Scientology is a belief system and new religious movement established in the early 1950s by American author L. Ron Hubbard.[1][2][3] Originating from Hubbard's Dianetics mental therapy, it teaches that humans are immortal spiritual beings, termed thetans, trapped in the physical universe who can achieve spiritual rehabilitation through counseling known as auditing.[1][2][4] Administered primarily by the Church of Scientology, the movement has drawn sustained worldwide controversy, legal conflict, and governmental scrutiny over its financial demands, internal discipline, and aggressive responses to critics.[1][5][6]
Etymology and early usage
The word Scientology is a hybrid term coined by combining the Latin word scientia, meaning knowledge or skill, derived from the verb scire ('to know'), with the Greek suffix -logia, from logos, meaning word, speech, or reason.[7][8][9] L. Ron Hubbard defined the term as 'knowing about knowing' or 'the science of knowledge'.[10] Hubbard also defined Scientology as 'the study and handling of the spirit in relationship to itself, universes and other life'.[11][12] Critics and scholars note that incorporating the root for science aimed to borrow the prestige and perceived legitimacy of the natural sciences in the public mind, a process of self-scientification observed in other new religious movements such as Christian Science and Religious Science.[13][14]
Before Hubbard adopted the term, it had appeared in print on at least two earlier occasions.[15][16][17] In 1901, British author Allen Upward used the word 'Scientology' in his book The New Word as a disparaging term to describe an unthinking and blind adherence to scientific doctrine, akin to uncritical scientism.[15][17][18][19] In 1934, German-Argentine philosopher Anastasius Nordenholz published Scientologie: Wissenschaft von der Beschaffenheit und der Tauglichkeit des Wissens ('Scientology: Science of the Constitution and Usefulness of Knowledge'), using the word to designate a 'science of science'.[20][21][22][23] Although some critics have suggested Hubbard borrowed the term from Nordenholz, religious studies scholars Roy Wallis and Massimo Introvigne concluded that evidence of direct borrowing is lacking, noting that Hubbard stated in a 1955 bulletin that he could not read German.[21][24][25][26][27] Hubbard first used the term publicly in a lecture delivered on March 3, 1952.[28][29]
History
Scientology developed out of Dianetics, a mental therapy system launched in 1950 by pulp fiction and science-fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard.[1][2][3][30] In May 1950, Hubbard published Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health after introducing the concept in Astounding Science Fiction under editor John W. Campbell.[3][31][32] Dianetics claimed to identify the source of psychosomatic ailments and irrational behavior in subconscious recordings called engrams, proposing a counseling method called auditing to eliminate them and produce an optimum human state termed Clear.[33][34] The book became a New York Times bestseller for 28 weeks, prompting the rapid formation of Dianetics clubs and the establishment of the Hubbard Dianetic Research Foundation in Elizabeth, New Jersey.[35][36][37]
The initial Dianetics boom collapsed quickly amid internal disputes, financial debts, and regulatory challenges.[1][38][39] In January 1951, the New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners initiated proceedings against the Hubbard Dianetic Research Foundation for practicing medicine without a license.[40][41][42] The foundation went bankrupt in February 1952, and Hubbard temporarily lost the legal rights to Dianetics and its book titles to Don Purcell.[39][43][44] Hubbard then expanded his focus from mental therapy into the metaphysical nature of the human spirit, conceiving humans as immortal spiritual beings that inhabit successive bodies across lifetimes.[1][2][45][46] In 1952 he organized the Hubbard Association of Scientologists in Phoenix, Arizona, establishing a new applied religious philosophy.[46][47][48]
Founding and international expansion
In December 1953, Hubbard incorporated three religious entities in Camden, New Jersey: the Church of American Science, the Church of Scientology, and the Church of Spiritual Engineering.[49][50][51] On February 18, 1954, followers established the Church of Scientology of California in Los Angeles, which became the movement's first operational local church.[47][51][52] The Founding Church of Scientology opened in Washington, D.C., in 1955, with Hubbard serving as executive director.[33][53][54] Hubbard regained control of the Dianetics copyrights in 1954, integrating Dianetics and Scientology under church oversight.[39][55][56][57]
Scientology expanded rapidly across English-speaking countries, founding branches in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1954, followed by missions in the United Kingdom, South Africa, and Australia.[6][58][59] In 1959, Hubbard purchased Saint Hill Manor in East Grinstead, Sussex, England, which served as his personal home and the worldwide headquarters of Scientology throughout the 1960s.[1][60] There, Hubbard delivered the Saint Hill Special Briefing Course and developed the standardized training and management routines of the movement.[61]
During the mid-1960s, government inquiries in Several Commonwealth nations investigated Scientology's practices.[6][62][63] In Australia, the 1965 Anderson Report in Victoria described auditing as authoritarian hypnosis and condemned Scientology as medically, morally, and socially hazardous, leading to legislative bans in Victoria and other Australian states that forced the organization to operate temporarily under the name Church of the New Faith until the High Court overturned the restrictions in 1983.[63][64][65][66] In the United Kingdom, following critical reports, the government in 1968 barred foreign Scientologists from entering the country to study at Saint Hill Manor, prompting the Foster Report of 1971.[67][68][69][70] In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration raided the Founding Church in Washington on January 4, 1963, seizing hundreds of E-meters as unapproved medical devices, which resulted in a 1971 court order requiring disclaimer labels stating the device has no medical or scientific utility.[71][72][73][74][75]
