That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is a Japanese fantasy light novel series written by Fuse and illustrated by Mitz Vah. Originating in 2013 as a web novel on the user-generated site Shōsetsuka ni Narō, it was acquired by Micro Magazine, which published twenty-three light novel volumes under its GC Novels imprint from May 2014 to November 2025. The narrative follows Satoru Mikami, a Tokyo salaryman who is fatally stabbed, reincarnates in an unfamiliar world as a powerful slime named Rimuru Tempest, and establishes a cooperative nation for monsters.

Plot

Satoru Mikami is an ordinary thirty-seven-year-old corporate worker residing in Tokyo who is largely satisfied with his bachelor routine despite lacking a romantic partner. While meeting his junior colleague Tamura and Tamura's fiancée Miho Sawatari on the street, an assailant wielding a knife rushes toward them. Satoru pushes Tamura out of harm's way and receives a fatal stab wound in his back. As Satoru lies dying, his passing thoughts trigger an internal auditory phenomenon known as the Voice of the World, which interprets his final reflections as requests and grants him a suite of unique skills and physical resistances for his next existence.

Satoru awakens inside an underground cavern in an unfamiliar world, discovering that he has materialized as a gelatinous, genderless slime creature.[1][2] Through experimentation and the guidance of his unique skill Great Sage, he learns to navigate using Magic Perception and discovers the capabilities of his skill Predator, which allows him to absorb objects or organisms, analyze their composition, store them in a stomach pocket, and replicate their forms and skills.[3][4] He encounters Veldora, a Storm Dragon classified as a Catastrophe-level entity who was sealed inside the cave three centuries earlier by the hero Chronoa using the technique Infinite Prison.[4][5] Sympathizing with the dragon's isolation, Satoru befriends him; the two exchange names, with Veldora bestowing the personal name Rimuru and Satoru providing the shared family surname Tempest.[4] Rimuru swallows Veldora along with his barrier using Predator so that Great Sage can analyze the seal from within.[4]

Early story arcs

In the Status Improvement arc, Rimuru makes contact with a goblin village, the first village he contacts after his reincarnation.[6][7] A pack of direwolves attacks the goblin village; after the pack leader dies, his son Ranga and the pack become Rimuru's subordinates.[8] Rimuru names the goblins, who evolve into hobgoblins, and Ranga, who evolves into a Tempest Wolf.[6][7][8] Rimuru then visits Dwargon..[9][10] After a dispute with Vester during Rimuru's visit to Dwargon, the smith Kaijin joins Rimuru, who was looking for craftsmen, together with his childhood friends, the brothers Garm, Dold, and Myrd.[9][10] Rimuru meets Shizue Izawa, a Japanese Otherworlder who hosts the spirit Ifrit, when she and Elen are taken in at his village.[11][12][13] When Ifrit goes berserk, Rimuru consumes it with Predator and stops the rampage.[11] Mortally weakened by age and separation from Ifrit, Shizue requests that Rimuru consume her remains so that she may rest within him rather than decompose in an alien world; Rimuru obliges, gaining the ability to assume a human appearance modeled after her youthful likeness.[13][14]

In the Forest Disturbance arc, six ogres whose village was destroyed by the Orc Lord's army join Rimuru.[15][16] Once the misunderstanding is clarified, the ogres swear fealty to Rimuru and evolve into kijin after receiving names.[17] Concurrently, the demon Gelmud manipulates a massive horde of two hundred thousand orcs under the Orc Lord, intending to birth a new demon lord through the unique skill Starved.[18] The Orc Lord's army advances to the kingdom of the lizardmen.[18] The dryad Treyni tells Rimuru of the Orc Lord Geld's armed uprising.[19] Forming a coalition with the lizardmen led by Abiru and aided by the expelled prince Gabil, Rimuru's forces engage the horde. Rimuru duels the Orc Disaster Geld, devouring him with Predator and agreeing to shoulder the burdens and sins of the starving orc species.[20] In the aftermath, Rimuru assimilates the surviving 150,000 orcs into the community, names their new leader Geld, and establishes the Jura Forest Great Alliance, with Rimuru named as its chancellor.[17]

In the Demon Lord Invasion arc, the demon lord Clayman orchestrates machinations to destabilize the Great Forest of Jura.[21][22][23] This draws the attention of Demon Lord Milim Nava, an ancient dragonoid who visits Rimuru's town out of boredom and becomes Rimuru's close friend after he placates her with honey.[24][25] Milim takes up temporary residence in the town. King Gazel Dwargo visits and formalizes a mutual non-aggression and commercial treaty between Dwargon and Tempest.[24][26] To divert human scrutiny from the monster nation, Rimuru negotiates with Youm, leader of a frontier scout unit from the Kingdom of Falmuth, orchestrating a plan where Youm takes public credit as the champion who defeated the Orc Lord.[21] Meanwhile, the beastman Phobio, a subordinate of Demon Lord Carrion, is manipulated by Tear and Footman into serving as a vessel for Charybdis.[27][28] When Charybdis fights Tempest's forces, Milim destroys it with a restrained blast that leaves only Phobio, and Rimuru separates the magic core that had fused with Phobio.[29] Carrion thanks Rimuru for rescuing Phobio, recognizes Tempest as a friendly nation and seeks trade with it.[30]

