Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation is a Japanese light novel series written by Rifujin na Magonote and illustrated by Shirotaka.[1] It follows a 34-year-old unemployed recluse who dies saving teenagers from a speeding truck and reincarnates as Rudeus Greyrat in a fantasy world of magic and swordplay.[2][3] The story originated as a web novel on Shōsetsuka ni Narō in November 2012, before receiving print publication under Media Factory's MF Books imprint, multiple manga adaptations, and an anime television series produced by Studio Bind.[4][5][6]

Plot

A 34-year-old unemployed Japanese man is thrown out of his home by his siblings after he fails to attend his parents' funeral.[7] Soon afterwards, he sees three high school students about to be hit by a truck.[7] He dies in the accident while trying to save them.[7]

He awakens as an infant named Rudeus Greyrat, born into an impoverished lower-noble household in Buena Village within the Asura Kingdom.[3] Retaining his adult memories and intellectual capacity, he discards his former identity and resolves to live seriously without regrets.[7] Combining early self-study with a genetic trait known as the Laplace Factor, Rudeus achieves extraordinary magical prowess, mastering chantless casting at three years of age.[8][9]

Childhood Arc

Roxy Migurdia, who was born in a Migurd tribe settlement on the Demon Continent, is hired by the Greyrat family as Rudeus's tutor.[10][11] His father, Paul Greyrat, teaches him swordsmanship. Rudeus has a trauma that keeps him from going outside; in his previous life, bullying in high school had led him to shut himself away until the age of 34.[3][7][12] During his graduation examination, Roxy takes Rudeus through the village on horseback. Seeing how warmly the villagers treat Roxy despite lingering prejudice against demons, Rudeus overcomes his psychological trauma, successfully passes the trial by conjuring a massive storm, and bids farewell to Roxy as she leaves to continue her travels.[13]

Rudeus subsequently rescues Sylphiette, a bullied quarter-elf girl with green hair, and befriends her, teaching her magic and chantless incantation.[14] Domestic tension emerges when the family maid, Lilia, becomes pregnant from an affair with Paul, but Rudeus intervenes to reconcile his parents, allowing Lilia to remain as a second wife.[15][16] Zenith was pregnant with Rudeus's younger sister Norn at the time of the affair, and Aisha is the half-sister of Rudeus and Norn.[16][17] Seeking further education, Rudeus asks Paul to fund his and Sylphiette's tuition at Ranoa Magic University. Worried that the two children are becoming co-dependent, their parents separate them, and Rudeus leaves the village to work as a tutor.[9] Rudeus is escorted to Roa by Ghislaine Dedoldia, a beast-tribe sword master.

Boyhood Arc

In Roa, Rudeus tutors Eris Boreas Greyrat, the volatile, violent heiress of the Boreas noble branch.[18] Despite initial clashes, Rudeus earns her respect after orchestrating an escape from a staged kidnapping plot that turns into an authentic abduction, teaching her arithmetic, literacy, and magic while training under Ghislaine. Following his tenth birthday, a massive magical anomaly known as the Fittoa Domain Teleportation Incident consumes the region in light, scattering thousands of inhabitants across the globe.[19]

Rudeus and Eris are sent to the Demon Continent.[20] In a dream, a mysterious entity calling himself Hitogami (the Human God) advises Rudeus to trust the first warrior he encounters upon waking. That warrior is Ruijerd Superdia, a veteran of the feared Superd race.[21] The three form an adventurer party named Dead End, aiming to escort Eris home to Asura while working to clear the vilified reputation of the Superd clan.[21] Simultaneously, Roxy learns of the disaster and searches the Demon Continent alongside Paul's former adventurer comrades, Elinalise Dragonroad and Talhand.[22][23]

Over three years, Dead End makes its way to the Fittoa region, and the thief Geese Nukadia travels with them as far as the Holy Country of Millis.[24][25] Prince Zanoba Shirone rescues Rudeus from his brother Pax, who had imprisoned him when he came to free Lilia and Aisha..[26] Near the Red Dragon's Lower Jaw, they cross paths with Orsted, the Dragon God and second of the Seven Great Powers.[20][27] Orsted nearly kills Rudeus, but Nanahoshi Shizuka, sensing that Rudeus is from another world, persuades Orsted to bring him back to life.[28] Reaching the devastated Fittoa territory, Rudeus and Eris discover that her parents and grandfather were killed.[20] Concluding that her weakness made her an unbearable burden during the ordeal with Orsted, Eris departs without explanation to train at the Holy Land of the Sword.[20] Misinterpreting her departure as total romantic rejection, Rudeus sinks into severe depression and develops psychogenic erectile dysfunction.[29]

