Premise and Worldbuilding

The series is set in Li, a vast continental empire whose ruling dynasty bears the surname Hua. The empire is bounded by rugged mountain ranges to the north, the sea to the east, and expansive deserts punctuated by oases to the west. Continental administration is divided into major administrative provinces. Huayang Province forms the empire's central territory where the imperial capital is located, having been relocated to its present site roughly fifty years prior to the events of the story. Zibei Province, situated to the north of Huayang, is governed by the Shi Clan; it is rich in timber, hot springs, and medicinal bathing resorts, and oral tradition claims that the founding ancestors of the imperial lineage originated in this mountainous region. Xinan Province lies to the west, governed from its provincial capital of the Western Capital, an oasis metropolis bordering neighboring foreign states that possesses valuable coal reserves. Weinan Province is a southern territory governed by the Mi Clan, characterized by an extensive waterborne canal network.

The international environment surrounding Li consists of tributary kingdoms and regional trading rivals. To the south lies Anan, a former sovereign kingdom that became a tributary state of Li over a century ago. To the west, across desert routes, sits Shaoh, a strategic trading hub bridging northern and western commercial networks. Shaoh operates under a unique duarchy where a male monarch rules as temporal king while an albino, celibate female shaman acts as the spiritual authority. Further north lies the Northern Alliance, a confederation of sovereign polities that maintains periodic border skirmishes with Li; the Kingdom of Ribito is one of its component member states bordering Xinan Province. Far to the west, beyond the territory of Shaoh, lie the Western Lands, which possess distinct medical and anatomical traditions.

The capital is partitioned into functional districts separated by towering walls. Opposite the imperial palace grounds lies the pleasure district, home to high-end brothels such as the Verdigris House (Rokushōkan). The imperial palace itself is divided into an outer court, where administrative ministries and military garrisons operate, and an inner court, or rear palace. The rear palace houses two thousand serving women and roughly one thousand eunuchs, serving the reigning emperor, his four high-ranking consorts, and numerous secondary consorts. While imperial law formally instituted reforms abolishing slave trading and halting forced castration, remnants of servitude persist: impoverished rural families frequently sell daughters on two-year indentured contracts, and unlicensed traffickers kidnap young women to sell into palace servitude.

Aristocratic authority in Li is anchored by the Named Clans, ancient lineages granted hereditary surnames by founding monarchs in recognition of extraordinary state service. In modern practice, these honorific clan designations correspond to the twelve earthly branches. Surnames in Li follow patrilineal succession, though maternal lineage is maintained under specific regional traditions. The Named Clans assemble once every five years for a formal plenary conference hosted by the Chu Clan. Among these houses, the Ma Clan has served for generations as imperial bodyguards and palace wet nurses. The Ra Clan is known as a house of eccentrics and intellectual prodigies whose members exhibit hyper-specialized perceptual faculties. The Mi Clan serves as a covert imperial intelligence network, operating under the moral mandate of securing the personal happiness of their chosen master. The In Clan formerly governed the Western Capital as a matrilineal lineage before their destruction during the reign of the late emperor. The ancient Windreading tribe, who traditionally conducted nomadic steppe rituals using predatory raptors, were largely slaughtered fifty years prior by rival militant clans.

Plot

The narrative begins with Maomao, an inquisitive seventeen-year-old apothecary raised in the pleasure district by her adoptive father, Han Luomen. While foraging for medicinal herbs in the woodlands outside the capital, she is abducted by bandits and sold into the rear palace as an indentured washing maid. Intending to complete her two-year term without revealing her literacy or medical knowledge, she attempts to remain unnoticed. However, when rumors circulate that the newborn children of the emperor's primary consorts are wasting away from an unknown illness, Maomao deduces that the white cosmetic powders used by the concubines and wet nurses contain poisonous lead. She writes anonymous warning letters wrapped around twigs and leaves them for the mothers. Consort Gyokuyou heeds the message, saving her infant daughter Princess Lingli, whereas Consort Lihua's head maid discards the note, resulting in the death of the infant crown prince and Lihua's severe physical decline.

Jinshi, an influential court administrator operating as an imperial eunuch, identifies Maomao as the author of the warning through her distinctive literacy. Recognizing her value, he arranges for her promotion to the Jade Pavilion as Consort Gyokuyou's personal lady-in-waiting and official poison taster. Maomao subsequently resolves numerous palace incidents. She looks into a ghost scare caused by Consort Fuyou dancing on the palace walls at night, which Maomao judges to be sleepwalking; Fuyou is later granted in marriage to a military officer and leaves the rear palace. Under imperial command, Maomao nurses Consort Lihua back to health by enforcing the removal of poisoned face powders and disciplining abusive attendants. During the winter garden banquet, she detects poison in Consort Gyokuyou's soup dish, realizing that it was originally swapped with food intended for the young Consort Lishu, whose food allergies to mackerel were being weaponized by hostile maids. She unmasks Fengming, the chief lady-in-waiting to Consort Ah-Duo, who had attempted to assassinate Lishu to conceal that she had accidentally poisoned Ah-Duo's infant son sixteen years earlier by feeding him honey. Because Fengming's trading house was tied to the merchants who purchased Maomao from slave traders, Maomao is caught in the collective dismissal of associated palace staff and returned to the pleasure district.