In the Human-Monster Interaction arc, Tempest establishes diplomatic and economic relationships with the Kingdom of Blumund through Guildmaster Fuze and Baron Beryard.[31] Rimuru travels to the Kingdom of Ingrasia to fulfill Shizue's lingering regret regarding five children summoned from other worlds: Kenya Misaki, Ryota Sekiguchi, Gale Gibson, Alice Rondo, and Chloe Aubert.[32][33] Due to incomplete summonings, these children possess excessive, destabilizing magicules that will prove fatal within five years.[32] Rimuru takes a position as their teacher at the Freedom Academy and consults Freedom Association Grandmaster Yuuki Kagurazaka.[32] Rimuru escorts the children to the Dwelling of the Spirits in the Republic of Ulgrasia, where Demon Lord Ramiris resides.[32][34] With Ramiris's aid, Rimuru facilitates the bonding of high-ranking spirits into each child's body to stabilize their magicule flow and avert their early deaths.[32]

Demon lord awakening and crusade arcs

In the Demon Lord Awakening arc, Rimuru departs Ingrasia for Tempest but is ambushed by Hinata Sakaguchi, chief knight of the Imperial Guard of the Holy Empire of Lubelius and captain of the Crusaders, who has been misled by false intelligence into believing Rimuru murdered Shizue.[35][36][37] Rimuru escapes using a body double, only to discover that Tempest has been blockaded by anti-magic barriers erected by the witch Myulan under Clayman's coercion and invaded by an army from the Kingdom of Falmuth allied with the Western Holy Church.[38] Three summoned otherworlders under Falmuth's service have slaughtered numerous citizens, including Shion and Gobuzo.[39] Learning from the adventurer Ellen an ancient myth about a dragon reviving after its master evolved into a demon lord, Rimuru decides to undergo the Harvest Festival evolution to acquire resurrection abilities.[40] When Falmuth's twenty-thousand-strong invasion force approaches, Rimuru annihilates the soldiers single-handedly using the physics-based sunlight spell Megiddo and the unique skill Merciless.[41][42]

During the war with the Kingdom of Falmuth, Rimuru summons the Primordial demon Noir, who later becomes his subordinate Diablo.[41] The court mage Razen, who had taken over Shogo's body, is powerless against Diablo and is taken prisoner with Edmaris and Reyhiem.[43][44][45] Great Sage evolves into the ultimate skill Wisdom King Raphael, and Gluttony, which Predator had become, merges with Merciless to evolve into the ultimate skill Gluttonous King Beelzebuth.[46][47] Operating Rimuru's unconscious body, Raphael executes the secret art of revival, restoring Shion and all fallen townspeople while conferring evolutionary gifts upon Rimuru's subordinates.[48] Following his awakening, Rimuru completes the analysis of the Infinite Prison and releases Veldora, providing him with an enhanced human clone body to inhabit.[46][49] Rimuru also formally bestows the name Diablo upon Noir.[41]

In the Octagram Soars arc, Ramiris arrives in Tempest to warn Rimuru that Clayman has convened a banquet of demon lords, known as Walpurgis, where Clayman intends to orchestrate the destruction of Tempest and Carrion.[50][51][52] Tempest's leaders hold an international conference, where Ramiris warns that Clayman intends to kill Carrion and Rimuru; Tempest prepares for war, and Rimuru decides to confront Clayman directly at Walpurgis.[50][51] The war against Clayman's army ends in a one-sided victory for the allied forces, and a separate group of Tempest leaders takes Clayman's stronghold, Jistav Castle.[50][51][53] At Walpurgis, Clayman attempts to frame Rimuru, but Shion physically overwhelms him in combat.[54] Milim and Frey reveal they were merely feigning compliance with Clayman's schemes.[55] Rimuru faces Clayman after the latter triggers a forced pseudo-awakening, consuming Clayman's soul and body entirely with Beelzebuth.[54] Following Clayman's death, Carrion and Frey step down as demon lords to join Milim's domain.[55] Rimuru renames the remaining council of eight rulers the Octagram, or the Eight Star Demon Lords.[50]

In the Saint-Monster Confrontation arc, the Seven Celestial Sages alter diplomatic messages between Rimuru and Hinata, orchestrating an armed conflict in order to eliminate Hinata and solidify human dominance.[56][57][58] Hinata marches toward Tempest with her Crusader captains to seek a peaceful resolution, but battle breaks out between the Crusaders and Tempest's executives.[59][60] Rimuru defeats Hinata in a one-on-one duel.[56][57][61] When the Seven Celestial Sages spring a trap, Hinata shields Rimuru and is critically injured.[56][57] In Falmuth, Diablo unravels the sages' plot, defeats the Three Martial Sages, and slays three Celestial Sages.[62] Demon Lord Luminous Valentine arrives at Tempest in person, purging the treacherous sages and healing Hinata.[63] Nicholas Speltus destroys the remaining sage Gran in Lubelius, though Gran's spiritual body returns to his true form as Granbell Rosso.[58] Diplomatic ties and a century-long non-aggression pact are subsequently established between Tempest and Lubelius.[64]

Territorial expansion and later conflicts

In the Territorial Seizure and Founder's Festival arcs, Rimuru oversees preparations for the Tempest Opening Festival, inviting dignitaries from across the continent.[65][66][67][68] Ramiris relocates permanently to Tempest, where Rimuru utilizes her Labyrinth Creation ability to build a hundred-floor underground dungeon serving as an adventurer attraction, research facility, and defensive sanctuary.[69][70] During the festival, guests witness martial arts exhibitions, musical concerts, and the official opening of the labyrinth.[67][71][72] An otherworlder youth named Masayuki Honjo arrives, heralded by the populace as the Lightspeed Hero due to his unique skill Chosen One.[73][74][75] After participating in the tournament, Masayuki admits his lack of real combat skill to Rimuru, and the two establish a cooperative partnership.[76] Behind the scenes, the Rosso family, led by Granbell and his reincarnated granddaughter Mariabell, attempts to induce a financial panic in Tempest by cornering currency markets, but Rimuru circumvents their plot with financial backing from Dwargon and Empress Elmesia of Sarion.[77]

