Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You is a Japanese romantic comedy and slice of life manga series written and illustrated by Jinushi.[1] Originally debuted as a webcomic on Twitter on March 9, 2022, under the working title Super no Ura de Yani Sū Hanashi, it began its magazine serialization in Square Enix's Monthly Big Gangan on August 25, 2022.[2][3] An anime television series adaptation produced by Asahi Production premiered on TBS and AT-X in July 2026.[4][5] The manga won the Next Manga Award in 2022 in the web category.[6][7]

Plot

Sasaki is an overworked, exhausted middle-aged corporate salaryman employed in sales at Genki Shōji, an exploitative black company.[8][9][10] To relieve the stress of excessive overtime, unreasonable critiques, and harsh treatment from his despotic bald boss, he makes a daily habit of stopping by a local twenty-four-hour supermarket, Super S, located in front of Moromoro Station.[8][10] At the store, he is revitalized by the warm customer service and radiant smile of Yamada, a young female cashier who works at checkout counter number two.[11] Even when other registers are completely vacant, Sasaki deliberately waits in line at Yamada's counter just to experience that brief moment of comfort and cheer, holding her in very high regard without any inappropriate romantic designs.[12][13]

One evening, a long company meeting causes Sasaki to arrive at Super S later than usual, only to find Yamada's register vacant because her shift has already concluded.[10] Needing to relieve his stress, he leaves the supermarket to look for a place to smoke.[10][13] Feeling the narrow, unforgiving climate faced by smokers in contemporary public spaces and receiving sharp looks from passersby, he stands around bewildered until a woman dressed in flashy street clothes calls out to him from the alleyway behind the building, inviting him to join her in the store's secluded employee smoking area.[14]

The woman, who introduces herself under the name Tayama, dresses in a rock-inspired style, wearing a leather jacket and multiple ear piercings.[15] Although taken aback by her bold, teasing remarks and her uncanny ability to deduce that he is an admirer of Yamada, Sasaki explains in defense that he merely draws energy and healing from the cashier's professionalism.[13] Tayama is relieved to learn that Sasaki is not visiting Yamada for romantic reasons.[13]

During a subsequent visit to register two, Yamada unexpectedly thanks Sasaki, mentioning that a coworker named Tayama told her that he was a devoted fan.[13] While Sasaki feels thoroughly embarrassed and secretly harbors slight resentment toward Tayama for blabbing about his appreciation, he remains completely oblivious to the fact that Tayama is actually Yamada herself, completely transformed after her shift by changing her hairstyle, clothing, and overall demeanor.[16] From that evening on, sharing cigarettes in secret behind the supermarket becomes an indispensable daily ritual for both of them.[10]

Characters

The story centers on the evolving interactions between two smokers behind the grocery store, supported by a cast of supermarket employees, corporate office coworkers, and neighborhood locals.

Main characters

Sasaki (佐々木) is voiced by Takuya Satō in Japanese, Giles Panton in English, and Carlo Vázquez in Latin American Spanish.[17][18][19] He is an exhausted sales section chief (shunin) at Genki Shōji, originally from Mie Prefecture.[8][9][20] He is 45 years old at the start of the story and later turns 46.[9][21] His birthday is February 25, just one day after Yamada's.[22] Due to presbyopia, he occasionally wears reading glasses, and he has a fondness for okaki rice crackers.[22][23] Sasaki lives alone in an apartment near the station.[24] He had previously lived in the same apartment and worked at the current branch eight years prior, but after a major professional failure at corporate headquarters followed by a two-year leave of absence, he returned as a re-hire.[24] His encounters behind the supermarket help him overcome his past trauma and regain his confidence, eventually earning performance commendations from company headquarters. Sasaki first started smoking during his university years when his older girlfriend pressured him into trying a cigarette; his preferred brand is BONSTARs.[25][26] He is single, possesses low self-esteem, constantly apologizes, and has no personal hobbies outside of tobacco and monitoring the growth of his five-year-old niece, the daughter of his sister who is ten years younger than him.[24]