Unable to settle her debt to the Verdigris House madam, Maomao resumes working as an apothecary and maid in the brothel. Jinshi, distressed by her absence, visits the pleasure district and formally purchases her contract. Rather than re-entering the rear palace, she is appointed as Jinshi's personal attendant in the outer court. In this position, she investigates seemingly unrelated palace incidents: a small storehouse explosion triggered by combustible dust, a civil official's severe food poisoning from salt containing pufferfish neurotoxins, and a cryptic metallurgical will left by an imperial blacksmith to his three sons. Maomao discovers that these events were deliberate preparation for an assassination plot. During an imperial ancestral ceremony, she intervenes directly to shield a disguised high dignitary from a falling ceremonial weight. Her investigation identifies the court lady Suirei as the operative behind the plot. When authorities attempt to capture Suirei, she seemingly commits suicide by consuming poison, but Maomao discovers that Suirei used a resurrection compound that induces temporary suspended animation, escaping through a cemetery.

Maomao's biological father, the imperial grand commander Han Lakan, attempts to establish contact with her. To repel his overtures, Maomao challenges him to a game of Shogi using alcohol consumption as a handicap. Lakan intentionally loses the wager, allowing Maomao to direct him to purchase the redemption contract of Fengxian, Maomao's biological mother, who had been secluded in the Verdigris House with advanced tertiary syphilis. Lakan takes Fengxian into his estate as his legal wife until her death the following spring. Meanwhile, Consort Gyokuyou becomes pregnant again, prompting Jinshi to reassign Maomao to the rear palace alongside her adoptive father Luomen, who is reinstated as an imperial physician to manage a breech birth. During this term, Maomao befriends a servant named Shisui, who shares her fascination with entomology and botany. However, Suirei and Shisui abduct Maomao, transporting her to a northern mountain stronghold held by the Shi Clan. Shisui reveals herself as Consort Loulan, daughter of the grand minister Shishou and his vengeful wife Shenmei. Disgusted by her mother's treasonous rebellion, Loulan sabotaged the clan's munitions and coordinated with Jinshi. The rebellion is suppressed; Loulan stages her death, and the innocent children of the clan are secretly spared under suspended-animation drugs and relocated to Ah-Duo's southern estate.

Following the birth of Gyokuyou's son and her formal elevation to Empress, Maomao's public exposure as Lakan's daughter prevents her from serving as an ordinary palace maid. She returns to her shop in the pleasure district before sitting for the imperial court examinations for female civil officials. Passing near the top of the examination list, she is assigned to the imperial medical bureau as a court medical assistant alongside fellow candidates Yao and Yanyan. Under senior physicians, she studies pharmacology and receives specialized training in surgical techniques and human dissection, drawing on texts attributed to the legendary ancient surgeon Huatuo. During a diplomatic visit by an envoy from Shaoh, Maomao untangles a complex political plot involving the attempted poisoning of a visiting priestess, discovering that the religious figure was actually an emasculated male who sought asylum to escape political exploitation in Shaoh. In the course of these events, Jinshi unexpectedly proposes marriage to Maomao, who deflects the offer due to the extreme social disparities and factional dangers surrounding his station.

Predicting an imminent ecological disaster based on locust specimens found in market grain and records left by executed Shi clan physicians, Maomao warns the court of an impending regional famine. Jinshi leads an imperial delegation to the Western Capital in Xinan Province to coordinate famine relief and inspect provincial governance under the Yang Clan. Maomao accompanies the mission as part of the medical retinue, along with Lahan's agriculturalist brother. In the Western Capital, the imperial party encounters political friction with the provincial governor, Yang Gyokuou, who harbors militant ambitions to initiate war with Shaoh under cover of the disaster. Maomao resolves multiple crises, including performing emergency abdominal surgery on an afflicted young girl and surviving an abduction staged by local bandits. As the locust swarm devastates the territory, famine countermeasures organized by Lahan's brother stabilize food supplies. Gyokuou is killed by his subordinate Rikuson, who acted to protect himself and the future of the Western Capital after the war Gyokuou had started without authorization got out of control; with the Emperor's consent, the killing was treated as an accident. After returning from the Western Capital, Jinshi puts a branding iron to his own abdomen, giving himself a mark borne only by criminals, to show that he renounces his claim to the imperial throne.

Characters

The characters in The Apothecary Diaries encompass imperial sovereigns, palace concubines, civil and military bureaucrats, medical practitioners, courtesans, and foreign envoys. Social status dictates interpersonal etiquette, yet individual relationships frequently circumvent court protocols through shared knowledge of medicine, administrative intrigue, and covert factional loyalty.

Protagonists

Maomao (猫猫), voiced by Aoi Yūki in both the audio drama and television anime, and portrayed by Mana Ashida in the live-action drama, is the central protagonist of the series.^[1][2][3][4] She begins the story at age seventeen and ages to twenty-one over the course of the narrative. She stands 153 centimeters tall, possesses a slender, petite frame, and was born on December 31 with type B blood. Raised in the pleasure district by her adoptive father Han Luomen, she practiced medicine and supplied remedies to the brothels of the capital. To protect herself from predatory men in the red-light district, she applied clay and cosmetic pigment to paint artificial freckles across her nose and cheeks to appear plain, a disguise she deliberately maintains after entering palace servitude. Maomao possesses an analytical mind and an insatiable curiosity regarding poisons, medicinal herbs, and pathology. Her extensive self-experimentation with toxic compounds has left her left forearm covered in scars, which she conceals with bandages, while granting her exceptional physiological resistance to many poisons. However, she suffers from a severe buckwheat allergy that causes respiratory failure upon consumption, an affliction she classifies as a constitution-specific poison. She has a high tolerance for alcohol and enjoys recreational drinking. Pragmatic and detached regarding romantic entanglements due to observing commercial sexuality from childhood, she originally views Jinshi with suspicion and distaste, though she gradually grows closer to him after their experiences in the Western Capital.