Sea Org and the Guardian's Office
In 1966, Hubbard resigned his formal executive administrative titles in the Church of Scientology to focus on research and doctrine.[2][76] In 1967, he created the Sea Organization (Sea Org) as an elite fraternal management order staffed by his most dedicated followers.[62][77][78] Hubbard established the group aboard a private fleet of vessels, including the Royal Scotsman (later Apollo), the Athena, and the Diana, assuming the rank of Commodore.[79][80] Members of the Sea Org wore naval-style uniforms, operated under maritime hierarchy, and signed symbolic billion-year commitments pledging service across future incarnations.[1][81][82] In 1975, the Sea Org moved ashore, establishing permanent land-based international administrative headquarters in Clearwater, Florida, and Los Angeles, California.[83]
To defend the movement against external opposition and legal challenges, Hubbard created the Guardian's Office (GO) in 1966, headed by his wife, Mary Sue Hubbard.[1][6][62][84] During the 1970s, the Guardian's Office initiated covert intelligence operations, including Operation Snow White, a massive infiltration of government agencies such as the Internal Revenue Service, the Department of Justice, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation to purge unfavorable records.[1][6][85] The operation also encompassed Operation Freakout, a retaliatory conspiracy aimed at framing critical author Paulette Cooper to have her imprisoned or committed to a mental institution.[86][87] In July 1977, FBI agents raided Church offices in Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles, seizing thousands of covert documents.[6][88] In 1979, eleven senior officials, including Mary Sue Hubbard, were convicted in federal court for conspiracy, burglary of government offices, and obstruction of justice, receiving prison sentences.[1][88][89]
Reorganization and the Miscavige era
Following the criminal convictions, church leadership dismantled the Guardian's Office and established the Office of Special Affairs (OSA) in 1982 to handle external and legal affairs under corporate constraints.[90][91][92] Concurrently, young Sea Org executive David Miscavige, formerly Hubbard's close assistant, spearheaded a comprehensive corporate and doctrinal restructuring.[1][36][77][93] In 1981, the Church of Scientology International (CSI) was incorporated as the mother church to manage network operations, and in 1982, the Religious Technology Center (RTC) was created as the ultimate doctrinal authority holding Hubbard's trademarks and service marks.[2][77][94][95] This centralization precipitated an internal schism, leading to the expulsion or departure of several high-ranking figures who formed independent practice networks known collectively as the Free Zone.[77][96][97][98]
Hubbard died there on January 24, 1986, following a stroke.[53][99] Following his death, Miscavige emerged as the effective leader of the movement, assuming the formal title of Chairman of the Board of the Religious Technology Center.[1][100][101] Church officials announced Hubbard's death as his having voluntarily 'dropped his body' to continue spiritual research unencumbered by physical flesh on higher planes.[102][103][104]
Under Miscavige, the Church secured full tax-exempt religious recognition from the United States Internal Revenue Service in October 1993, ending a quarter-century tax dispute.[74][105][106][107] From the early 2000s onward, the organization launched large-scale real estate programs to replace existing facilities with 'Ideal Organizations' across the world, including the Flag Building ('Super Power Building') in Clearwater, Florida, which opened in 2013.[108][109] In 2013, the Church released the 'Golden Age of Tech Phase II', a sweeping program re-editing and republishing Hubbard's lecture series and auditing rundowns.[110]
Beliefs and worldview
Scientology teaches that the human being is composed of three distinct parts: the body, the mind, and the thetan.[103][111][112][113][114] The thetan, named after the Greek letter theta (θ) representing life energy or spirit, is the immortal spiritual individual itself, rather than an entity a person possesses.[7][113][115][116][117] Thetans have existed for quadrillions of years and have inhabited countless physical bodies across successive lifetimes through an assumption process comparable to reincarnation.[33][118][119][120][121] Death is viewed as a temporary event wherein the thetan drops the physical body and subsequently takes up another newly born human body.[103][104][122][123]
Scientology's cosmology posits two fundamental realms: the theta universe of spirit and life force, and the physical universe known by the acronym MEST, standing for Matter, Energy, Space, and Time.[1][33][112][113][124] According to Hubbard's 1953 work 'The Factors', the physical universe possesses no independent reality and was originally created by thetans for their creative amusement.[123][125] Over cosmic epochs, thetans became enticed by and entangled within their physical creation, falling into a state of spiritual amnesia where they forgot their immortality and identified entirely with mortal bodies.[1][2][113][125] A primary doctrinal goal is exteriorization, the verified state where the thetan consciously separates from the physical body and operates independently of it.[1][113][126][127][128]