Yamada (山田) / Tayama (田山) is voiced by Seena Hoshiki in Japanese, Caitlyn Bairstow in English, and Itzel Mendoza in Latin American Spanish.[17][18][19] She is 24 years old at the start of the story, later turning 25, with her birthday falling on February 24.[21][27][28] She has a well-endowed bust, had her ears pierced in the third year of junior high school, dislikes ghost stories and dirty jokes, and struggles at drawing.[29][30][31][32][33] Yamada is an enthusiastic lover of ramen, to the extent of using images of noodle bowls as her phone wallpaper, and while she is normally strong with alcohol, she gets thoroughly intoxicated once or twice a year.[34][35] She is poor at cooking beyond instant noodles, and she dislikes the taste of coffee, though she can swallow it if necessary.[36] Her preferred brand of cigarettes is Beside Me, and she treasures a portable ashtray that Sasaki gifted her in return for odor-eliminating spray.[37]

During regular working hours on the night shift, she acts as cashier Yamada at counter two, embodying an immaculate, smiling ideal employee recognized with awards and company interviews.[11][38] Outside working hours she appears before Sasaki as Tayama, in a rock fashion style.[15] She is serious about her work but slovenly outside it, her true personality being close to Tayama's.[39] Yamada and Tayama wear their hair at different lengths: at work she divides her back hair into upper and lower sections, and she hides her ear piercings and the mole on her neck with her hair, adhesive bandages or a choker.[16] Yamada began working at the supermarket eight years earlier as a student part-timer, when the store operated under the name Chō Shinsen Ichiba.[40] In that period, she was stiff, unable to smile, and on the verge of resigning due to harassment from a persistent stalker customer, but an unkempt salaryman customer stepped in to protect her and gave her words of encouragement, which inspired her to take up smoking after turning twenty.[40][41] She does not know that the man who once saved her was Sasaki.[42] She constantly teases Sasaki with bold and suggestive behavior.[43] His kindness and consideration often help her, and she cares for him, calling him her source of healing, while secretly fearing that he will realize Yamada and Tayama are the same person.[43][44] After seeing her pedicure while treating Yamada following a bicycle fall, Sasaki begins to suspect that Yamada and Tayama are the same person.[45] He has in fact realized that they are the same person, but pretends not to notice until she tells him her reasons.[44]

Super S staff

Goto (後藤) is voiced by Toa Yukinari.[46][47] She is the 40-year-old manager of Super S Moromoro Station branch, recognizable by a beauty mark near her mouth.[48][49] Goto is a smoker who favors heated tobacco.[48] She previously worked in the store planning division at corporate headquarters, but requested a transfer back to the retail floor because desk administration did not suit her.[49] Sharp-witted despite her deadpan and blunt exterior, Goto quickly sees through Yamada and Sasaki's clandestine meetings behind the store; while she nominally cautions Yamada about bringing a non-employee into the private smoking area, she chooses to turn a blind eye, treating their slow-burning dynamic as free entertainment to enliven dry night shifts.[49][50] Goto loves romance manga, reading them in her private car during break periods, and is an avid admirer of manga artist Nishizono.[49][51] In the volume tankōbon under-cover omake strips, she imagines various cosplay scenarios featuring Sasaki and Yamada.

Maezawa (前澤) is voiced by Yōko Hikasa.[46][47] Known as Chief Maezawa, she is the 36-year-old lead cashier supervisor.[52][53] Married with a young son, Maezawa is a lively, good-natured chatterbox who handles cashier scheduling and excels at comforting lost children.[52][54] Goto affectionately nicknames her Zawa.[52] She effortlessly recognizes Sasaki as Yamada's regular admirer and notices Yamada dressing up as Tayama, but chooses not to burst the bubble, though her loose tongue accidentally causes occasional misunderstandings, such as inadvertently spreading a rumor that Sasaki was married.[53]