Jinshi (壬氏), voiced by Takahiro Sakurai in the audio dramas and Takeo Ōtsuka in the anime series with Megumi Han voicing his childhood self, serves as the head eunuch supervising rear palace administration.^[1][5][6] Known for celestial physical beauty described as capable of toppling nations, he effortlessly entrances men and women across the imperial grounds. In public, he claims to be twenty-four years old. In reality, he is nineteen years old at the narrative's start, stands 180 centimeters tall, was born on January 1 with type A blood, and is not a eunuch; he consumes daily libido-suppressing drugs to suppress his masculine functions so he can operate within the women's quarters. His true identity is Hua Ruiyue (華瑞月, Ka Zuigetsu), publicly acknowledged as the Emperor's sickly younger brother, referred to by courtiers as the Prince of the Moon or Night Prince. He adopted his administrative role within the rear palace at the Emperor's behest to test courtier loyalty and identify treasonous plots.^[7][8] Unbeknownst to the general public, he is the Emperor's biological eldest son by Consort Ah-Duo, having been swapped at birth with the Dowager Empress's biological son to ensure his medical survival. Intrigued by Maomao's immunity to his physical charms, Jinshi develops deep affection for her, repeatedly relying on her deductive intellect while attempting to secure her safety.

Imperial Family

The Emperor, Hua Xiaoyang (華曉陽), voiced by Daichi Endō, is the thirty-four-year-old sovereign of Li. He is depicted as a robust man with an imposing beard and an affable, practical demeanor. While Maomao privately considers him a lecherous elder due to his preference for voluptuous women, he is deeply dedicated to governance and judicial mercy, actively reforming harsh penal codes and eradicating institutional corruption left by his predecessors. During his youth as crown prince, Consort Ah-Duo was his sole consort. Rather than banishing displaced concubines to isolated cold palaces, he provides detached estates or arranges honorable departures. Conscious of political factionalism, he relies on Jinshi to assist in managing court affairs and openly favors a marriage between Jinshi and Maomao.

The Former Emperor, voiced by Takeo Ōtsuka, was the father of the reigning monarch, having died approximately five years prior to the story's beginning. Weak-willed and politically inept, he functioned as a puppet under his domineering mother, the Empress Regnant. Because of his mother's excessive protection, he could not relate normally to adult women and was frightened of them, directing his sexual attentions exclusively toward very young, prepubescent consorts. His health collapsed from chronic heavy-metal poisoning caused by lifelong use of mineral-based artistic pigments.

Empress Dowager Anshi (安氏), voiced by Mamiko Noto, is the birth mother of the current Emperor.^[9] Originally entering the rear palace as an attendant to her older half-sister, she was chosen to approach the young, traumatized Former Emperor due to her physical precocity, giving birth to the current sovereign at age ten via an emergency cesarean section performed by Han Luomen. She later bore a second infant, whom Ah-Duo secretly substituted with her own newborn son. Resentful of her merchant birth clan for forcing her into the palace, she maintains strict political detachment, refusing to grant imperial patronage to her relatives.

Princess Lingli (鈴麗), voiced by Atsumi Tanezaki, is the young daughter of the Emperor and Empress Gyokuyou. Afflicted in infancy by severe illness caused by contaminated lead cosmetic powders, she was saved by Maomao's written warning. She is cherished by both the Emperor and Empress Dowager Anshi. During her early service in the Jade Pavilion, Maomao frequently acted as her playmate, introducing her to a stray three-colored cat named Maomao, whom the Emperor granted the ceremonial title of theft inspector.

Inner Palace Consorts

Consort Gyokuyou (玉葉), voiced by Atsumi Tanezaki in the anime and Yōko Hikasa in the audio dramas, is the Emperor's primary favorite.^[10] Originally holding the rank of Precious Consort (Guifei), she resides in the Jade Pavilion. She is nineteen years old at the start of the story, possessing radiant red hair and jade-green eyes inherited from her foreign mother, a dancer from the western borderlands. Wise, cautious, and cheerful, she employs only four trusted personal attendants, treating them with egalitarian affection. Following the birth of her son, she is formally elevated to Empress (Yuye Hou). Recognizing Jinshi's romantic devotion to Maomao, she frequently observes their interactions with amusement.

Consort Lihua (梨花), voiced by Yui Ishikawa, holds the rank of Wise Consort (Xianfei) and resides in the Crystal Pavilion.^[10] Twenty-three years old at the narrative's opening, she is an aristocratic woman possessing great dignity and a voluptuous figure. After her infant son died from lead poisoning and her own health deteriorated under the care of incompetent, jealous attendants, Maomao restored her health through medical intervention and domestic advice. Deeply grateful, Lihua becomes one of Maomao's steadfast protectors, later giving birth to another healthy imperial son.

Consort Lishu (里樹), voiced by Hina Kino, holds the rank of Virtuous Consort (Defei) and resides in the Diamond Pavilion.^[11] Entering the rear palace at age nine as a consort to the Former Emperor, she took religious vows upon his death before being re-entered as a consort to the current monarch at age fourteen. Inexperienced in adult intimacy and targeted by her own malicious maids due to her unique marital history, she suffers from severe food allergies to seafood and honey. After Maomao exposes the life-threatening nature of these allergies and saves her from multiple assassination attempts, Lishu is eventually permitted to leave the rear palace and enter religious retirement, developing a mutual romantic attachment with the warrior Basen.