Hubbard structured the mind into two primary functional components: the analytical mind and the reactive mind.[34][129][130] The analytical mind is the rational, conscious mechanism that perceives, evaluates data, and makes survival-oriented decisions.[34][130] The reactive mind is an irrational stimulus-response mechanism that records mental image pictures during moments of unconsciousness, physical trauma, or severe pain.[34][130][131] These recorded trauma units, termed engrams, remain latent until restimulated by sensory cues resembling the original incident, causing irrational emotional reactions, fears, and psychosomatic illnesses.[34][131][132] Dianetics and Scientology auditing are designed to erase engrams from the reactive mind and restore rationality.[1][129][131][133][134]
Human survival is conceptualized along eight dynamic urges, visualized as concentric expanding spheres: the First Dynamic is self-survival; the Second is creativity, sex, family, and child-rearing; the Third is group survival (clubs, communities, companies); the Fourth is the survival of the human species; the Fifth is all life forms (animals, plants); the Sixth is the physical universe of MEST; the Seventh is the spiritual dynamic of thetans; and the Eighth Dynamic is infinity, commonly associated with the Supreme Being or God.[135][136][137][138] Scientology defines goodness and ethics rationally rather than through conventional morality: an optimal solution to any problem is that which brings the greatest survival benefit to the greatest number of dynamics.[138][139][140][141]
Scientology does not maintain a dogmatic definition or creed of worship regarding God, focusing instead on the individual thetan's spiritual potential.[1][136][142] Hubbard asserted in Science of Survival that all enduring civilizations have acknowledged a Supreme Being and that lack of spiritual belief diminishes human ethical capacity.[143][144] In Scientology's worldview, the Supreme Being is only comprehended when an individual progresses through the first seven dynamics to attain awareness at the Eighth Dynamic.[135][144]
Triangles and symbology
Scientology utilizes two conceptual geometric models known as the ARC and KRC triangles.[123][145][146] The ARC triangle consists of Affinity (emotional liking or affection), Reality (agreement on consensus reality), and Communication (the exchange of ideas).[123][147] Scientologists believe that improving any one of these vertices raises the other two, with Communication considered the preeminent controlling factor.[147][148] The KRC triangle consists of Knowledge, Responsibility, and Control, representing the capacities required to handle life.[149][150][151] The primary symbol of Scientology consists of the letter 'S' interwoven with the upper KRC triangle and the lower ARC triangle, symbolizing the expansion of knowledge, responsibility, and control through affinity, reality, and communication.[151][152][153]
The Scientology cross is an eight-pointed emblem introduced by Hubbard in the 1950s, representing the eight dynamics of survival.[154][155][156][157][158] While visually resembling Christian iconography, Church literature specifies that the horizontal bar represents the material universe and the vertical bar represents the spirit rising above it.[159] Scholar Hugh Urban noted that the cross's design shares visual affinities with the rose cross used by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, an organization familiar to occultist Aleister Crowley with whom Hubbard had associated in the 1940s.[160]
The Tone Scale is a numerical system designed to classify emotional states and predict human behavior, spanning from -40 ('Total Failure') to +40 ('Serenity of Being').[161] Key points on the scale include 0.05 (Apathy), 0.5 (Grief), 1.0 (Fear), 1.1 (Covert Hostility), 1.5 (Anger), 2.0 (Antagonism), 2.5 (Boredom), 3.0 (Conservatism), and 4.0 (Enthusiasm).[162] Critics of Scientology and people with 'sexual perversions', such as homosexuals, are classed at 1.1 on the scale, and Hubbard wrote in Science of Survival that in a thinking society no person below 2.0 would have any rights.[162]
Hubbard created an extensive technical vocabulary, colloquially known as Scientologese, comprising thousands of specialized definitions and neologisms.[1][163] The Church mandates the study of this terminology through Study Tech and 'Word Clearing', which dictates that a student must never pass a word that is not fully understood, utilizing specialized dictionaries and 'demo kits' composed of small physical objects to represent abstract concepts visually.[1][164][165]
Practices and spiritual path
The spiritual progression of a Scientologist is mapped on the Classification, Gradation and Awareness Chart, known as 'The Bridge to Total Freedom'.[137][166][167][168] First introduced in chart form in 1965, the Bridge delineates 52 awareness levels arranged vertically, with training courses on the left side and auditing processing steps on the right.[137][169][170] Moving up the Bridge requires sequential completion of introductory courses, Life Orientation, Purification Rundowns, and successive Auditing Grades (Grades 0 through IV), culminating in the major milestones of Clear and the Operating Thetan levels.[137][167][171][172][173]
Auditing (from the Latin audire, 'to listen') is the central spiritual practice of Scientology.[1][33][131][134][174] During an auditing session, a trained auditor asks structured questions to a participant, termed a preclear, directing their attention to traumatic incidents on their 'time track' to discharge emotional charge.[131][175][176] Auditing is conducted with an E-meter (electropsychometer), a device based on a Wheatstone bridge that passes a minute electrical current of approximately 1.5 volts through metal cylinders held in the preclear's hands to measure changes in skin resistance.[5][177][178][179][180] Hubbard asserted that the E-meter detects mental mass created by thought energy.[181] While the Church presents auditing as religious confession, courts and medical bodies have determined that the E-meter has no scientific or diagnostic utility.[71][73]