Ohno (大野) is voiced by Megumi Toyoguchi in Japanese and Ruth Alexander in English.[18][46][47] She is a 58-year-old veteran cashier who has worked at the supermarket for over thirty years.[55][56] A gentle and petite non-smoker, Ohno has maintained a passionate hobby of playing pachinko for more than two decades, regularly sharing the snack prizes she wins with her coworkers during shift breaks.[55][56][57] She privately informed Goto of her plans to retire, a secret that was prematurely leaked by Maezawa.[58]

Obata (小畑), known to colleagues as Oba, is voiced by Rikuya Yasuda.[46][47] He is the 27-year-old head of the produce department.[59] Standing 190 centimeters tall, he is an introverted, tearful, and intensely shy smoker who avoids crowded or cramped areas.[59][60] Despite his meek demeanor, his produce department boasts the highest sales among all chain branches, and his physical strength is formidable enough to physically subdue an abusive stalker, prompting Yamada to describe him as monster-like.[60][61]

Kawakami (川上) is a 21-year-old petite female employee who serves as the head of the seafood department.[62] After completing a training program, she returned to Super S, remaining hyper-sensitive about workplace relations.[24][62]

Noma (野間) is a 36-year-old bespectacled employee from the customer service planning department at corporate headquarters.[63] He previously served directly under Goto in the store planning section before taking over her post when she returned to store management.[63][64] He is temporarily dispatched to the Moromoro Station branch to supervise a points-card membership campaign.[64] Like Sasaki, Noma is a smoker who experienced profound career setbacks in the past.[24]

Genki Shōji and others

Suzuki (鈴木) is voiced by Shinya Takahashi in Japanese and Andrew Francis in English.[18][65][66] He is Sasaki's colleague and a friend since their university days.[24][66][67] Married to Keiko and father to a daughter named Megumi, Suzuki also owns a family dog and has managed to maintain personal fulfillment despite the grueling corporate environment.[66][68][69] As Sasaki's trusted smoking buddy and confidant at the office, he frequently exchanges playful banter with him; during an office drinking party where Sasaki was absent, Suzuki slammed his beer mug onto the table to forcefully shut down colleagues gossiping about Sasaki's past career failures.[66][67]

Sasaki's direct superior is Department Manager Murai, voiced by Yōhei Tadano in Japanese and Brian Dobson in English.[18][70] At work, Sasaki suffers from a heavy workload and unwarranted scolding from his superior.[12] Another former superior, Nakajima, previously worked with Sasaki at the branch office, serving as a revered mentor who once promoted him to headquarters before eventually retiring.[71]

Nitta (新田) is Sasaki's direct subordinate.[72] Under his guidance, she develops into an outstanding worker who receives accolades from headquarters, developing a strong sense of gratitude toward Sasaki while forming a competitive rivalry with Suzuki.[24][72] Her face was drawn without eyes until volume 9 of the manga.[73]

Nishizono (西園) is a 62-year-old distinguished shōjo manga artist.[74][75][76] Years earlier, after finishing a long-running manga series, she fell into severe burnout and aimlessness, but was shaken awake when Ohno bluntly told her she was taking life for granted; this sparked a mutual customer-clerk bond that Nishizono describes as a comfortable one-sided affection, making Ohno's impending retirement a devastating blow to her. Nishizono is a smoker and an old acquaintance of Goto, with whom she entrusts her eight-year-old dog, Daigorō, during trips abroad.[75][76][77][78] Daigorō (voiced by Takuya Satō), whose name incorporates a character from Ohno's name, often frequents the back alley of Super S.[79] The dog is clever enough to understand human speech completely and communicates with a bark of bafu; it once helped Sasaki find Yamada's lost portable ashtray in a drain beside the store entrance by following her scent.[78]

Tōno (遠野) is Sasaki's senior from his university days and his former girlfriend after graduation, whose insistence led to Sasaki first picking up smoking.[25][80][81]

Production

Prior to starting the series, manga creator Jinushi was serializing Rokurei: Tenseishi Rinne Kuyakusho Dairokkanbu Joreika Katsudouki in Monthly Big Gangan.[15] His editor suggested that he draw a standalone short manga as a creative writing exercise to improve narrative pacing.[15] Because Rokurei was a supernatural fantasy piece, Jinushi opted to create a grounded, realistic story.[82] Drawing upon his personal background working in sales and customer service, he selected a neighborhood supermarket as the primary setting.[82]