Consort Ah-Duo (阿多), voiced by Yūko Kaida, formerly held the rank of Pure Consort (Shufei) in the Pomegranate Pavilion.^[11] Thirty-five years old, she grew up alongside the Emperor as his milk-sibling and became his first consort during his youth. Complications during the birth of her son left her unable to bear further children, and her child was secretly swapped with the Empress Dowager's infant. Possessing an authoritative, androgynous appearance and a masculine bearing, she dresses as a man on occasion to act as Jinshi's surrogate. After retiring from the rear palace to a southern detached palace, she shelters the surviving children of the fallen Shi Clan and political refugees.

Consort Loulan (楼蘭), voiced by Asami Seto, replaces Ah-Duo as Pure Consort in the Pomegranate Pavilion. Seventeen years old, she is the daughter of Prime Minister Shishou and Lady Shenmei. In court, she masks her true appearance beneath heavy cosmetics and constantly shifting exotic wardrobes. In secret, she moves freely through the rear palace dressed as a humble servant named Shisui (子翠), befriending Maomao and Xiaolan over their mutual fascination with insects.^[12] She orchestrates the collapse of the Shi Clan's armed insurrection to eradicate her family's corruption, helping her half-sister Suirei and innocent children escape before fleeing overseas under the alias Tamamo.

Secondary concubines include Consort Fuyou, a middle-ranking consort from the southern tributary state of Anan who had not received the Emperor's favor; she caused a ghost scare by dancing on the palace walls at night, which Maomao took for sleepwalking, and was later granted in marriage to a military officer. Consort Jing was a jealous middle-ranking consort whose accidental death in a domestic dispute with a serving woman was concealed by her attendants, who buried her corpse and staged an imposter to maintain her household stipends.

Court and Palace Staff

Gaoshun (高順), voiced by Kenjiro Tsuda in the audio dramas and Katsuyuki Konishi in the anime, is Jinshi's closest officer and loyal personal attendant.^[1] Thirty-six years old, he belongs to the hereditary martial Ma Clan that protects the imperial household. Though presenting himself as a eunuch within the rear palace, he is a fully intact official who consumes male-suppressing medications; he married at age sixteen and has three adult children and three grandchildren. Practical and patient, he frequently intervenes to manage Jinshi's emotional impulses and refers to Maomao affectionately as Little Cat (Xiao Mao), often rewarding her with steamed meat buns.

Hongniang (紅娘), voiced by Megumi Toyoguchi in the anime and Kyosuke Nitta in the audio dramas, is the thirty-year-old chief lady-in-waiting of the Jade Pavilion.^[13][14] Diligent and overburdened, she oversees palace operations with meticulous discipline, occasionally scolding Maomao for disregarding royal decorum while acting with deep compassion toward her subordinates. The primary maid trio of the Jade Pavilion consists of Infa (桜花), Guien (貴園), and Airan (愛藍), voiced respectively by Rie Hikisaka, Takako Tanaka, and Misa Ishii.^[13] When Consort Gyokuyou becomes pregnant with her second child, three sisters from the Western Capital—Haku-u (白羽), Koku-u (黒羽), and Seki-u (赤羽), voiced by Satomi Satō, Hitomi Ueda, and Miku Itō—are recruited to reinforce the pavilion staff.^[15]

Other prominent palace women include Kanan (河南), voiced by Umeka Shōji, the head maid of the Diamond Pavilion who at first mistreated Consort Lishu along with the other maids before changing her ways and becoming one of her few allies.^[13] Shin (杏), voiced by Sayaka Kinoshita, was Consort Lihua's cousin and head attendant; she was jealous of Lihua, ignored Maomao's warning about the poisoned face powder, and tried to prepare an abortifacient to use against her. Fengming (風明), voiced by Noriko Hidaka, served as Consort Ah-Duo's chief attendant from the time Ah-Duo was the crown prince's consort; to hide a wrong she had done Ah-Duo through something obtained from her family, she tried to kill Consort Lishu and was sentenced to death when this was exposed. Shenlyu (深緑), voiced by Masako Katsuki, manages the clinic on the north side of the rear palace; taken by the Former Emperor as a young girl, she could never leave the rear palace, and she later helped Suirei kidnap Maomao and smuggle her out of the palace. Xiaolan (小蘭), voiced by Misaki Kuno, is a cheerful rear palace servant girl who became Maomao's first close friend, frequently trading palace gossip for sweets before completing her term of service.

Medical Bureau

Guen (虞淵), voiced by Mitsuru Ogata in the audio dramas and Mitsuaki Kanuka in the anime, is the sole resident eunuch physician of the rear palace.^[10] Derided by Maomao as the quack doctor, he is an affable, timid official whose wealthy family manufactures high-grade paper for the bureaucracy. Lacking anatomical skill and terrified of corpses, he relies heavily on Maomao and Luomen to resolve clinical complications, preferring to brew tea and prepare confections.

Han Luomen (漢羅門), voiced by Hiroshi Yanaka, is Maomao's adoptive father, medical mentor, and biological grand-uncle. A former eunuch court physician who studied medicine and human anatomy in the Western Lands, he is widely regarded as one of the empire's greatest medical minds. He performed the surgical cesarean birth of the reigning Emperor, but was later subjected to penal excision of his kneecap and banished from the palace when an infant prince died under his supervisory care. Following his reinstatement to manage Empress Gyokuyou's pregnancy, he instructs junior physicians and works to reform palace sanitary standards.