Adolescence Arc

For two years, Rudeus roams the northern Central Continent as an adventurer known as 'Rudeus of the Quagmire' while searching for his missing mother Zenith.[30] Roxy and Talhand join Paul in the Holy Country of Millis and head for the Begaritt continent, where Zenith is, while Elinalise heads to Rudeus in the northern Central Continent.[23] Rudeus enrolls at Ranoa Magic University after receiving a letter of recommendation, at the urging of Elinalise, who does not want to meet Paul.[30]

At Ranoa, Rudeus befriends Princess Ariel Anemoi Asura and her male-disguised guardian Silent Fitz, who is secretly Sylphiette with hair turned white from mana exhaustion.[31] He also reunites with Zanoba, defeats the beast-tribe girls Linia and Pursena, who afterwards call him 'Boss', beats the demon king BadiGadi in a duel, and agrees to work with Nanahoshi, a Japanese high school girl summoned from modern Japan.[28][32] After Sylphiette reveals her identity, she cures his condition, and the two marry and purchase a home in Sharia. Rudeus is soon rejoined by his younger sisters Norn and Aisha.[33]

A distress call arrives from Begaritt reporting that Zenith's rescue has stalled. Rudeus and Elinalise travel to the labyrinth city to help Paul's party, against Hitogami's advice.[34] They rescue Roxy and reach the bottom floor to find Zenith sealed in a massive magic crystal, guarded by a Manatite Hydra.[34] Near the end of the battle with the Manatite Hydra, Paul pushes Rudeus out of the way of the creature's last attack and is killed.. Paralyzed by grief, Rudeus is consoled by Roxy. With Sylphiette's consent, Rudeus takes Roxy as his second wife, shortly before Sylphiette gives birth to his first child, Lucy.

Young Adult Arc

Hitogami appears in Rudeus's dream and asks him to check his basement. This time Rudeus decides to trust him..[35] On the way to the basement, Rudeus meets an old man in a worn robe who calls him by his previous-life name and introduces himself as Rudeus from the future.. The old man tells him never to trust Hitogami and names three things to do at once: consult Nanahoshi, send a letter to Eris, and doubt Hitogami without making an enemy of him.[35][36] The elder provides his diary containing decades of technical and historical notes, urging Rudeus to reconcile with Eris and beware Hitogami's malice.[35]

Hitogami confirms his hostile motives, confessing that a future union between Rudeus's and Roxy's descendants is destined to ally with Orsted and permanently seal him. Hitogami coerces Rudeus to attack Orsted under threat to his family. Utilizing custom-built Magic Armor, Rudeus ambushes Orsted but is thoroughly outmatched. Eris, having earned the rank of Sword King, intervenes to protect him.[37] Orsted is in some cases willing to bring Hitogami's apostles onto his side..[38]

Rudeus and his three wives come to fight on Orsted's side.. Over decades, he counters Hitogami's hidden apostles, secures political stability across the Asura Kingdom, develops magical tools, and raises his large extended family. The story's last turning point is the final battle between Orsted's forces and Hitogami's forces.[39][40] It is called the Biheiril campaign..[40] Rudeus lives the remainder of his life in peace, dying surrounded by his wives and descendants at the age of 74.[29]

Characters

The characters of Mushoku Tensei range across various humanoid, beast, and demonic races, organized through dynastic houses, adventurer ranks, and legendary martial titles.[41] Voice actors listed correspond to the anime series unless otherwise noted.[42][43][44]