Jinushi felt that service workers sometimes encounter nasty customers, and that clerks who can keep smiling even in such situations are admirable.[82] He designed Yamada as such a cashier, while her after-hours persona, Tayama, was intentionally conceived as the complete opposite: casual, blunt, and unconstrained.[82]

Publication

Jinushi began self-publishing the comic on Twitter on March 9, 2022, under the title Super no Ura de Yani Sū Hanashi (スーパーの裏でヤニ吸う話; A Story About Smoking at the Back of the Supermarket).[2][15] The opening chapter went viral, gathering over 190,000 likes by June 2, 2022, and surpassing 2.5 million aggregate likes across the series by June 25.[15][83] Following this reception, Square Enix picked up the series for formal magazine serialization in Monthly Big Gangan, beginning with the 2022 Volume 09 issue released on August 25, 2022, where it debuted with the magazine cover illustration and opening color pages.[3][83]

For the commercial serialization, the title was modified to Super no Ura de Yani Sū Futari (スーパーの裏でヤニ吸うふたり).[2] Concurrently, chapters 4 through 16 were removed from Twitter, though Jinushi announced that original installments would continue to appear on Twitter alongside the magazine release.[2][84] The first compiled tankōbon volume was released by Square Enix on the same day as its magazine debut, containing newly drawn bonus material.[3][83] By July 24, 2026, nine volumes had been published under Square Enix's Big Gangan Comics imprint.[85] Special limited editions accompanied several releases: volume 3 included the bonus booklet Ura Yani, volume 4 included an exclusive Super S tote eco-bag, and volumes 6 and 8 included the booklets Ura Yani 2 and Ura Yani 3 respectively.[86][87][88][89]

Square Enix released the manga digitally in English through its Manga UP! Global platform starting in April 2023, while Comikey Media licensed digital rights in May 2023.[90][91][92] At Anime Expo 2023, Square Enix Manga & Books announced print licensing for North America, releasing the first volume on February 20, 2024.[93][94] The series has been licensed in various languages, including French by Kana, Italian by Edizioni BD under its J-Pop imprint, Polish by Studio JG, Spanish by Panini Comics and Editorial Ivrea, Ukrainian by MAL'OPUS, Thai by Phoenix Next, Traditional Chinese by Tong Li Publishing, Simplified Chinese by Huawen Tianxia, and Russian by XL Media in 2-in-1 omnibus editions.[95][96][97][98][99][100][101]

Volume 8 was published in Japan on January 23, 2026 (ISBN 978-4-301-00201-7; special edition ISBN 978-4-301-00202-4) and in English on November 17, 2026 (ISBN 979-8-89910-037-6).[89][115][116] It compiles chapters Smoke 51 through Smoke 56.

Volume 9 was published in Japan on July 24, 2026 (ISBN 978-4-3010-0656-5).[85] It collects Smoke 57 through Smoke 62. Later uncollected magazine releases include Smoke 63 and Smoke 64.

Anime adaptation

An anime television series adaptation was announced on July 18, 2025.[117] Produced by Asahi Production, the series is directed by Tadato Suzuki and Aoi Mori, with Mio Inoue handling series composition, Yasuka Ōtaki designing the characters, Mahiru Shinya directing prop design, and Masaru Sotoya serving as art director.[5][66] Shūji Uemura managed color design, Ryō Kujirai directed photography, Hidenori Fujitani oversaw CG direction, and Ami Ishii edited the series.[5] The musical score was composed by Shin Kono and Sayaka Aoki, alongside sound direction by Kōhei Yoshida and music production by Nichion.[5][66]