The state of Clear represents the elimination of the reactive mind and all its engrams.[129][131][137][173] A Clear is considered fully rational, unimpeded by psychosomatic aberrations, and possesses enhanced mental clarity and sensory perception.[129][131][137][173] Individuals who attain this milestone receive a certificate and Clear status; by 2018, Church records counted approximately 70,000 individuals who had reached Clear.[137][182]
Above Clear lie the Operating Thetan (OT) levels, designed to restore the thetan's inherent supernatural powers over matter, energy, space, and time.[1][128][137][183][184] Hubbard formulated fifteen OT levels, of which levels OT I through OT VIII have been released to date.[137][185][186] OT levels involve advanced solo-auditing, where the practitioner acts as their own auditor with the E-meter.[176] The advanced materials are treated as confidential trade secrets, accessible only after completing prerequisites and donating large fees.[1][187][188][189] OT VIII ('Truth Revealed'), the highest available level, is administered exclusively at sea aboard the Church's 440-foot motor vessel Freewinds.[186][190]
The confidential OT III level, known as 'The Wall of Fire', introduces Scientology's core space opera narrative.[191][192][193][194] According to Hubbard's hand-written texts, 75 million years ago Xenu (or Xemu), the ruler of the Galactic Confederacy comprising 76 planets and 26 stars, resolved acute overpopulation by transporting billions of beings to Earth (then called Teegeeack) in spacecraft resembling Douglas DC-8 airplanes.[191][193][195] The victims were placed around volcanoes across the globe, including Hawaii and Las Palmas, and annihilated with hydrogen bombs.[191][195] Their disembodied spirits, termed body thetans, were captured in electronic traps, subjected to 36 days of 3-D motion-picture implants, and subsequently adhered in clusters to surviving humans, causing physical and psychological suffering.[191][192][193] Advanced OT auditing involves locating and telepathically auditing these body thetans to discharge their trauma and separate them from the practitioner.[188][191]
Scientology observes seven major calendar events: L. Ron Hubbard's Birthday (March 13), Dianetics Day (May 9), Maiden Voyage of the Freewinds (June 6), Auditor's Day (second Sunday in September), International Association of Scientologists Anniversary (October 7), Publications Day (November 27), and New Year's Eve (December 31).[146][196] Local churches also hold weekly Sunday services open to the public, featuring sermons, collective auditing, and recitations of the Scientology Creed, as well as weddings, namings, and funerals conducted by ordained ministers.[146][196][197][198]
Ethics and internal justice
Scientology maintains an internal regulatory apparatus designated as the ethics and justice system.[199][200] Ethics is defined as personal self-regulation to advance survival across the eight dynamics, whereas justice comprises corrective group action imposed when an individual fails to maintain ethical conduct.[140][200] Each organization employs an Ethics Officer who monitors compliance and tracks performance through weekly production statistics ('stats').[200] The system incorporates formal disciplinary hearings, including Committees of Evidence, Boards of Investigation, sec checks (security checks involving interrogational auditing with the E-meter), and required written confessions of 'overts' (harmful acts) and 'withholds' (undisclosed transgressions).[200]
Individuals deemed hostile to Scientology or who impede its progress are declared Suppressive Persons (SPs).[199][201] Hubbard outlined twelve anti-social characteristics defining SPs, portraying them as destructive personalities responsible for social decay.[201][202] Members in association with an SP are labeled Potential Trouble Sources (PTS) and are barred from auditing and training until they resolve the connection.[203] Under the policy of disconnection, Scientologists are instructed to cut ties with any person declared an SP, a practice that can extend to parents, children, or spouses, and members have been pressured to cut ties with family members.[199][203][204][205]
In 1965, Hubbard promulgated the Fair Game policy, which decreed that declared suppressive persons 'may not be protected by the codes and disciplines or the rights of a Scientologist' and could be 'tricked, sued or lied to or destroyed'.[102][206][207][208][209] Although Hubbard issued a policy letter on October 21, 1968, ordering that the term 'Fair Game' no longer be used in ethics orders due to negative public relations, critics and former members argue that the underlying confrontational tactics continue under policies such as 'Attack the Attacker' and 'dead agenting', a procedure designed to discredit critics by aggressively spreading damaging allegations against them.[46][90][102][207][210]
Within the Sea Org, members accused of serious performance failures, low statistics, or ethical lapses are assigned to the Rehabilitation Project Force (RPF).[211][212] Described by the Church as a voluntary program of spiritual rehabilitation and study, former members describe it as a penal regimen involving heavy physical labor, running instead of walking, sleep deprivation, segregated communal living in basement quarters, and restricted communication.[102][211][213][214] Former executive Debbie Cook testified in court that she and dozens of executives were confined in a specialized detention facility known as 'The Hole' at Gold Base in California, enduring physical assaults, degradation rituals, and collective interrogations.[211][215] Former Sea Org members have also filed federal lawsuits alleging forced labor, human trafficking, and coerced abortions required to maintain childless Sea Org service.[216][217][218][219][220]
Opposition to psychiatry and health practices