Main Characters

Rudeus Greyrat, voiced by Yumi Uchiyama and, for his previous life, by Tomokazu Sugita (and by Hiro Shimono in the drama CD), is the protagonist.[42][43][45] Nicknamed Rudy, his personal motto is 'Do not get carried away, do not blame others, and work hard'.[46][47] Having lived as an isolated social pariah for twenty years following high school abuse, he consciously cultivates humility, empathy, and diligence in his second life, though comedic perversions and social clumsiness occasionally resurface.[48][49] Due to early training and his inherited Laplace Factor, Rudeus possesses a very large mana pool.[8] He casts attack magic chantlessly at Emperor-tier destructive output, but because his human body cannot channel his total reservoir into single world-altering spells, he specializes in high-velocity Stone Cannon projectiles and Quagmire mud spells.[30][50] His martial sword talent is hindered because he cannot naturally cloak his body in battle aura, but he compensates with close-range spell adjustments, an artificial Left Hand of Zaliff, custom Magic Armor suits, and a Demon Eye of Foresight granted by Empress Kishirika that glimpses several seconds into the immediate future.[30][51] He wields the staff Aqua Heartia, fashioned from elder trent wood and an ocean dragon stone.[52]

Sylphiette Greyrat, voiced by Ai Kayano, is Rudeus's childhood friend from Buena Village.[43] She is of mixed heritage, carrying one-half human, one-quarter elf, and one-quarter beast blood.[53] Possessing a mild, loyal, and devoted demeanor, she was bullied for her emerald-green hair, a color associated with the demon Superd tribe.[14] Under Rudeus's instruction, she mastered chantless casting and can cast healing magic chantlessly, which Rudeus cannot do.[31] During the Fittoa teleportation incident, she was teleported into the sky above the Asura Kingdom.[54] She now had white hair and dressed as a man.[30] Taking the alias Silent Fitz, she acted as Ariel's bodyguard before reuniting with Rudeus at Ranoa Magic University.[30][31] She becomes his first wife, bearing their daughter Lucy and son Sieghart Saladin.

Roxy Migurdia, voiced by Konomi Kohara (and by Ryō Hirohashi in the drama CD), is a water-specialist mage of the Migurd demon tribe.[42] Despite appearing as a petite fourteen-year-old girl with braided blue hair, she is 37 years old upon her introduction and lives for over a century.[55] Incapable of utilizing her tribe's innate telepathy, she left her homeland out of feelings of isolation, graduating from Ranoa Magic University under Jenas Halphas before becoming a traveling tutor.[10][11] Roxy's compassionate instruction inadvertently cures Rudeus's fear of the outside world, earning her profound reverence from him.[12] Adept at abbreviated incantations, she specializes in Icicle Blizzard and the combined freeze spell Frost Nova.[56] She becomes Rudeus's second wife following the Begaritt labyrinth campaign and bears two daughters, Lara and Lily.

Eris Boreas Greyrat, voiced by Ai Kakuma, is a noblewoman of the Asura Kingdom's Boreas lineage.[43] Known as the 'Mad Dog' for her feral temper, physical violence, and refusal to conform to aristocratic decorum, she exhibits exceptional natural aptitude for the aggressive Sword God style of swordsmanship.[18][57] Her father Philip had Ghislaine teach her swordsmanship in the Sword God style.[18] Deeply attached to Rudeus, she feels humiliated by her inability to assist him against Orsted and vows to achieve true equality.[20] She studies at the Holy Land of the Sword under Gal Farion, Auber Corbett, and Reida Reia, mastering Sword King and North Saint credentials.[37] She re-emerges to save Rudeus from Orsted, wielding the Phoenix Elegant Dragon Sword, a blade capable of ignoring battle aura defenses.[38] She becomes Rudeus's third wife, bearing their son Ars and daughter Christina.

Greyrat Family

Paul Greyrat, voiced by Toshiyuki Morikawa (and by Eiji Takemoto in the drama CD), is Rudeus's father and a resident knight in Buena Village.[6][42] Originally the eldest son of the high-ranking Notos Greyrat house, he fled his strict home at twelve to become an adventurer.[18] Highly versatile, Paul achieved advanced-tier competency in all three major swordsmanship disciplines: the Sword God, Water God, and North God styles.[58] Despite his charisma and leadership, he exhibits significant character flaws, including impulsive drinking and infidelity.[15][59] Following the Fittoa disaster, he founded the Fittoa Domain Search Party in Millis.[59] He perishes inside the Begaritt Teleportation Labyrinth defending Rudeus from the Manatite Hydra.