Ahead of the television broadcast, an advance stream debuted on June 3, 2026, on Abema in Japan and internationally on Crunchyroll, presenting the content of the first six television episodes as twelve 10-minute mini-episodes.[118][119] The television broadcast premiered in Japan on July 9, 2026 (effectively late-night July 10 at 23:56 JST) across 28 TBS-affiliated network stations in the Thursday late-night slot previously occupied by The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule the World, followed by broadcasts on CS network AT-X starting July 12.[120] All television broadcasts included closed captioning.[120][121] Crunchyroll streamed the series internationally outside Asia, while Netflix distributed it across selected Asian territories.[122][123] An English dub produced by Ocean Productions debuted on Netflix simultaneously with the broadcast, followed by its Crunchyroll debut on July 23, 2026.[124][125] A Latin American Spanish dub premiered on Crunchyroll on July 30, 2026.[19] The series was slated for a four-volume Blu-ray release between September 16 and December 16, 2026.

The television broadcast and Abema advance streaming releases utilized differing sets of theme songs.[5] For the terrestrial television broadcast, the opening theme song is Ichijiku Kemuri (Fig Smoke), performed by Zutomayo with lyrics and composition by ACA-ne and arrangement by 100kai Koudo and ZTMY, while the ending theme song is Fiction, performed, written, and composed by imase with arrangement by Shin Sakiura.[5][66] For the Abema streaming edition, the opening theme is Kuzurinen, performed by Zutomayo, and the ending theme is Night Dancer, performed by imase and arranged by ESME MORI.[5]

Episode 8, titled Searching Behind the Supermarket with You (スーパーの裏から見つけるふたり), was scripted by Mio Inoue, storyboarded by Naoki Matsuura, and directed by Tomio Yamauchi; it aired on August 27, 2026.[126]

Episode 9, titled Asking Behind the Supermarket Alone (スーパーの裏で触れるひとり), was scripted by Mio Inoue, storyboarded by Takehiro Nakayama, and directed by Kazunobu Fuseki, with chief animation direction by 佐藤惠美 and Yasuka Ōtaki; it aired on September 4, 2026.[126]

Episode 10, titled Shining Behind the Supermarket with You (スーパーの裏で光るふたり), was scripted by Misaki Morie, storyboarded by Aoi Mori, and directed by Ryōhei Endō; it aired on September 11, 2026.[127]

Episode 11, titled Hello from Behind the Supermarket (スーパーの裏で迎える声), was scripted by Mio Inoue, storyboarded by Kazutaka Muraki, and directed by Harume Kosaka; it aired on September 17, 2026.[126]

Episode 12, titled Keeping It Going Behind the Supermarket with You (スーパーの裏で続くふたり), was scripted by Mio Inoue, directed by Aoi Mori, and storyboarded by Aoi Mori and Masato Suzuki; it aired on September 24, 2026.[126]

A special radio drama adaptation titled Super no Ura de Yani Sū Futari Special Radio Drama was broadcast on TBS Radio from June to September 2026 as a recurring segment on the program After 6 Junction 2, airing around 21:00 on Mondays excluding the first Monday of each month.[128] The original scripts for the radio drama were drafted, structured, and supervised by author Jinushi, starring Takuya Satō as Sasaki and Seena Hoshiki as Yamada/Tayama, followed by cast discussion segments.[128] Episodes were archived and distributed via podcast.[128][129]

Two special programs about the anime aired on ABEMA. The first, subtitled ABEMA no Tokuban de Katariau Sannin, aired on July 4, 2026, with Takuya Satō, Seena Hoshiki, and Shinya Takahashi, and with Haruka Mori as master of ceremonies. The second, subtitled ABEMA no Tokuban de Katariau Gonin, aired on August 23, 2026, with Satō, Hoshiki, Takahashi (who was also master of ceremonies), Yōko Hikasa, and Rikuya Yasuda.

Reception and accolades

Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You reached over 200,000 copies in circulation with its first volume, expanded to 600,000 by February 2023, 1.5 million by February 2024, 2.5 million by July 2025, 3 million by January 2026, and exceeded 3.5 million copies in circulation, including digital releases, by July 2026.[130][131][132][133][134]

Critical response has highlighted the series' atmosphere, visual expressiveness, and character chemistry.