Subsequent narrative arcs trace escalating geopolitical warfare across the continent.[78][79][80] Mariabell attempts to usurp control of an ancient chaos dragon within the ruins of Amrita, but Yuuki betrays and slays her, stealing her unique skill Greed.[81][82] Granbell makes a desperate final assault on Lubelius to awaken the sleeping Chronoa, perishing in battle against Luminous and transferring his remaining angelic power to Chloe Aubert.[83][84] Emperor Rudra Nam Ul Nasca goes to war with Tempest.[85] In the Empire Invasion arc, an imperial army of 700,000 invades Tempest, while imperial forces with 2,000 magic tanks and 100 airships attack Dwargon.[86][87][88] Tempest's forces, led by the newly appointed Twelve Guardian Lords, decimate the imperial legions; Rimuru uses the gathered souls to awaken twelve of his subordinates into True Demon Lords.[89]

By the time of the war with Tempest, Rudra has already been replaced by the ultimate skill Justice King Michael, which originally belonged to Veldanava until he exchanged it for Rudra's ultimate skill Uriel.[90][91] Michael and the Primordial Angel Feldway lead the Phantom and Angelic armies in the Tenma Great War to exterminate mortal civilizations and force Veldanava's rebirth.[92][93] Michael later comes in person to kill Rimuru; after Chloe defeats Michael's parallel existence, Rimuru nullifies Michael's time stop and all the powers and techniques of those under Michael's control, and devours him with Void God Azathoth.[91][94] Masayuki awakens his ultimate skill True Hero, manifesting the soul of the legendary Hero Rudra, while Rimuru and his multinational alliance confront Feldway, the insectar monarch Zellanus, and the rampaging phantom beast Ivarage.[95]

World and cosmology

The cosmology established by the creator dragon Veldanava encompasses multiple dimensions and planes differing in physical constants and magical saturation.[96][97] The primary setting is the Base World, a material realm populated by humans, demi-humans, and monsters where magicules permeate the environment.[98][99] Beyond the material world lie the Spiritual World, inhabited by non-corporeal entities such as angels, demons, and spirits; the semi-spiritual Chaos World, where spiritual beings can manifest; and the Underworld, home to the aggressive Phantom race.[98][99][100] The universe operates on a single continuous timeline where parallel worlds do not coexist, meaning an individual entity cannot exist redundantly across identical temporal points.[96] Governing universal phenomena is the Voice of the World, an omnipresent metaphysical system that announces major developments such as skill acquisitions, evolutionary breakthroughs, and Harvest Festivals.[99]

Magic system and skills

Powers within the setting are categorized into skills, magic, and arts.[101][102] Skills are metaphysical programs engraved upon an entity's soul, powered by the soul's innate energy.[103] They are classified into four main tiers: Common Skills, Extra Skills with enhanced output, Unique Skills shaped by the individual's desires and emotions, and Ultimate Skills, which represent the apex of power.[104][105] Ultimate Skills grant complete control over specific universal laws and cannot be negated or damaged by lower-tier abilities, establishing the absolute rule that only an Ultimate Skill can counter another Ultimate Skill.[106] Ultimate Skills are broadly divided into Virtue-type Angelic skills, derived from fragments of Veldanava's authority, and Sin-type Demonic skills, which arise from extreme mortal desires and counter angelic authorities.[103][107]

Magic is the deliberate manipulation of atmospheric magicules to rewrite physical reality based on mental visualization.[108][109] It encompasses four major schools: Elemental Magic, which alters physical laws; Spirit Magic, which produces natural phenomena by contracting with elementals; Holy Magic, which directs spiritrons through religious devotion via the Secret of Faith and Grace; and Summoning Magic, which calls spiritual beings or beasts into the material plane.[110][111][112][113] Elemental Magic reaches its peak in Nuclear Strike Magic, capable of devastating armies and harming Ultimate Skill users.[114][115] Holy Magic is unique because it relies on faith in a recognized deity rather than personal magicule capacity, allowing even frail clerics to invoke devastating spells like Disintegration, which annihilates targets at the subatomic spiritron level.[112][114][116] Arts denote physical martial techniques and weapon arts developed through rigorous training, often combined with magicules to form Magic Aura.[102][117]

Energy, particles, and existence values

The fundamental building blocks of matter and spirit in the cosmos consist of magicules, spiritrons, and information particles.[118][119][120] Magicules serve as the ambient energy powering monster biology and spellcraft; in dense concentrations, they form magicule deposits from which monsters spontaneously generate or mineral veins convert into magisteel.[118][121] Spiritrons are subatomic particles composing magicules, exhibiting chaotic waveforms that allow them to bypass physical barriers and penetrate conventional absolute defense fields.[119] Information particles represent the smallest irreducible unit of existence, possessing near-zero mass and traversing space and time instantaneously.[120] Soul structures consist of a core containing the entity's ego wrapped in information particles, enveloped in an energy crystal that forms the soul itself, which in turn projects the astral and spiritual bodies.[120][122]