Zenith Greyrat, voiced by Hisako Kanemoto, is Rudeus's mother and Paul's first wife.[6] The runaway second daughter of the aristocratic Latreia noble family from the Holy Country of Millis, she joined the Fang of the Black Wolf adventurer party as an intermediate healing and detoxification practitioner.[16] Bright, sociable, and open-minded, she accepted Roxy and Lilia into her home.[12][60] Trapped inside a mana crystal inside the Begaritt labyrinth for years, she is rescued in an unresponsive, telepathically dreamlike state.

Lilia Greyrat, voiced by Lynn, is the Greyrat family maid and Paul's second wife.[6] A former imperial palace guard in Asura who retired following a disabling leg injury, she conceived Aisha through an affair with Paul.[15][58] She came to respect Rudeus after he helped her when she became pregnant through her affair with Paul.[15] Norn Greyrat, voiced by Saya Aizawa, is Zenith's daughter, characterized by blonde hair and average abilities, who struggled with deep inferiority complexes toward her gifted siblings before maturing into an empathetic student leader.[61][62] Aisha Greyrat, voiced by Yūki Takada, is Lilia's daughter, an intellectual and organizational prodigy who manages household affairs and later oversees the Rudo Mercenary Company.[17]

Leo is a sacred silver-furred beast resembling a massive two-meter dog, revered as a divine guardian by the beast tribes, who bonds with the Greyrat household after being rescued from smugglers.[63] Rudeus's six children across his three wives comprise Lucy and Sieghart Saladin (with Sylphiette), Lara and Lily (with Roxy), and Ars and Christina (with Eris). Lara is identified by beast prophecies as the destined savior of the world.

Ranoa Magic University

Ranoa Magic University enrolls exceptional figures as 'Special Students,' granting tuition exemptions and campus autonomy to bolster the institution's political prestige. Zanoba Shirone, voiced by Satoshi Tsuruoka, is the third prince of the Shirone Kingdom and a 'Child of God' (Miko) born with monstrous physical strength and invulnerability, though incapable of regulating his power in his youth.[26] Obsessed with statuettes, he apprenticed under Rudeus, purchased the young dwarf slave Juliette to sculpt on his behalf, and collaborated with Cliff to engineer the Zaliff prosthetic limbs and Magic Armor.[26][64]

Cliff Grimoire is voiced by Ryōta Ōsaka. A prodigy capable of casting seven of the eight recognized magic schools at advanced levels, he specializes in curse research and artifact development to mitigate the curse affecting Elinalise, whom he passionately courts and marries.[65] Linia Dedoldia, voiced by Fairouz Ai, and Pursena Adoldia, voiced by Minami Tanaka, are beast-tribe delinquent leaders from the Doldia chieftain lines who become Rudeus's devoted underlings after he disciplines them for vandalizing his hand-carved Roxy statuette.[32][66]

Nanahoshi Shizuka, voiced by Shion Wakayama, is an un-reincarnated Japanese high school student transported bodily to the Six-Sided World during the Fittoa disaster.[28][63] Discovered by Orsted, she does not age, possesses zero internal mana, and conducts research on dimensional summoning circles under the pseudonym Silent Sevenstar in a relentless pursuit to return home.[28] BadiGadi, voiced by Taiten Kusunoki, is the six-armed, dark-skinned Immortal Demon King of the Biegoya region who enrolls as a student after Rudeus blasts his upper torso to fragments in a campus duel.[67]

General students include Princess Ariel Anemoi Asura, voiced by Reina Ueda, a charismatic claimant to the Asura throne who seeks foreign allies to counteract court assassination plots.[68][69] Luke Notos Greyrat, voiced by Kazuyuki Okitsu, is a womanizer with a careless character.[66][70] Roxy studied under Jenas Halphas at Ranoa Magic University.[11]

Adventurers

Ruijerd Superdia is voiced by Daisuke Namikawa. Ruijerd is a 500-year-old warrior of the demon Superd tribe whose red gemstone on his forehead detects surrounding mana flows.[71] Formerly the captain of Demon God Laplace's elite guards, he broke free of Laplace's cursed tridents after his own son shattered his spear.[72] To restore his vilified tribe's reputation, Ruijerd assists distressed children while traversing the globe.[22][73]