Scientology maintains vehement institutional opposition to psychiatry and psychology.[221][222][223][224] Hubbard declared psychiatry to be a destructive and barbarous profession responsible for many of the world's wrongs and blamed it for atrocities such as the Holocaust. The Church of Scientology has held psychiatry responsible for the rise of Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin, the decline of educational standards in the United States, the wars in Bosnia and Kosovo, and the September 11 terrorist attacks.[199][221][225][226] In 1969, the Church established the Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) alongside psychiatrist Thomas Szasz, operating anti-psychiatry lobbying campaigns and running the permanent museum 'Psychiatry: An Industry of Death' on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood.[221][224][227][228][229]
The Church advocates alternative healing and detoxification routines outlined in Hubbard's books, prominently the Purification Rundown.[188][230][231][232] Developed in 1977, this program prescribes several weeks of daily multi-hour sauna sessions, rigorous physical exercise, and massive doses of vitamins and minerals, specifically niacin, under the premise that chemical toxins and drugs remain permanently stored in body fat and can be flushed out through perspiration.[188][230][231][232] Medical experts reject the premise of the Purification Rundown, stating that drugs are not stored in body fat in significant amounts and cannot be removed by hours of sweating, and describe Scientology's health claims as having no medical basis.[233][234]
Scientology's anti-psychiatry doctrines have been implicated in several high-profile participant deaths.[199][235][236][237] In December 1995, 36-year-old Lisa McPherson died after being held for seventeen days in isolation in Room 174 of the Fort Harrison Hotel in Clearwater, Florida.[235][236][237] Following a minor traffic accident where she exhibited psychotic symptoms, fellow Scientologists removed her from hospital care to administer Hubbard's 'Introspection Rundown', a secluded regimen prohibiting psychiatric medication.[235][236][238] McPherson died of a pulmonary embolism, which the medical examiner attributed to bed rest and dehydration, resulting in felony charges against the Church of Scientology Flag Service Organization for abuse of a disabled adult and practicing medicine without a license, which were subsequently dismissed in 2000 after the medical examiner changed the cause of death from undetermined to accidental, culminating in a confidential civil settlement in 2004.[236][239][240][241] Other deaths linked to medical disputes and suicides include Patrice Vic in France in 1988, Heribert Janosch in Germany, and Noah Lottick in the United States.[242][243]
Organization and social initiatives
The Church of Scientology functions through a centralized corporate hierarchy.[1][5][244] The Religious Technology Center (RTC) holds absolute ecclesiastical authority, owning the Dianetics and Scientology trademarks and licensing them to subordinate bodies.[77][95][245] The Church of Scientology International (CSI) serves as the coordinating mother church overseeing international management.[1][83][246] Continental and local branches include Class V Organizations ('Orgs') delivering intermediate training, smaller local Missions providing introductory services, and Advanced Organizations delivering upper-level auditing up to OT V in Los Angeles, East Grinstead, Copenhagen, and Sydney.[246] Flag Land Base in Clearwater, Florida, serves as the spiritual headquarters administering OT VI and VII.[83]
The Association for Better Living and Education (ABLE), founded in 1988, oversees secular social programs that apply Hubbard's methods in society.[247][248][249][250][251] Narconon provides drug rehabilitation based on the Purification Rundown; Criminon implements character rehabilitation courses in prisons; Applied Scholastics promotes Hubbard's Study Tech in public and private schools, including the flagship Delphi Schools; and The Way to Happiness Foundation distributes Hubbard's non-religious 21-rule moral code booklet, translated into over 70 languages.[232][248][252][253][254][255] In addition, the Volunteer Ministers program, established in 1976, deploys personnel to disaster zones worldwide, such as the September 11 attacks, the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, and the 2010 Haiti earthquake, to provide relief and administer spiritual 'assists'.[248][250][256][257] Critics and government inquiries have described these entities as front groups used for public relations and covert proselytization.[229][258][259][260][261]
The World Institute of Scientology Enterprises (WISE) operates as an association of commercial corporations and business professionals who implement Hubbard's administrative and management systems in private enterprise.[248][262] Businesses licensed under WISE pay royalty fees to the Church and agree to resolve internal disputes using Scientology ethics policies.[248][262]
To recruit public figures and opinion leaders, Hubbard launched 'Project Celebrity' in 1955, formulating a list of 63 prominent personalities to convert.[263][264][265] In 1969, the Church opened its primary Celebrity Centre International in Hollywood at the former Château Élysée, later adding seven specialized centres globally.[246][266][267][268] Notable past and present adherents who have publicly represented the organization include actors Tom Cruise, John Travolta, Kirstie Alley, Nancy Cartwright, Giovanni Ribisi, and Elisabeth Moss, as well as musicians Chick Corea and Isaac Hayes.[265][269][270][271] Several prominent figures later publicly defected and denounced the organization, including director Paul Haggis, actress Leah Remini, and actor Jason Beghe.[272][273][274]
Independent Scientology and the Free Zone