The medical department includes several senior court physicians: Physician Liu, a Western-trained physician and lifelong friend of Luomen who previously saved his life abroad; Physician You, a cordial mixed-race practitioner native to the Western Capital; Physician Li, an earnest mid-ranking doctor who undertook physical training in the west to cope with administrative stress; and Physician Lao, an experienced elder practitioner with deep expertise in infectious diseases. Junior colleagues working alongside Maomao include Yao, an ambitious fifteen-year-old daughter of a merchant house who passed the medical examinations to achieve personal independence from her family; Yanyan, Yao's protective nineteen-year-old personal servant who joined the bureau to support her; and Tianyu, a brilliant apprentice surgeon claiming descent from Huatuo whose expertise in dissection rivals Maomao's own.

Named Clans and Officials

The Ma Clan has guarded the imperial family for generations. Taomei, Gaoshun's formidable wife and Jinshi's former wet nurse, is the clan's de facto head. Their children include Basen (馬閃), voiced by Yoshitsugu Matsuoka in the audio dramas and Tatsumaru Tachibana in the anime, an earnest military officer with great physical strength and a dulled sense of pain who grew up with Jinshi and serves as his guard, and who shares a mutual affection with Lishu; Baryou, a gifted civil official who passed the imperial examination but suffers from severe shyness; and Mamei, their daughter, who is skilled at administrative work and helps Jinshi with official business.^[13] Chue (雀), Baryou's playful wife, is an elite operative of the covert Mi Clan who acts as Jinshi's personal bodyguard and undercover agent, sustaining a severe right-arm injury while defending Maomao during the Western Capital crisis.^[16]

The Ra Clan is led by Han Lakan (漢羅漢), voiced by Takuya Kirimoto, the military strategist holding the rank of Taiwei.^[17] Known as the eccentric strategist, Lakan has prosopagnosia and cannot recognize faces; instead, he sees each person's role as a shogi piece, and he deploys troops in war as if placing shogi pieces. He is Maomao's biological father, though she dislikes him and his displays of affection for her backfire. His adopted son and nephew, Han Lahan (漢羅半), voiced by Chiaki Kobayashi in the audio dramas and Toshiyuki Toyonaga in the anime, is an accountant who perceives the physical world in numerical values, managing clan finances and uncovering bureaucratic embezzlement. Lahan's older biological brother, Han Junjie (漢俊杰), known informally as Lahan's Brother, is a skilled agronomist whose agricultural innovations and grain management successfully blunt the impact of regional locust plagues.

Other civil and military figures include Lihaku (李白), voiced by Kenji Akabane in the anime and Yasuaki Takumi in the audio dramas, a muscular young officer who assists Maomao in exchange for introductions to the courtesan Pairin, whom he resolves to redeem through career advancement.^[1][11] Rikuson (陸孫), voiced by Yūya Hirose in the audio dramas and Kōki Uchiyama in the anime, initially served as Lakan's aide before being transferred to the Western Capital; he possesses an absolute photographic memory for faces and is the secret survivor of the annihilated In Clan.^[18][19] Vice Minister Lu of the Ministry of Rites is a senior operative of the Mi Clan who mentored Chue.

Pleasure District and Verdigris House

The Verdigris House (Rokushōkan) is the elite brothel where Maomao spent her upbringing. It is managed by the Madam (Yarite Baba), voiced by Kimiko Saitō, an elderly businesswoman who was once the capital's preeminent dancer, standing 175 centimeters tall and celebrated in her youth as the Moon Spirit by foreign dignitaries.^[10] She maintains an agreement with Maomao exempting her from sex work in exchange for referring affluent imperial patrons to the brothel's courtesans. The establishment's leading courtesans are the Three Princesses: Pairin (白鈴), voiced by Ami Koshimizu, a sensual dancer who nursed Maomao in infancy and is romantically pursued by Lihaku; Meimei (梅梅), voiced by Megumi Han, a compassionate woman and skilled Shogi player who trained under Fengxian; and Joka (女華), voiced by Hiroki Nanami, an intellectual courtesan who harbors an aversion to men, entertaining patrons solely through music and literature.^[10]

Fengxian (鳳仙), voiced by Hōko Kuwashima, was formerly the most celebrated courtesan of the Verdigris House and is Maomao's biological mother.^[20] Known for her mastery of Xiangqi and Weiqi, she was the only woman whose face Lakan could visually recognize. Following a misunderstanding regarding Lakan's prolonged military deployment, her pregnancy resulted in the loss of her professional value, driving her into mental collapse during which she severed her own and infant Maomao's little fingertips. Ravaged by advanced syphilis, she lived in seclusion until Lakan bought out her contract at Maomao's engineering. Other residents of the district include Ukyo, a senior male employee; Chou-u (formerly Kyou-u), a young boy of the fallen Shi Clan recovering from memory loss; Sazen, a reformed northern rebel turned apprentice pharmacist; and Kokuyou, a physician bearing facial smallpox scars who assists in operating the street clinic.