To quantify combat strength, the Jura Tempest Federation's research facilities utilize Existence Points, or EP.[123] An entity's EP represents the numerical sum of its internal magicule capacity and physical body density, with weapon and armor energy added as an auxiliary value.[123] An EP below 1,000 corresponds to E-rank; 1,000 to 9,999 spans D to A-minus rank; 10,000 to 99,999 represents Hazard class (A rank); and values exceeding 100,000 indicate Calamity class (Special A rank).[123] Demon Lord Seeds typically register over 200,000 EP, traditional demon lords exceed 400,000 EP, and awakened True Demon Lords surpass 800,000 EP.[123] Entities crossing 1,000,000 EP are considered super-awakened, while individuals exceeding 2,000,000 EP acquire divine status and spiritual divinity.[123] True Dragons and equivalent transcendent entities have values ranging from 40 million to over 80 million EP, while the insectar monarch Zellanus attained creator-tier status at over 114 million EP.[123]

Species and societies

Inhabiting the mortal realm are diverse classifications of living and spiritual beings. Non-human races are categorized based on human disposition: friendly, interfertile species like dwarves and elves are termed demi-humans, whereas hostile non-beast species are classified as monsters.[124] Highly intelligent, reproductive monsters are called demonic beings, and the strongest among them are designated majin.[124] Monsters possess the ability to communicate across linguistic barriers using Thought Communication. Upper-echelon monsters can evolve into Demon Lord Seeds, and upon absorbing ten thousand human souls during a Harvest Festival, they awaken into True Demon Lords, undergoing a profound biological transformation into spiritual lifeforms.[125][126] Conversely, humans who undergo intensive ascetic training evolve into enlightened beings and subsequently saints, attaining a spiritual status equivalent to True Demon Lords.[127][128]

Demons are spiritual lifeforms native to the underworld who organize themselves into a strict feudal hierarchy based on chronological age and aristocratic peerage.[123] The seven original progenitors, known as the Seven Primordials, were spawned from the Great Holy Spirit of Darkness as the shadows of the Primordial Angels: Rouge (Red), Noir (Black), Blanc (White), Jaune (Yellow), Violet (Purple), Bleu (Blue), and Vert (Green).[129] Demons are categorized by age into Modern, Recent, Middle, Ancient, and Prehistoric species; those surviving over two millennia break ambient magicule caps and enter the ruling classes. In ascending order, demonic ranks encompass lesser demons, greater demons, archdemons, demon dukes, and devil lords. Other notable extra-dimensional species include the Insectars, bug-like semi-spiritual organisms originating from the rift between material and spiritual realms whose chitinous exoskeletons rival mythical-grade armaments; the Phantoms, former angels corrupted by toxic magicules; and Cryptids, aggressive beasts spawned from the overflow energy of the destructive dragon Ivarage.[130][131]

Naming, metallurgy, and infrastructure

Naming is a metaphysical ritual wherein a higher-tier entity confers a name upon a nameless monster, expending a portion of their permanent magicules to facilitate the recipient's evolutionary breakthrough.[65][132] Because magicules represent life force, excessive naming can cause the namer's death or permanent depletion of power.[65] If an entity has received a name from a master, its soul properties alter, preventing it from awakening as a True Demon Lord through its own harvested souls; instead, it requires a bestowal of one hundred thousand souls from its sovereign to trigger an artificial awakening.[133]

. The nation develops the Magitrain, a railway network utilizing magisteel tracks and spirit-magical elemental cores that convert magicules into thermal energy and turbine electricity, reaching operational speeds of fifty kilometers per hour.[134][135] Metals in the series include magisteel, taken from iron ore that has mutated after absorbing large amounts of magicules over many years in places dense with them; Orichalcum, made by adding gold to magisteel; Adamantite, a living magisteel of legendary grade; Dragotite, magisteel altered by Veldora's aura; and the mythical-grade Hihi'irokane.[121][136][137][138][139] Pharmaceutical developments spearheaded by Gabil and Vester yield complete potions with 99 percent extraction rates from hipokute grass, capable of regenerating severed physical limbs instantly.[140][141] Rimuru also manufactures pseudo-souls, which allow users to project consciousness into temporary avatars for dungeon exploration or to resurrect fallen enemy soldiers without their original skills.[142][143]

Geography and nations

The geopolitical landscape of the Base World is divided across three major continental landmasses: the Central Continent, the Ice Continent, and the southern continent of El Dorado, surrounded by monster-infested oceans that impede naval transit. The Central Continent contains the Great Forest of Jura at its geographical center, acting as a historical buffer zone separating the Western Nations from the Eastern Empire.[144] To the north lie the mountainous territory of Dwargon and the extreme frozen wastes of the Ice Continent, while the southern expanse hosts the territories of various demon lords.[144]

Jura Tempest Federation

The Jura Tempest Federation, commonly known as Tempest, is a sovereign monster commonwealth established in the Great Forest of Jura under Rimuru's chancellorship.[145][146] Governed from the Central City of Rimuru, the settlement features paved road grids, underground sewage systems, residential sectors, industrial workshops, and diplomatic guest complexes.[147] Though constitutionally an absolute monarchy centered on Rimuru, administrative duties are divided through three branches of government overseen by prime minister Rigurd and judicial officials.[145] Tempest's standing armed forces comprise 52,000 personnel divided into specialized corps, equipped with uniform magisteel armaments and supported by the intelligence operations of Souei's Shadow Squad.[148]