Independent Scientology, known collectively as the Free Zone, encompasses individuals and groups practicing Hubbard's teachings outside the institutional authority of the Church of Scientology.[77][96][97][98] The movement emerged during the leadership transition of the early 1980s, when former Sea Org flag captain Bill Robertson founded 'Ron's Org' in 1984 in Frankfurt, Germany.[275] Free Zone practitioners maintain that Miscavige's management altered Hubbard's original technical materials and introduced oppressive, commercialized bureaucracy.[97] Free Zone groups deliver auditing and OT levels at significantly lower costs, relying on pre-1982 texts and public domain materials.[96] The Church of Scientology considers all Free Zone practitioners heretical apostates, labeling them 'squirrels' and aggressively pursuing copyright and trademark litigation to prevent unauthorized delivery of auditing technologies.[1][276]
Legal status by country
The legal classification of Scientology varies substantially across jurisdictions, ranging from full tax-exempt religious recognition to designation as a commercial enterprise or a monitored extremist group.[1][277][278][279]
United States and Commonwealth
In the United States, after a decades-long conflict with the Internal Revenue Service, the IRS in October 1993 dropped all its lawsuits against Scientology entities and recognized the Church of Scientology International and its affiliated churches and centers as fully tax-exempt religious organizations.[105][106][107][280][281][282] As part of the settlement, the Church paid $12.5 million to resolve past liabilities and agreed to end litigation.[283] In Australia, the High Court issued a unanimous landmark decision in 1983 ruling that the Church of Scientology is a religious institution entitled to tax exemption, establishing legal definitions of religion applicable across the common-law world.[284][285][286][287] In New Zealand, the Inland Revenue Department recognized the Church as a charitable organization promoting religion in 2008.[288] In the United Kingdom, the Court of Appeal refused in 1970 to accept the Sussex church as a place of religious worship.[289] In December 2013, after a five-year case brought by Louisa Hodkin, the Supreme Court ruled that Scientology is a religion and that marriages in Church of Scientology chapels must be recognized as legal.[290][291][292][293][294][295]
In Canada, Scientology was convicted in 1992 of breach of public trust and criminal espionage for infiltrating Ontario government ministries, police departments, and tax offices, resulting in substantial criminal fines against the Church of Scientology of Toronto and three members.[296][297] The organization does not hold federal charitable tax-exempt status in Canada, although its ministers are permitted to solemnize marriages in several provinces.[298][299]
Germany and France
In Germany, state and federal authorities do not recognize Scientology as a religious or ideological community, categorizing it as a commercial enterprise with totalitarian characteristics aimed at undermining the democratic constitutional order.[199][278][279][300][301] In 1995, the Federal Labour Court ruled that Scientology operates primarily for profit rather than religion.[302][303][304] From 1997 onward, based on a resolution of the Conference of Interior Ministers, Scientology organizations were placed under official surveillance by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) and several state offices.[199][278][279] Public sector employers in Germany have utilized 'Scientology declarations' to screen out adherents from civil service roles.[305][306] In May 2026, the federal BfV announced it would no longer treat Scientology as a separate area of observation, while continuing to watch extremist individuals; experts attributed the step to the organization's declining importance, and the Bavarian state office said it would keep treating Scientology as a separate area.[307][308][309][310]
In France, parliamentary reports in 1995 and 1999 classified the Church of Scientology as a dangerous sect ('secte') and recommended its dissolution.[311][312][313][314][315] In 1978, L. Ron Hubbard was convicted in absentia of fraud by a Paris court and sentenced to four years' imprisonment.[316][317][318] Following private complaints in Paris, the Spiritual Association of the Church of Scientology Celebrity Centre and the SEL bookshop were prosecuted for organized fraud; on October 27, 2009, the Paris Correctional Court convicted both corporate entities and four executives, imposing fines totaling €600,000, a verdict upheld by the Paris Court of Appeal in 2012 and the Court of Cassation in October 2013.[319][320][321][322][323][324]

In Russia, while local Scientology groups initially registered in 1994, justice authorities consistently refused re-registration under the 1997 Law on Freedom of Conscience.[325][326][327] In April 2007 and October 2014, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled that Russian authorities violated Articles 9 and 11 of the European Convention on Human Rights by arbitrarily denying registration to Scientology branches in Moscow, Surgut, Nizhnekamsk, and Saint Petersburg.[327][328][329][330] Russian courts banned seven works by Hubbard under the Federal List of Extremist Materials in 2011–2012, and in November 2015, the Moscow City Court ordered the liquidation of the Church of Scientology of Moscow on the grounds that the word 'Scientology' was a commercial trademark owned by the RTC in the United States, precluding genuine religious status.[331][332][333][334] In December 2021, the ECHR ruled against Russia again, finding the extremist designations and liquidation orders unlawful and ordering compensation.[334][335][336][337]