Production

The author, Hyūganatsu, originally conceived the series as a mystery narrative centered on an adult woman with three children living in a mining settlement who begins investigating crimes following a fatal poisoning.^[21][22] Concluding that an adult mother might face commercial resistance among web-novel audiences, she redesigned the protagonist as an adolescent girl, assigning her the professional role of an apothecary so that advanced medical and pharmacological training would substitute for maternal experience.^[21][22] In constructing the setting, Hyūganatsu synthesized elements spanning one thousand years of Chinese history, drawing cultural and institutional details from the Tang dynasty through the late Ming dynasty and nineteenth century, alongside Japanese narrative sensibilities, clarifying that the setting is technically a fictional empire rather than historical China.^[21] She also noted that several botanical and toxicological cases were adapted from historical news reports and documented real-world poisonings.^[23][24]

Hyūganatsu initially contemplated concluding the light novel series around its eleventh volume.^[25][26] In May 2025, she stated that the storyline would continue beyond that threshold, committing to developing a satisfying conclusion for the overarching narrative.^[25][26]

During production of the anime television adaptation by Toho Animation Studio and OLM, producer Mitsuteru Hishiyama emphasized strict fidelity to the source novels to appeal to a broad demographic.^[27] Director Norihiro Naganuma concurrently oversaw series composition to ensure that complex political intrigues and medical explanations remained accessible to viewers.^[28] The art department challenged conventional anime backgrounds by designing approximately ten distinct color palettes for the evening sky, harmonizing lighting conditions with the changing emotional states of characters and seasonal transitions.^[29] The twenty-four episodes of the first season adopted a structured split narrative: the first cour focuses predominantly on Maomao's isolated perspective within the rear palace, while the second expands into an ensemble drama exploring Jinshi's administrative responsibilities and court politics.^[30] For the second season, Akinori Fudesaka took over directorship, aiming to emphasize subtle visual mannerisms and sound design to make the characters feel genuinely alive.^[31]

Media

The Apothecary Diaries originated as a user-submitted web novel before expanding across print literature, serialized manga, television anime, theatrical film, live-action streaming series, and interactive video games.

Novels and Light Novels

Hyūganatsu began serializing the novel on the user-generated publishing platform Shōsetsuka ni Narō in October 2011. Publisher Shufunotomo acquired the manuscript and released it as a single-volume tankōbon novel under their Ray Books imprint on September 26, 2012, featuring cover art and illustrations by Megumi Matsuda.^[32][33] In 2014, Shufunotomo reformatted the title into a light novel series published under their Hero Bunko imprint, illustrated by Touko Shino.^[34][35] Sixteen volumes have been published in Japan as of May 30, 2025.^[34][36] Special limited editions containing bundled audio drama CDs were released alongside volumes 9, 11, and 12, while volume 16 received a limited edition containing the anime television series season one production screenplay collection.^{[37][38][39][40]}

The light novel series has received international licensing across multiple languages. J-Novel Club announced its digital English-language license in November 2020, and Square Enix began releasing English print editions in May 2024.^{[34][41][42][43]} In North America, J-Novel Club published digital editions from 2021 onward.^[34][44] In France, Éditions Lumen began releasing French translations in August 2022, combining the first two original Japanese volumes into a single initial release.^[45] In Italy, Dokusho Edizioni began releasing Italian translations in March 2022.^[46][47] In Spain and Mexico, Distrito Manga acquired the publication rights in July 2026 for release starting in November 2026.^[48][49] In Russia, XL Media announced its Russian edition in December 2024 and commenced publication in March 2026.^[50][51] In Ukraine, publisher Lantsuta acquired licensing rights for publication in late 2025.^[52]

Manga Adaptations

A manga adaptation written by Itsuki Nanao and illustrated by Nekokurage began serialization in Square Enix's Monthly Big Gangan magazine on May 25, 2017.^[53] Square Enix collects its individual chapters into tankōbon volumes, with the first volume released on September 25, 2017.^[54] Seventeen volumes have been published in Japan as of July 24, 2026.^[55] Square Enix Manga and Books licensed the adaptation for English release in North America, launching volume one in December 2020.^[56] In France, Ki-oon began publishing the series under the title Les Carnets de l'apothicaire in January 2021.^[57] In Italy, Edizioni BD released the manga under its J-Pop imprint starting in July 2021.^[58][59] In Poland, Studio JG commenced Polish publication in May 2021.^[60] In Spain, licensing shifted from ECC Ediciones to Devir Iberia in September 2025, while Panini Comics distributes the series in Mexico and Argentina.^[61][62][63]

An alternative manga adaptation, titled The Apothecary Diaries: Maomao's Notes on the Inner Palace (薬屋のひとりごと～猫猫の後宮謎解き手帳～, Kusuriya no Hitorigoto: Maomao no Kōkyū Nazotoki Techō), written and illustrated by Minoji Kurata, began serialization in Shogakukan's Monthly Sunday Gene-X magazine on August 19, 2017.^[64][65][66] Shogakukan compiles its chapters into tankōbon volumes, issuing the first volume on February 19, 2018.^[67] Twenty-two volumes have been published as of June 18, 2026.^[68] Shogakukan Asia distributes the series in Southeast Asia under the title The Apothecary Diaries: Maomao's Notes from the Inner Palace.^[69] Mana Books publishes the French edition under the title Enquêtes à la cour, beginning in October 2023.^[70] In North America, Viz Media licensed the series for English print release starting in October 2026, while Editorial Ivrea acquired the Spanish license for Spain starting in September 2026.^[71][72][73]

A spin-off manga focusing on the point-of-view of the palace servant Xiaolan, titled The Apothecary Diaries: Xiaolan's Story (薬屋のひとりごと外伝 小蘭回想録, Kusuriya no Hitorigoto Gaiden: Xiaolan Kaisōroku), illustrated by Itsuki Nanao based on an original story by Hyūganatsu, launched on Square Enix's digital Manga Up! service on March 23, 2025.^[74][75] Square Enix released the first compiled volume in print on November 25, 2025.^[76] The series is published simultaneously in English via the Manga Up! Global app, with Square Enix launching print editions in October 2026.^[77][78]