The Fang of the Black Wolf was an S-rank party led by Paul prior to his marriage to Zenith.[22] Its roster included Ghislaine Dedoldia, voiced by Megumi Toyoguchi, a muscular beast swordswoman bearing the title Sword King who serves as Eris's bodyguard and bodyguard instructor; Elinalise Dragonroad, voiced by Rie Tanaka, an elven warrior afflicted with a labyrinthine curse requiring regular sexual intake to discharge accumulating mana into gemstones; Talhand, voiced by Hōchū Ōtsuka, a heavy-armored dwarf earth-mage; and Geese Nukadia, voiced by Yōji Ueda, the sole survivor of the ape-like Nuka demon tribe who excels in covert fieldcraft, cooking, lockpicking, and reconnaissance despite lacking any combat ability.[41][74][75][76][77][78]

Other adventurer parties featured across the narrative include Counter Arrow, an escort squad active in the northern territories comprising the archer Sara, leader Timothy, front-liner Suzanne, wind warrior Patrice, and healer Mimir; Stepped Leader, an elite labyrinth party led by the swordsman Zoldat Heckler; the Tokurabu Village Gang, led by the demon youth Kurt;.[79][80]

The Seven Great Powers

The Seven Great Powers are the seven strongest martial combatants in the Six-Sided World, established by Technique God Laplace following the Second Human-Demon War.[77] A stone monument made by Technique God Laplace shows the current Seven Great Powers; its crests change when the ranking changes, although the monument itself appears to have no means of rewriting them.[77][81] Combatants ranked fourth and above represent monstrous entities beyond mortal thresholds, possessing insurmountable disparities in power compared to ranks five through seven.[77]

First Rank is Technique God Laplace, the missing Dragon King who separated from his demonic half and preserved martial knowledge to defeat Hitogami.[82] Second Rank is Dragon God Orsted, voiced by Kenjiro Tsuda, the current hundredth-generation Dragon God.[83] A curse that makes every living creature shun him causes Orsted always to appear to others as a menacing symbol of fear.[20][83] Third Rank is Fighting God (Tōshin), represented by the sentient golden Fighting God Armor forged by Laplace.[84] Fourth Rank is Demon God Laplace, the demonic incarnation who united the Demon Continent and initiated the Laplace War against humanity.[41][82]

The lower ranks comprise Fifth Rank Death God Randolph Marianne, a former cook and royal knight in the King Dragon Kingdom who utilizes the Phantom Sword technique; Sixth Rank Sword God Gal Farion, voiced by Tōru Inada, the pragmatic sovereign of the Holy Land of the Sword; and Seventh Rank North God Alexander Kalman Ryback (Kalman III), an ambitious youth who wields the gravity-manipulating Dragon King Sword Kajakut.[52][85][86][87][88]

Other Factions and Figures

Hitogami, voiced by Kujira, is a manipulative entity residing in the central Void World who projects himself into the dreams of inhabitants, relying on a hypnotic curse of innate trustworthiness to orchestrate downstream events.[58][61] Perugius Dola, voiced by Rikiya Koyama, is the Armored Dragon King and one of the Three Heroes of Demon Slaying who rules the sky from the Floating Fortress Chaos Breaker alongside twelve spirit familiars including Sylvaril and Arumanfi.[89][90]

Kishirika Kishiris, voiced by Yuka Iguchi, is the ancient Demon Great Emperor known for bestowing various Demon Eyes upon those who provide her food.[51][89] Queen Atoferatofe Ryback, voiced by Nanako Mori, rules the Gaslow region of the Demon Continent as an aggressive, immortal demon queen supported by her chief advisor Moore.[91][92] In the Holy Country of Millis, Pope Harry Grimoire and Cardinal Reblanc MacFarlane lead opposing factions concerning demon integration, while the Memory Child of God is guarded by the elite Anastasia Keep.[93][94]

World and Setting

The setting of Mushoku Tensei is the Six-Sided World (Rokumen Sekai), an interconnected dimensional structure created by an ancient creation deity.[95] The world maintains an internal energy equilibrium where total mana volume is conserved, prompting spatial adjustments when localized imbalances occur.[96]