In Spain, after criminal charges against 70 leaders were dismissed in 2002 following a 1988 raid, the Audiencia Nacional ruled on October 11, 2007, that the National Church of Scientology of Spain must be entered into the Registry of Religious Entities.[316][338][339][340][341] In Italy, the Supreme Court of Cassation ruled in October 1997 that Scientology is a religion.[342][343][344] In 2000, a final decision of the Milan Court of Appeal, following the Supreme Court's direction, ended the long Milan criminal case and acquitted members of the criminal charges linked to their activity in the movement.[342][345] In Belgium, after an 18-year investigation into allegations of organized extortion, fraud, and illegal medicine, the Brussels Criminal Court acquitted the Church of Scientology and eleven leaders in March 2016, ruling that the prosecution had improperly attempted to put an ideology on trial without concrete evidence.[346][347][348][349][350] In the Netherlands, several media reported in 2022 that the Church had obtained the status of a public-benefit organization, which brings tax exemptions.[351]
Conflicts and controversies
Scientology's aggressive pursuit of critics has resulted in landmark confrontations.[1][210][352][353] In the 1990s, church members filed approximately fifty lawsuits against the Cult Awareness Network (CAN), then the leading anti-cult group in the United States.[1][354][355][356] A judgment of $2 million arising from a deprogramming case drove CAN into bankruptcy in 1996; at bankruptcy auction, Scientologist attorney Steven L. Hayes purchased CAN's name, logo, phone lines, and files, re-establishing a 'New Cult Awareness Network' operated by Scientologists to refer callers to scholars and unconventional groups.[1][354][355][356][357][358]
The advent of the internet precipitated the 'Scientology versus the Internet' conflict.[1][359][360] In January 1995, Church attorney Helena Kobrin issued an rmgroup message to Usenet servers attempting to delete the newsgroup alt.religion.scientology, citing copyright and trademark violations, which sparked intense backlash among free-speech advocates.[360][361][362] The newsgroup subsequently suffered years of automated 'sporgery' attacks consisting of hundreds of thousands of forged spam messages, which former member Tory Christman testified were orchestrated by the OSA.[363][364][365] In 1993, former member Steven Fishman submitted sealed OT materials as exhibits in Church of Scientology International v. Fishman and Geertz, resulting in their dissemination online by Dutch activist Karin Spaink.[366][367][368][369] The Church sued Spaink and Dutch service providers (XS4ALL) for copyright infringement; Dutch courts ruled in favor of Spaink in 2003, affirming the right to quote copyrighted materials in the public interest.[367][369][370]
In January 2008, an internal Church video featuring Tom Cruise discussing Scientology's mission was leaked and uploaded to YouTube.[371][372][373] The Church issued DMCA takedown requests, prompting internet collective Anonymous to launch Project Chanology.[374][375] The campaign encompassed distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks against Scientology websites, prank calls, black faxes, and coordinated worldwide street protests on February 10, 2008, where an estimated 7,000 demonstrators gathered outside Scientology orgs with many of them wearing Guy Fawkes masks, in part to protect themselves from retaliation by the Church.[372][374][376][377] In May 2009, the English Wikipedia Arbitration Committee took the unprecedented measure of banning all editing from IP addresses owned by the Church of Scientology and affiliated networks to stop persistent promotional and defensive editing.[378][379][380][381]
Demographics and membership
Official Church membership claims diverge dramatically from independent census counts and academic estimates.[382][383][384] The Church routinely claims between 8 million and 12 million members worldwide across more than 11,000 churches, missions, and groups in 167 nations.[384][385][386][387] Former church president Heber Jentzsch testified in court depositions that church tallies include anyone who has ever purchased a Dianetics book, completed a personality test, or attended a single course since 1950.[382][384][388]
In contrast, independent estimates of practicing Scientologists vary: about 20,000 active members worldwide in 2025, 30,000 to 50,000 according to other independent sources, and a practicing core of 100,000 to 200,000 according to some observers.[1][180][383][389][390][391][392] The American Religious Identification Survey (ARIS) by Trinity College recorded 55,000 self-identified Scientologists in the United States in 2001, declining to 25,000 by 2008.[382][393][394][395][396] National censuses recorded 2,418 Scientologists in England and Wales in 2011 (declining to 1,800 in 2021), 1,700 in Canada in 2011 (declining to 1,400 in 2021), and 1,600 in Australia in 2021.[382][397][398][399][400] Independent estimates record approximately 3,500 members in Germany in 2019, 5,000 in Switzerland in 2015, between 100 and 200 in the Netherlands, and around 1,000 in Israel.[390][401][402][403]
Academic classification and reception
Sociologists and scholars of religion debate how Scientology should be categorized.[404][405] Many academic specialists, including Bryan R. Wilson, J. Gordon Melton, and Frank K. Flinn, classify Scientology as a new religious movement, arguing that it features core religious characteristics: belief in the transcendent immortal soul (thetan), ritual auditing practices, an ultimate soteriology, and structured congregations.[405][406][407][408] Scholars frequently characterize Scientology as a modern expression of Gnosticism, wherein salvation is achieved not through passive faith (pistis) but through esoteric knowledge and applied spiritual mastery (gnosis).[33][409][410][411] Others emphasize syncretic elements drawn from Theravada Buddhism, Taoism, Freudian psychoanalysis, Alfred Korzybski's General Semantics, and mid-20th-century American science fiction culture.[7][412][413][414]