Anime Television Series

An anime television series produced by Toho Animation Studio and OLM was officially announced on February 16, 2023.^[79][80] The first season was directed and written by Norihiro Naganuma, with Akinori Fudesaka serving as assistant director, Yukiko Nakatani designing the characters, and Satoru Kōsaki, Kevin Penkin, and Alisa Okehazama composing the musical score.^[79][80][81] The season ran for twenty-four episodes across two consecutive cours from October 22, 2023, to March 24, 2024, on Nippon TV and its domestic affiliates, with the premiere broadcasting the first three episodes back-to-back.^[82][83][84] The first opening theme is 'Hana ni Natte' by Ryokuoushoku Shakai, and the first ending theme is 'Aikotoba' by Aina the End.^[82][85] For the second cour, the opening theme is 'Ambivalent' by Uru, and the ending theme is 'Ai wa Kusuri' by Wacci.^[86][87] Milan Records and Toho Animation Records released the 77-track digital soundtrack on March 25, 2024.^[88]

A twenty-four episode second season aired from January 10 to July 4, 2025, on Nippon TV's Friday Anime Night programming block.^[89][90][91] Akinori Fudesaka took over as director while Naganuma transitioned to chief director.^[31] The season's first opening theme is 'Hyakkaryōran' by Lilas Ikuta, and the first ending theme is 'Shiawase no Recipe' by Dai Hirai.^[92][93][94] For the second cour, the opening theme is 'Kusushiki' by Mrs. Green Apple, and the ending theme is 'Hitorigoto' by Omoinotake.^[95][96] Crunchyroll streams the series globally outside of Asia, and Netflix streams the series across selected Asian territories.^{[97][98][99][100]}

Following the second season's conclusion, a third season was announced, scheduled to air in split cours, with the first cour premiering on October 2, 2026, and the second cour following in April 2027.^{[101][102][103]} Advance screenings of the third season's initial two episodes are scheduled for September 27, 2026, in selected Japanese cinemas.^[104] The opening theme for the third season is 'Kumo o Nuke Kazashimo e Watashidake' performed by Yorushika.^[102][104]

Anime Film and Live-Action Series

An original anime theatrical feature film produced by Toho Animation Studio, titled The Apothecary Diaries: The Deceased Empress' Treasure (劇場版 薬屋のひとりごと 亡妃の秘宝, Gekijōban Kusuriya no Hitorigoto: Bōhi no Hihō), was announced in October 2025.^{[105][106][107]} Featuring an original storyline written by series author Hyūganatsu and script supervision by Yuko Kakihara, the film takes place predominantly in the southern water metropolis of Weinan Province.^[108] Mariya Ise joins the cast voicing an original character named Mu Qing.^[108] The film is scheduled to premiere in Japanese theaters on December 11, 2026.^[108][109]

On September 3, 2026, Toho and Amazon MGM Studios announced a live-action drama television adaptation.^{[3][110][111]} Directed by Yuki Saito with a screenplay written by Erika Yoshida, the production stars Mana Ashida as Maomao.^[3][110] The series is scheduled to stream worldwide exclusively on Amazon Prime Video in 2028.^[3][112]

Video Games

In July 2025, Japanese gaming platform G123, operated by CTW Inc, announced a browser simulation game titled The Apothecary Diaries Palace Chronicles.^[113][114] Available across smartphones, tablets, and personal computers, players train Maomao and resolve administrative cases within the palace. The title was released on June 15, 2026, as a free-to-play browser game supported by microtransactions.^[115][116]

During a Nintendo Direct presentation on September 9, 2026, publisher Koei Tecmo announced the franchise's first console video game, titled The Apothecary Diaries: The False Imperial Brother.^[117][118] Developed jointly by Gust and Toho Games, the game is scheduled for release in early 2027 on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and Steam via PC.^[117][118] Featuring an original scenario conceived by Hyūganatsu, players control Maomao as she investigates the 'Five Mysteries' and 'Five Curses' in the imperial palace by gathering forensic clues and interrogating court witnesses.^[119][120]

Exhibitions and Public Collaborations

An official animation exhibition showcasing three-dimensional scene recreations, original animation drawings, storyboards, and production design art toured Japanese cities from March 2025 to January 2026, before traveling through Asia starting with Hong Kong in November 2025.^{[105][121][122][123]} A dedicated literature exhibition, 'Novel The Apothecary Diaries Exhibition: Poison, Medicine, Science, and Mystery', opened touring exhibitions in Tokyo, Yokohama, and Osaka starting in December 2025.^[124] From July 1, 2025, to January 4, 2026, Universal Studios Japan operated an interactive attraction where park guests solved forensic mysteries alongside Maomao and Jinshi.^{[125][126][127]} In August 2026, Crunchyroll and Three Ten Merchandising Services launched an immersive event titled The Loop at Westfield Topanga Mall in Canoga Park, California, featuring The Apothecary Diaries alongside other anime properties.^[128][129]

The franchise has participated in institutional campaigns in Japan. In November 2022, a promotional campaign was conducted with Otsuka Pharmaceutical.^[130] In March 2024, Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) launched commemorative stamp rallies marking the release of light novel volume 15.^[131] The series has collaborated with the Japanese Red Cross Society on blood donation drives.^[132][133] In March 2025, the Japan Pharmaceutical Association distributed collaborative posters and branded medical medication handbooks, while Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare collaborated with the anime production to publish informational leaflets promoting electronic prescription adoption.^[134][135] Agricultural cooperative JA Miyazaki distributed local Hyūganatsu citrus fruit in branded packaging, and the Chiba Prefectural Museum of Science hosted a natural medicine exhibition featuring character displays and an academic symposium between the author and pharmaceutical professors.^[136][137]

The Apothecary Diaries has achieved widespread commercial success and critical acclaim across its novel, manga, and animated formats.