Beneath the city's grand colosseum lies the hundred-floor underground Labyrinth created by Demon Lord Ramiris.[70] Functioning publicly as a commercial attraction where adventurers test their skills using revival bracelets that ensure resurrection upon death, the labyrinth doubles as Tempest's ultimate defensive bunker; during crises, the entire surface capital can be inverted and sheltered on the 101st floor.[70] Floors ten through fifty contain environmental challenges and designated floor bosses, floors 51 through 90 are guarded by the Dungeon Ten Elites, floor 95 houses an subterranean resort town and research center, and floor 100 serves as the lair of the final boss, Veldora Tempest.[149][150] The labyrinth's high ambient magicule density also facilitates the cultivation of hipokute grass and industrial magisteel production.[65]

Western Nations and religious powers

The Western Nations comprise a collective of human feudal states bound by the Council of the West, an international parliament based in the Kingdom of Ingrasia.[144][151][152] Ingrasia represents the cultural and economic nexus of human civilization, hosting both the council and the headquarters of the Freedom Association, a global mutual-aid federation for adventurers reorganized by Grandmaster Yuuki Kagurazaka.[151][153][154] The Kingdom of Blumund is a small neighboring state that thrives through extensive intelligence gathering, being the first human kingdom to establish formal diplomatic relations with Tempest.[155][156] The Kingdom of Falmuth was a powerful trading monarchy of forty million inhabitants that controlled continental trade routes before its military invasion of Tempest resulted in complete catastrophe; following its defeat, the state was dissolved and reorganized as the agricultural Kingdom of Falmenas under King Youm.[157][158][159] Other regional human kingdoms include the Siltrozzo Kingdom, ruled covertly by the Rosso clan and the Five Elders, and the desert kingdom of Coleus.[160][161]

The Holy Empire of Lubelius is a theocratic state of twenty million people situated in the western continent, serving as the headquarters of the Western Holy Church and the religion of Luminism.[162][163] The church's doctrine held that monsters must not be allowed to exist, until it was abolished in volume 7 of the light novel, when Lubelius recognized Tempest as a nation.[164][165] In reality, the nation is a managed symbiosis established fifteen centuries earlier by the vampire Demon Lord Luminous Valentine.[165][166] Humans are shielded from monster raids and guaranteed comfortable living standards in exchange for periodic blood donations, while the threat of an external demon lord is staged by vampire stand-ins like Roy Valentine.[165][166] Lubelius maintains two premier military bodies: the Crusaders, consisting of over one hundred A-rank holy knights led by Hinata Sakaguchi, and the Pope's Personal Guard, which includes the Three Martial Sages.[167][168] Beneath the surface cathedral lies the Night Garden, a subterranean vampire metropolis dedicated to advanced physical sciences.[169]

Other continental powers

The Armed Nation of Dwargon is a millennium-old subterranean kingdom carved within the Canaat Mountains, inhabited by fifty million dwarves and fifty million allied residents.[170][171] Ruled by King Gazel Dwargo, it maintains armed neutrality, a universal currency system, and advanced spirit-engineering workshops.[172][173] The Sorcerous Dynasty of Sarion is an ancient empire with a population of 100 million ruled by the high-elven empress Elmesia El Ru Sarion, boasting thirteen noble dynasties and sophisticated magic-scientific technology.[174][175][176] To the south of Jura lie the domains assimilated under Milim Nava: the Forgotten Dragon City, whose dragonewt residents worship Milim; the Beast Kingdom of Eurazania, previously governed by Carrion; and the aerial cliff-city of the Winged Nation of Fulbrozia, previously ruled by Frey.[177][178][179] The puppet nation of Jistav, formerly controlled by Kazaream and Clayman, consists of dark elven populations governed from the ancient ruins of Amrita.[180][181]

Dominating the northeastern continent is the Nasca Namrium Ulmeria United Eastern Empire, an autocratic state of eight hundred million subjects ruled for over two millennia by Emperor Rudra Nam Ul Nasca.[182][183][184] The empire enforces absolute meritocracy and has phased out classical knights in favor of modern mechanized armies developed with the aid of summoned otherworlders.[185][186] Its one-million-man military consists of the Armored Corps, the Beast Corps, and the Mixed Corps, spearheaded by the elite hundred-man Imperial Guardians.[187] Other independent territories include the Ice Continent, where Guy Crimson resides in the frozen White Ice Palace alongside the True Dragon Velzard; the southern island continent of El Dorado, ruled by Demon Lord Leon Cromwell; and the desolate wastelands of Damargania, governed by the giant Demon Lord Dagruel.[188][189][190]

Characters

The narrative features an extensive cast spanning monsters, humans, spirits, demons, and primordial deities distributed across multiple nations and factions.

Rimuru Tempest and alter egos

Rimuru Tempest, voiced by Miho Okazaki in Japanese and Brittney Karbowski in English, is the central protagonist who was formerly Satoru Mikami, voiced by Takuma Terashima and Jason Liebrecht.[191][192][193][194] Initially a slime possessing intrinsic cellular regeneration, dissolving acids, and physical resistances, Rimuru's absorption of various entities expands his power exponentially.[3][195] After consuming Shizue Izawa, he gains an androgynous human appearance.[2][196] Through his Harvest Festival evolution into an awakened True Demon Lord, his race transitions to Demon Slime, multiplying his magicule capacity more than tenfold.[197] In volume 15, upon consuming and analyzing Veldora, Rimuru evolves into an Ultimate Slime, becoming recognized as a sub-species of the True Dragons and the fifth divine dragon of the world.[198]

