026, accompanied by localized dubs in English, Latin American Spanish, Castilian Spanish, Italian, German, and Thai.[35][36] Medialink licensed the anime across the Asia-Pacific region, initially streaming episodes on its Ani-One Asia YouTube platform, while OceanVeil distributed the uncensored edition online.[37][38][39]

Episode one, 'I'm a Chainsmoker, Nya', introduces Yaniko's squalid routine, her accidental spills of tar juice on Otani, her disastrous part-time job dismissals, and an emergency visit from Imoko dressed in a hazmat suit after Yaniko collapses from hypothermia.[40] Episode two, 'Meet My Juniors, Nya', depicts Yaniko suffering nicotine hallucinations of a dancing cigarette fairy, encountering Yakuko injecting unknown narcotics in her room, and Hameko's origin of receiving her surname 'Easygoing Anal Angel' following an error at city hall.[40] Episode three, 'I'm More of a Straight Man Than a Funny Man, Nya', includes Otani, embarrassed at being interrupted from his session with a sex doll, refusing to tell Yaniko the source of the noises she hears, Kaoruko broadcasting a fart Yaniko lets out inside a broadcast van, and Yaniko getting stuck halfway through a wall trying to reach a dropped cigarette. Episode four, 'Everyone Around Me Are Weirdos, Nya', covers Yaniko modeling in public for Saori's erotic manga, an assassination attempt against Nyan Magazine editor Kazushi, and the suspension of Hameko's livestream channel.

Episode five, 'We're Going to a Remote Place, Nya', features Yakuko, Yaniko and Hameko visiting the Tobacco Village, home of the Alpha beastfolk tribe run by Chief Lani, where Yaniko insults Lani's tribal tattoos and Lani makes the trio jump off their tower while hanging by a vine. Episode six, 'My Summer Begins And Ends, Nya', follows Aruko wandering off drunk and taking a cab to Enoshima, a lit cigarette setting Aruko's alcohol-soaked hair on fire, and Nazuna sheltering from a storm in Yaniko's room until she sees that her tent and belongings have been swept away in the Nyagami River. Episode seven, 'I, Too, Was Born to Parents, Nya', portrays Yaniko accidentally summoning the Nicotine Demon, an industrial explosion at a pipe cleaning factory, and Shizue concealing her smoking during a family cinema outing. Episode eight, 'Even We Run Around in December, Nya', centers on Yaniko celebrating her birthday alone because no one remembered to invite her to her surprise party, the introduction of Kaoruko's younger brother Shunran, and Otani getting stuck in a time loop during a New Year's mochi-pounding gathering that ends with his arrest for indecent exposure.

A special program, 'Kyō Dake Kireina Yani Neko Tokuban', aired on August 28, 2026; hosted by Yūko Natsuyoshi, Tetsu Inada, and Tenshin Hantaro, it gave a recap and some behind-the-scenes stories. Episode nine, 'My Little Sister is Popular, Nya', includes Imoko's classmate Ruko trying to get closer to her, Yaniko setting off the sprinkler system in a public bathroom, and Yakuko testing a hypnosis app on Yaniko to stop her smoking, which works too well. Episode ten, 'I'm Gonna Enjoy the Event Too, Nya', follows Yakuko and Hameko's drive to the Suisha Waterfall, during which Yakuko accidentally speeds off without Hameko and Hameko goes hitchhiking, Otani mistaking a bag of dog poop for Valentine's Day chocolate, and Saori dressing up in a lewd magical girl outfit. Episode eleven, 'We're in Kyōto, Nya', follows Saori taking the other apartment residents to Kyoto and Nara Park, where Yaniko meets an intelligent sika deer, and Saori flipping the car on the drive home after learning that her manga has been canceled. The broadcast concluded with episode twelve, 'Even in the Final Episode I'm Still Smoking, Nya', airing on September 25, 2026.