Conversely, other researchers emphasize Scientology's secular, commercial, and control aspects.[369][415][416][417] Canadian sociologist Stephen A. Kent conceptualized Scientology not merely as a religion, but as a multi-faceted transnational corporation wherein religion operates as only one component alongside business ventures, political lobbying, and pseudo-medical programs.[369][416][417][418] Skenptics and secular critics classify Dianetics as an archetypal pseudoscience, highlighting that Hubbard's assertions regarding cellular engrams and radiation immunity ('Dianazene') lack empirical substantiation.[419][420][421]
In popular culture
Scientology has been widely referenced, satirized, and criticized in contemporary arts and popular media.[422][423] The satirical animated television series South Park broadcast the Emmy-nominated episode 'Trapped in the Closet' in November 2005, which dramatized the Xenu cosmogony with the on-screen caption 'This is what Scientologists actually believe'.[423][424][425] The broadcast led voice actor Isaac Hayes, a practicing Scientologist, to depart the show.[424] In 2012, director Paul Thomas Anderson released the film The Master, portraying a charismatic author, Lancaster Dodd, and his mental movement 'The Cause', which was widely recognized as being inspired by Hubbard and the emergence of Dianetics.[422] In 2015, Alex Gibney directed the Emmy-winning HBO documentary film Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief, based on Lawrence Wright's investigative book of the same name.[426][427][428][429]
Rock musician Frank Zappa satirized Hubbard and the Church in his 1979 conceptual rock opera Joe's Garage, featuring the fictional character L. Ron Hoover and the 'First Church of Appliantology'.[199] In the action video game Grand Theft Auto V (2013), the fictitious cult 'The Epsilon Program', led by Cris Formage, parodies Scientology through uniform colors, auditing-style devices, expensive ascending donation tiers, and the greeting 'Kifflom!'.[430][431]

The lecture on March 3 was entitled „Scientology: Milestone One.“ The title was not commented on until the first issue of a new journal, Scientology, in August 1952. Here Scientology was presented as: "a new word which names a new science. It is formed from the Latin word, scio, which means know; or distinguish, being related to the word scindo, which means cleave. (Thus the idea of differentiation is strongly implied). It is formed from the Greek word „logos,“ which means the word, or outward form by which the inward thought is expressed and made known; also, the inward thought or reason itself. Thus, Scientology means knowing about knowing, or science of knowledge». (Handbook of Scientology / Ed. James R. - «Hubbard and his fellow Scientologists developed the notion of using an E-meter to aid auditing. Substantial fees were charged for the meter and for auditing sessions using the meter. They repeatedly and explicitly represented that such auditing effectuated cures of many physical and mental illnesses. An individual processed with the aid of the E-meter was said to reach the intended goal of „clear“ and was led to believe there was reliable scientific proof that once cleared many, indeed most illnesses would automatically be cured. Auditing was guaranteed to be successful. All this was and is false — in short, a fraud. Contrary to representations made, there is absolutely no scientific or medical basis in fact for the claimed cures attributed [**4] to E-meter auditing.»— United States of America, Libelant, v. - World Religions in America, 2003, Scientology and Psychiatry, p. 307: «Most Americans are familiar with Scientology's opposition to psychiatry and psychotlogy, especially Tom Cruise's occassional and widely publicized outbursts on this subject. ... Scientology's objections to secular beliefes about mental health and illness are religious, deriving from its conviction that people are perfectly divine beings who have been damaged by negative expereinces. ... Scientology holds that secular images of mental normalcy are not genuinely scientific, contrary to the claims of psychiatry and psychology. ... Scientology, unlike some religions, is not opposed to secular medicine in general. ... Religion and its adherents usually are passionate and zealous about their believe in sacred reality and its enactment; and science and its proponents commonly are equally fervent about secular reality and its appropriate enactment, sometimes to the point of looking like religion. Viewed in this way, Scientology's objections to psychiatry and psychology ... are hardly unique or unusual. This will not resolve the related disputes, any more than it settles contemprorary debates about birth control, abortion, or evolution, but it makes such matters more understandable». - Frank Flinn, 2005: «Many people have asked whether Scientology is a religion. I answer that to be a religion a group has to have 1) beliefs in something transcendental or ultimate, 2) practices (rites and codes of behavior) that re-inforce those beliefs and 3) a community that is sustained by both the beliefs and practices. Scientology has all three. In its belief system it holds that humans are immortal "thetans" (or substantial souls) that have an eternal destiny with the Infinite. Second its religious practices are centered on "auditing" and training for auditing, whereby thetans are freed from "engrams" (more or less the equivalent of the Jewish and Christian concepts of "sin"). Third they definitely have a community set up in a number of churches throughout the world with headquarters in LA. The term "Scientology" means, literally, the study of (logos) knowingness (scientia). The church teaches that people have to attain knowingness if they are to fulfill their eternal destinies as thetans. In this they are remarkably like early Christian Gnostics who sought the secret and saving knowledge about their own selves as spirits». (Flinn F. K. Scientology // Washington Post. — 2005.)
- Ellwood, 2016: «The myth reminds one of the anscient gnostic myth in which beings of divine origin become trapped in the material, historial world, lose knowledge of their true origin, nature, and destiny, and need the liberating gnosis that restores them to their proper destiny».