Rimuru's mental faculties are supported by his evolving cognitive skill.[46] Originating as the unique skill Great Sage, voiced by Megumi Toyoguchi, it hijacked a portion of the Voice of the World to establish independent conversational awareness, providing Rimuru with Thought Acceleration, Analytical Appraisal, Parallel Operation, Chant Annulment, and All of Creation.[4][46] Upon Rimuru's demon lord awakening, it evolves into the angelic ultimate skill Wisdom King Raphael, multiplying Thought Acceleration to one million times and introducing Ability Modification.[46][199] In volume 15, Rimuru names the consciousness Ciel, elevating it to a divine core (Manas) that exercises absolute control over Rimuru's skill synthesis and evolution.[200][201] Ciel synthesizes Rimuru's ultimate skills into Void God Azathoth, which commands Nihility Collapse, Imaginary Space, and Soul Consumption, and Harvest King Shub-Niggurath, which handles skill creation, duplication, and bestowal.[200][202]

Twelve Guardian Lords

The Twelve Guardian Lords are Tempest's highest-ranking military executives, each granted one hundred thousand souls by Rimuru in volume 14 to undergo evolution into True Demon Lords.[89] Benimaru, voiced by Makoto Furukawa, is an evolved ogre prince who commands Tempest's military as Samurai General; upon awakening as Flare Lord, he becomes a divine flame spirit possessing the ultimate skill Amaterasu.[203][204] Shion, voiced by Mao Ichimichi, serves as Rimuru's chief bodyguard and leader of the resurrected Yomigaeri unit; armed with the greatsword Gorikimaru and the reality-altering unique skill Cook, she later unlocks the ultimate skill Susanoo.[205][206] Souei, voiced by Takuya Eguchi, leads the Shadow Squad espionage network, wielding twin ninja blades and sticky steel threads before obtaining the ultimate gift Tsukuyomi.[207][208]

Geld, voiced by Taro Yamaguchi, is the high orc commander of the engineering and defense corps who evolves into Barrier Lord, obtaining the ultimate gift Beelzebub.[209][210] Gabil, voiced by Jun Fukushima, leads the aerial dragonewt division and oversees hipokute grass laboratories, attaining the title Dragon Lord and the ultimate gift Mood Maker.[210][211] Ranga, voiced by Chikahiro Kobayashi, is the Tempest Star Wolf dwelling within Rimuru's shadow who awakens as Star Lord, obtaining the weather-controlling ultimate skill Hastur.[8][212][213] Diablo, voiced by Takahiro Sakurai, is the Primordial demon Noir who serves as Rimuru's second secretary and leader of the Black Numbers; upon evolving into Demon Lord, he commands the ultimate skill Azazel.[214][215][216]

The remaining five Guardian Lords comprise three Primordial demons and two dungeon executives.[217] Testarossa (Blanc), voiced by Yumi Uchiyama, serves as western diplomatic envoy and commands the ultimate skill Belial as Killer Lord.[217][218][219] Ultima (Violet), voiced by Miyu Tomita, acts as Tempest's chief prosecutor and commands Samael as Pain Lord.[217][220] Carrera (Jaune), voiced by Ikumi Hasegawa, presides over the supreme court and wields Abaddon and Kondo's divine golden gun as Menace Lord.[217][221] Zegion, an insectar beetle trained in martial arts by Veldora, becomes Mist Lord, commanding the ultimate skill Mephisto.[222][223][224] Kumara, an evolved nine-tailed spirit fox, serves as Chimera Lord, commanding eight tail beasts and the ultimate gift Bahamut.[223][225][226] Adalman, an undead former holy cleric, oversees the lower dungeon floors as Gehenna Lord alongside his knight Albert and death dragon Wenti, commanding the ultimate gift Necronomicon.[227][228][229]

Other Tempest citizens and allies

Shuna, voiced by Sayaka Senbongi, is Benimaru's sister and an ogre princess who oversees textile manufacturing, cuisine research, and diplomatic domestic duties; despite her non-combat role, she masters holy magic and awakens the ultimate skill Yaoyorozu.[230] Hakuro, voiced by Hochu Otsuka, is an aged ogre swordsman and grandson of the otherworlder Araki Byakuya; he instructs Rimuru, the kijin, and Gazel Dwargo in the Oboro school of swordsmanship.[172][231][232] Kurobe, voiced by Junichi Yanagita, is an ogre blacksmith whose weapons reach mythical grades.[233][234] Rigurd, voiced by Kanehira Yamamoto, serves as goblin king and head of civil domestic administration, while Gobta, voiced by Asuna Tomari, is an unorthodox hobgoblin captain capable of merging with Ranga in combat.[6][235][236]

Human and foreign allies residing in Tempest include Gard Mjolmile, voiced by Yutaka Aoyama, a wealthy merchant from Blumund who directs the federation's financial and public relations departments and co-founds the Three Wise Drunks secret society.[237][238][239] Soka, Gabil's sister, commands Souei's operational spy squad.[240][241] Momiji, Hakuro's daughter with the tengu elder Kaede, marries Benimaru as his first wife, while Albis of Eurazania becomes his second wife.[242][243][244] Ingrasia's summoned students, Kenya, Ryota, Gale, and Alice, receive spirit familiars to stabilize their lifespans and undergo training in Tempest.[32][245][246] Chloe Aubert, an otherworlder child, is revealed to be the vessel for the time-traveling Hero Chronoa, possessing the ultimate skills Yog-Sothoth and Sariel.[247][248][249] Masayuki Honjo is an otherworlder high schooler whose skill Chosen One causes surrounding individuals to overestimate his prowess; he is later identified as the soul reincarnation of Emperor Rudra and crowned ruler of the Eastern Empire.[75][95][250]