Reception and regulatory issues

Chainsmoker Cat achieved positive commercial rankings in domestic Japanese industry polls. The manga secured 12th place in the print category of the ninth Next Manga Awards in 2023, followed by a 13th-place finish in the 2024 edition.[41][42] The series placed 18th in Takarajimasha's Kono Manga ga Sugoi! guide rankings for male readers in 2024.[43] Prominent figures in the Japanese creative industry commended the anime adaptation on social media; animation director Makoto Shinkai described the anime as remarkably entertaining, while director Tsutomu Mizushima expressed admiration for its production aesthetic.[44][45] Mystery novelist Yukito Ayatsuji praised the high artistic animation quality and character design, noting that he recommended the series to fellow author Natsuhiko Kyogoku.[44] Writing for Asahi Shimbun, critic Atsushi Ohara commented that against the repulsive backdrop of municipal waste and bodily filth, Yaniko's moments of smoking provide an intense sense of psychological liberation.[46] Japanese physician and manga artist Tamotsu Ibaraki published a formal medical analysis evaluating Yaniko's addiction, concluding that her depicted lifestyle of severe chain-smoking, poor diet, and alcohol abuse would medically reduce life expectancy by an average of ten years, requiring immediate clinical intervention.[47][48]

Western critical reception was polarized regarding the dark tone and explicit content.[49] Erica Friedman of Anime News Network awarded the manga a score of 3 out of 5 stars, describing Yaniko as lazy, foolish, and repulsive with no redeeming arc, but noted that the narrative serves as an effective, perverse moral reassurance that makes readers feel better about their own lives.[49] Conversely, Kevin Cormack of Anime News Network awarded the series 1.5 out of 5 stars, heavily criticizing the messy visual line art and expressing that the unappealing character behaviors made emotional investment virtually impossible.[49] Reviewing for Russian media outlet 2x2, Alina Kuvshinnikova characterized the anime as uncompromised black humor that intentionally evokes physical revulsion through grotesque scenarios rather than moral subtext.[50] Online commentators on forums like Reddit debated whether the graphic depictions of nicotine withdrawal functioned as an effective anti-smoking deterrent.[51]

The anime encountered formal regulatory scrutiny regarding substance abuse portrayals in multiple territories.[9][52][53] In July 2026, the Youth Committee of Japan's Broadcasting Ethics and Program Improvement Organization (BPO) formally discussed viewer complaints regarding repetitive depictions of cigarette smoking and suspected illegal drug usage, such as self-injection scenes.[53][54] While concluding that the production fell within protected constitutional freedom of expression and required no disciplinary action, committee members advised caution when animating misleading drug imagery during periods of heightened public concern over illegal narcotics.[53]

In August 2026, the anime was removed from some streaming platforms in Hong Kong and Taiwan over alleged breaches of local laws on tobacco advertising.[9][52][55][56] On August 17, 2026, Hong Kong's Department of Health issued a formal warning that the anime breached sections 13B and 14 of the Smoking (Public Health) Ordinance, which strictly prohibits online advertising of smoking products.[55] Officials cited repeated, high-definition depictions of commercial cigarette packaging and recognizable brand trademarks, including Mevius.[52][55] In response, Taiwanese streaming distributor Bahamut Animation Crazy suspended broadcasts of the anime in Hong Kong and processed viewer subscription refunds.[52][55] Medialink removed the series from its regional Ani-One Asia YouTube channels, deleting all promotional references from its corporate website, whereas global overseas rights holder Netflix maintained uninterrupted streaming availability in the territory.[39][57][58]

On August 20, 2026, public health advocacy group Tung Foundation filed a formal regulatory complaint in Taiwan alleging that the anime violated Article 12 of Taiwan's Tobacco Hazards Prevention Act.[9][56] The Health Promotion Administration referred the case to municipal health bureaus, warning that commercial platforms risked administrative fines up to 1,000,000 New Taiwan dollars for promoting tobacco imagery to minors.[56] Multiple Taiwanese streaming platforms delisted the anime.[9][59] The delisting sparked backlash among Taiwanese anime fans, who compared the Tung Foundation to the vigilante anti-smoking NNN Group depicted in the anime.[9] On August 21, 2026, Minister of Health and Welfare Shih Chung-liang clarified that platforms could legally reinstate the anime provided that tobacco brand logos are blurred or desensitized and prominent mandatory health warnings regarding smoking hazards are inserted into the video frames.[60][61]