Sales and Rankings

According to Oricon sales tracking in Japan, The Apothecary Diaries ranked as the sixth best-selling light novel series of 2019 with 461,024 copies sold, fifth in 2020 with 527,950 copies, third in 2021 with 496,626 copies, and sixth in the first half of 2023 with 163,677 copies.^{[138][139][140][141][142][143][144][145]} Individual volumes 15 and 16 ranked as the best-selling light novel volumes in Japan in 2024 and 2025, respectively, with volume 16 selling over 200,000 units during its charting cycle, while earlier volumes 5, 6, and 1 occupied eighth, ninth, and tenth places in 2024.^[146][147] In the manga market, a volume of Nekokurage's adaptation ranked tenth in sales during 2025 with 566,342 copies sold, and the sixteenth volume ranked fifth in the first half of 2026 with 474,092 copies.^{[148][149][150]}

Cumulative franchise circulation (including the light novels and both manga series) reached 12 million copies by January 2021, 21 million by February 2023, 27 million by November 2023, 31 million by January 2024, 38 million by September 2024, 40 million by February 2025, 45 million by November 2025, and exceeded 57 million copies by August 2026.^{[151][152][153][154][155][156][157][158][159][160][161][162][163][164]}

The anime adaptation achieved significant television viewership and streaming reach. Following the conclusion of its first season, the series consistently appeared on weekly Japanese television animation ratings.^[165] It was the fifth most-streamed title across all video platforms in Japan in 2024, and the second season became the most-viewed anime series of 2025 on domestic streaming platforms such as U-Next, Abema, and DMM TV.^{[166][167][168][169]} On Netflix Japan, the series was ranked the second most-watched show over the four-year span between 2021 and 2025, trailing only Spy x Family.^[170] On MyAnimeList, the second season concluded 2025 as the highest-rated title of the year with an aggregate score of 8.91 out of 10.^[171]

Critical Response

Critical commentary for the novels and manga has highlighted character dynamics, historical texture, and narrative pacing. Reviewing the initial novel for Anime News Network, Rebecca Silverman gave it a B grade, noting that while the narrative pacing was somewhat brisk, the character interactions and progressive narrative development made it an engaging read, though noting that conventional mystery conventions were lightly applied.^[172][173] Silverman awarded the second novel another B grade, praising Maomao as an assertive and unconventional heroine whose involvement in court intrigue enriched the plot.^[174][175] Demelza of Anime UK News commended the series for balancing political worldbuilding with medical deductions without overwhelming readers.^[176] Helen of TheOASG praised the third and fourth novels for intricate plot design, though noting the complexity of court family lines could prove convoluted.^[177] Light novel researcher Naohiko Yamaguchi noted that the detailed descriptions of street life and herbal lore revealed exhaustive authorial research, while shōjo fiction scholar Keiko Saga praised the fourth volume as a culmination connecting all preceding mysteries.^[178][179]

For the manga adaptations, Theron Martin of Anime News Network awarded the first Big Gangan volume a B+ grade, praising Nekokurage's artwork, character expressions, and historical visual details while noting parallels to The Story of Saiunkoku.^[180][181] Silverman assigned the second volume an A- grade, commending the elegant line art and Maomao's representation as a genuinely resilient female protagonist.^[182][183] Assessing the anime series for IGN, Kambole Campbell praised director Naganuma's ability to maintain narrative momentum through episodic forensic puzzles that gradually assemble into a coherent political drama.^[184] Writing for Bunshun Online, commentator CDB praised Aoi Yūki's voice performance as Maomao, describing her vocal delivery as balancing detached cynicism with feline playfulness.^[185]

Accolades

In 2019, Nekokurage's manga adaptation won the Next Manga Award in the print category and placed ninth in AnimeJapan's 'Most Wanted Anime Adaptation' survey.^{[4][186][187][188][189]} It placed fifth on the 'Nationwide Bookstore Employees' Recommended Comics of 2020' list.^{[190][191][192]} In 2024, the light novel and Nekokurage's manga both won Piccoma Awards in their respective categories.^{[193][194][195]} Minoji Kurata's Sunday Gene-X manga was nominated for the 70th Shogakukan Manga Award in 2024, and won Best Continuing Manga Series at the second American Manga Awards hosted by the Japan Society and Anime NYC in 2025.^{[196][197][198][199]} In Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi!, the light novel ranked ninth in the bunkobon category in the 2026 edition, while Maomao placed ninth in the female character category in 2024.^{[200][201][202]}

The anime television adaptation received numerous industry honors. At the 9th Crunchyroll Anime Awards in 2025, the series received thirteen nominations including Anime of the Year, with Aoi Yūki winning Best Voice Artist Performance (Japanese) for Maomao.^[203][204] At the 10th Crunchyroll Anime Awards in 2026, the second season won Best Director for Akinori Fudesaka and Norihiro Naganuma, Best Drama Anime, Best Main Character for Maomao, Best Japanese Voice Artist for Aoi Yūki, and Best Hindi Voice Artist for Abhishek Sharma as Jinshi.^[205] At the Japan Expo Awards in France, the anime won the Daruma for Best Suspense Anime in 2024 and the Daruma for Best Original Soundtrack for its second season in 2026.^{[206][207][208]} At the German AnimaniA Awards, the anime won Best Online TV Series in 2024, Best Anime Song for Uru's 'Ambivalent' in 2025, and Best Online Sequel Series and Best Home Video Release in 2026.^{[209][210][211][212]} It also won the Grand Prix at the 45th and 46th Anime Grand Prix hosted by Animage.^[213][214]