Demon lords and antagonists

The Eight Star Demon Lords (Octagram) consist of the supreme powers of the material plane.[50][251] Guy Crimson, voiced by Akira Ishida, is the Primordial demon Rouge and the oldest demon lord, serving as the world's appointed mediator; he wields the ultimate skill Lucifer.[252][253][254][255] Milim Nava, voiced by Rina Hidaka, is the ancient dragonoid daughter of Veldanava and Lucia, wielding the ultimate skill Wrathful King Satanael.[256][257][258] Ramiris, voiced by Anzu Haruno, is a fallen spirit queen who creates and manages labyrinthine dimensions.[259][260][261] Dagruel, voiced by Rikiya Koyama, is an ancient giant deity whose body possesses natural immunity to magicules.[262] Luminous Valentine, voiced by Lynn, is the vampire queen of Lubelius who possesses the ultimate skill Asmodeus.[263][264] Dino, voiced by Yusuke Kobayashi, is a fallen angel who was once a seraph of the Primordial Angels; he holds the angel-type ultimate skill Astarte and evolves his unique skill Sloth into the demon-type ultimate skill Belphegor.[262][265][266][267] Leon Cromwell, voiced by Jun Fukuyama, is a former human hero who became a demon lord to search for Chloe Aubert, wielding the ultimate skill Metatron.[268][269][270]

The Moderate Harlequin Alliance is a troupe of Deathman clowns created by the undead demon lord Kazaream.[271][272][273] Following Kazaream's defeat by Leon two centuries prior, the group aligned with Yuuki Kagurazaka.[274] Its members include vice-president Laplace, voiced by Kazuya Nakai, who was formerly the human hero Sarion Grimwald; Footman, voiced by Shinji Kawada; and Tear, voiced by Kaede Hondo.[271][275][276][277] Clayman, voiced by Takehito Koyasu, was an alliance member and former demon lord whose manipulative actions against Tempest led to his consumption by Rimuru at Walpurgis; he was later revealed to have been manipulated by imperial mind control.[54][278][279]

Major external antagonists include the leadership of the Eastern Empire and the otherworldly Phantoms.[130][183] Emperor Rudra Nam Ul Nasca, once Veldanava's student and the first hero, passed his self and memories on to his own children, but his soul wore down with each reincarnation; by the war with Tempest, Rudra had already been replaced by Michael, his ultimate skill Justice King.[90][280][281] Michael commands absolute angelic dominance and summons angelic legions via Armageddon.[90][282] Feldway changed into a Phantom while managing the other world; after Veldanava vanished and did not return for centuries, he became obsessed with the idea that Veldanava had abandoned him, grew to hate humanity and became king of the demonkind who oppose it, fixed only on bringing Veldanava back.[93] He formed an equal partnership with the skill Justice King and gave it the name Michael, and Michael shares his aim of Veldanava's full revival.[283][284] Other major adversaries include Tatsuya Kondo, director of the Imperial Information Bureau who wields Sandalphon, and the ancient fire sorcerer Jahil.[285][286][287]

True Dragons

The True Dragons are the highest order of spiritual lifeforms in the cosmos, representing immortal manifestations of natural forces.[288][289][290] Unlike common dragons, True Dragons possess complete spiritual immortality; if their physical form is destroyed, they regenerate at a random location with their core memories intact, though their personalities may undergo shifts.[291] Veldanava, the Star King Dragon, is the first True Dragon and the creator of the world; finding a world that held only his own will boring, he gave up his omniscience and omnipotence and created many other worlds and races.[96][97][288][289][292] He married Lucia, the sister of his student, and fathered Milim, which weakened him almost to the level of a human; soon after her birth, he and his wife were killed in a terrorist attack by an enemy nation.[289][293] Velzard, the White Ice Dragon who lives in Guy Crimson's castle, holds the angel-type ultimate skill Gabriel, and her absolute stop, Eternal World, gives her a defense that none of Veldora's abilities can get through.[252][270][294][295] Velgrynd, the Scorch Dragon aligned with the Eastern Empire, commands kinetic acceleration through the ultimate skill Raguel.[296][297][298] Veldora Tempest, the Storm Dragon, commands wind, water, and spatial elements, gaining absolute immortality through his link with Rimuru's soul and wielding the ultimate skill Faust, later evolved into Nyarlathotep.[299][300][301][302]

Differences between versions

The light novel, manga, and anime adaptations depart significantly from the original Shōsetsuka ni Narō web novel, which the author Fuse designated as an overarching plot draft.[303] In the web novel, the killers of Shion and the Tempest townspeople were Western Holy Church crusaders, whereas the light novel and subsequent adaptations attribute the massacre to three summoned otherworlders serving the Kingdom of Falmuth: Shogo Taguchi, Kyoya Tachibana, and Kirara Mizutani, who do not exist in the web version.[304][305] Shizue's personality is androgynous in the novels but presented with distinct femininity in the manga and anime, while the manga includes an exclusive flashback detailing her childhood in Japan.