Cosmology and History

Historically, the cosmos consisted of six separate planar facets: the Human World, Demon World, Dragon World, Beast World, Sea World, and Sky World, centered around an empty expanse called the Void World.[95] Following ancient catastrophes incited by Hitogami, five of the worlds collapsed, and their surviving ecosystems and populations consolidated onto the Human World.[41] Dates are reckoned using the Armored Dragon Calendar (Kōryūreki), initiated following the sealing of Demon God Laplace.[41]

Three major intercontinental conflicts shaped history: the First Human-Demon War 6,000 to 7,000 years prior, ended by the hero Ars; the Second Human-Demon War 4,200 to 5,000 years prior, which severed the primordial supercontinent into distinct landmasses and created the inland Rings Sea; and the Laplace War 400 to 500 years prior, which decimated human kingdoms before the Three Heroes sealed Laplace.[41][97] In year 417 of the Armored Dragon Calendar, the Fittoa Teleportation Incident occurred when the fabric of space was stripped to siphon mana for Nanahoshi's cross-dimensional summoning.[19][96]

Continents and Nations

The Rings Sea is a circular sea surrounded by five continents; it formed when the Great Continent split into the Central Continent and the Demon Continent during the Second Human-Demon War.[41] The Central Continent is bifurcated by the impassable Red Dragon Mountain Range into northern, western, and southern zones.[41][98] The western expanse is dominated by the Asura Kingdom, the world's wealthiest superpower, divided into four cardinal provinces governed by the Notos, Boreas, Euros, and Zephyrus branches of the Greyrat family.[19][52] The northern zone contains the Magic Three Nations (the Ranoa Kingdom, Neris Principality, and Basherant Principality), whose collective capital of magical learning is centered in the academic metropolis of Sharia.[30][99][100]

The southern Central Continent encompasses the military powerhouse of the King Dragon Kingdom, the client realm of Shirone, and the volatile Conflict Zone, where small states continuously war through proxy funding.[17][101][102] The Demon Continent is a harsh, arid wasteland populated by high-ranking monsters and independent demon lords, containing the caldera town of Rikarisu and the fortified Necros Fortress.[23][103][104] The Millis Continent houses the theological Holy Country of Millis, based around the walled capital Millishion, and the vast Great Forest populated by beast-tribes, elves, and hobbits.[105][106][107] Begaritt is a perilous desert continent studded with labyrinths, anchored by the oasis city of Lapan, while the Sky Continent consists of precipitous 3,000-meter mesas inhabited by the winged Sky Race.[108][109]

Races

The world includes diverse demographic races. Humans form the majority population across the Central Continent and Millis.[41] Demons encompass diverse species that allied against humanity during ancient wars, including the petite, long-lived Migurd tribe; the emerald-haired, spear-wielding Superd; and the durable Immortal Demon clan capable of infinite flesh regeneration.[55][72][110] Beast tribes, primarily concentrated within the Great Forest, feature sharp sensory organs, vocal magic capabilities, and animal traits such as cat ears (Dedoldia) and dog ears (Adoldia).[32][105]

Author Rifujin na Magonote began submitting manuscripts to commercial publishers after graduating from university in 2007.[2] Following repeated rejections, he stepped away from writing until discovering Kanekiru Kogitsune's web serial Re:Monster on Shōsetsuka ni Narō.[2][119] Realizing that the web platform offered a welcoming environment for unconventional genre experiments, he began publishing Mushoku Tensei in November 2012.[2][119] Magonote took advantage of the website's immediate comment system, revising daily drafts in response to reader feedback while maintaining pre-written buffers.[120][121]

Rifujin na Magonote published the original web novel on Shōsetsuka ni Narō from November 22, 2012, to April 3, 2015.[4] In November 2013, Media Factory announced that the series would be published in print under its MF Books imprint, featuring character designs and illustrations by Pixiv artist Shirotaka.[1][5] The main light novel series spanned 26 volumes published between January 24, 2014, and November 25, 2022.[1] Volume 7 contains an original, newly written narrative arc chronicling Rudeus's years as a depressed teenage adventurer in the north that was not present in the original web serial.[1]

Anime Adaptation