The characterization of Yuuki Kagurazaka is radically altered. In the web novel, Yuuki is a purely destructive antagonist seeking the annihilation of all reality using thought-controlling brain parasites, whereas the published light novels portray him as a complex, rational anti-hero seeking world conquest to reform social inequality, occasionally cooperating with Rimuru.[128] The revelation of Yuuki's secret identity also differs: in the light novel, Rimuru deduces his involvement during the Opening Festival, whereas the manga and anime reveal his leadership of the Moderate Harlequin Alliance much earlier when Laplace reports to Kagali.[246] The transfer of Shizue's five students is handled differently as well; rather than conducting covert guild investigations as in the web novel, Rimuru simply invites the children to Tempest's festival and transfers their academic enrollment directly.[246][306][307]

The published light novels introduce entirely new factions, systems, and cosmic hierarchies.[129][284][308] The Seven Primordial demons with color lineages (Rouge, Noir, Blanc, Jaune, Violet, Bleu, Vert) were created for the print version.[129][309] The Rosso family, the Five Elders, and the revelation of Granbell Rosso as the corrupt leader of the Seven Celestial Sages are entirely absent from the web version, where the sages remained loyal to Luminous.[310] The cosmic threat of the otherworldly Phantoms, Insectars, Cryptids, and the Primordial Angels (Feldway, Zalario, Cornu, Obera) was added in the light novel.[284][308] In the web novel, Emperor Rudra's soul wears down with each reincarnation until he cares only about defeating Guy, and he dies after Yuuki seizes Justice King from him. In the light novel, Rudra has already been replaced by his skill Michael by the time of the war with Tempest.[90][281] Finally, Masayuki's status as Rudra's soul reincarnation is only vaguely implied at the web novel's conclusion, whereas the light novel explicitly confirms it when Velgrynd retrieves Rudra's scattered soul fragments across dimensions.[311]

Development and publication

Fuse originally conceived the narrative as an amateur writing exercise, intending to submit it to the Dengeki Novel Prize before choosing to serialize it on the user-generated site Shōsetsuka ni Narō between February 20, 2013, and January 1, 2016.[312][313][314] The author acknowledged being heavily influenced by Kugane Maruyama's Overlord, which was also popular on the platform.[315][316] Fuse developed the protagonist's slime biology not from the mascot enemies of Dragon Quest, but from the dangerous, acidic ooze monsters featured in tabletop role-playing games such as Sword World RPG, Wizardry, and GURPS, which he had played during his student days.[316][317][318] Names for several demon characters, such as Diablo, Testarossa, and Carrera, were derived from luxury sports cars.[125][216][319]

Micro Magazine approached Fuse in November 2013 during the Narokon web competition.[312] The publisher issued the first light novel under its GC Novels imprint on May 30, 2014, with character designs and illustrations by Mitz Vah.[320][321] Editorial feedback led to extensive rewrites that steadily diverged from the web serialization.[303][316] The mainline light novel completed its central story with its twenty-third volume on November 29, 2025.[322][323] Alongside the standard releases, Micro Magazine published two official databooks, Volume 8.5 in August 2016 and Volume 13.5 in January 2019, as well as the tenth-anniversary special volume TenSura X in November 2023. A side-story light novel, How to Spend a Certain Holiday, was released on November 29, 2025.[324] A children's book adaptation illustrated by Moryo has been published under Micro Magazine's Kanade Bunko imprint since September 2021, reaching forty volumes by late 2025. In North America, Yen Press licensed the light novel series for English publication in April 2017.[325]

Manga adaptations

A manga adaptation illustrated by Taiki Kawakami commenced serialization in Kodansha's Monthly Shōnen Sirius on March 26, 2015.[326] Kodansha collected the chapters into tankōbon volumes under its Sirius KC imprint, reaching 32 compiled volumes by June 2026.[327] The English version of the main manga is licensed by Kodansha USA, while localized editions are published by Kurokawa in France, Star Comics in Italy, Norma Editorial and Panini in Spanish-speaking regions, and Tong Li Publishing in Taiwan.[328][329][330][331][332]

The franchise has generated numerous manga spin-offs expanding upon daily life and secondary characters. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: The Ways of the Monster Nation, illustrated by Sho Okagiri, was serialized on Micro Magazine's Comic Ride platform from July 28, 2016, to January 30, 2021, spanning eight volumes before being discontinued due to the illustrator's health issues.[333][334][335][336] The series follows the rabbit-folk girl Framea as she compiles a travel guidebook of Tempest using her unique skill Connoisseur.[337][338] The Slime Diaries: That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, a four-panel spin-off drawn by Shiba, began serialization in Monthly Shōnen Sirius in April 2018 and reached seven volumes by January 2024.[339][340] That Time I Got Reincarnated (Again!) as a Workaholic Slime, drawn by Shizuku Akechi, was serialized on Suiyōbi no Sirius between September 2018 and January 2020, depicting Rimuru as a corporate office worker in a contemporary Japanese firm across two volumes.[341][342]

Additional spin-offs include Tenchura! That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, a four-panel parody by Chacha serialized from February 2019 to May 2023 across seven volumes, wherein Rimuru's human transformation leaves him in the body of a three-year-old child.[343][344] That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: Trinity in Tempest, illustrated by Tae Tono, began in March 2019 on Suiyōbi no Sirius, focusing on female monster scouts from Eurazania, the Dragon City, and Fulbrozia, reaching fourteen volumes by August 2026.[345][346] That Time I Got Reincarnated as Kosaku Shima, a crossover collaboration between Fuse, Taiki Kawakami, and Kenshi Hirokane, was published in Evening in 2019 and compiled into one volume.[347][348] That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: Clayman Revenge, illustrated by Wataru Kajika, began in April 2022, following Clayman after he loops seventy years into the past following his death.[349][350] Gourmet Legend: Peko and Rimuru's Cooking Notebook, illustrated by Chika Nakatani, began in April 2023, while an adaptation of How to Spend a Certain Holiday, illustrated by Yuzo Takada, ran from July 2023 to May 2025 across four volumes.[351][352][353]
